Chapter 185 Mila Is Happy Now
"Emily, how much longer until we reach the place you mentioned?"
A young girl with deer-like ears, tugging at Emily's clothes, asked in a sweet voice, "It's been four days, and I'm so hungry!"
"Ivy, just one more day, and we'll be in Eldoria. There's plenty of delicious food there, especially hamburgers. You'll love it," Emily said, crouching down to comfort the girl.
"Okay!" Ivy blinked her big eyes and nodded obediently.
Emily let out a sigh of relief, looking at the thirty or so young beastmen around her. She was glad she arrived in time; the thought of them being taken as slaves was unbearable.
As for the elders who had abandoned the tribe, Emily no longer cared. They had disappointed her by forsaking the children.
"Emily, do you really think the nobles will take us in? We're beastmen, after all," Mary, leading two young beastmen, asked with concern.
"Don't be fooled by the humans. Just four days ago, they captured us as slaves," she added.
"It's different. Henry promised that as long as we work for him, we can support ourselves," Emily reassured them.
Over the past four days, the surviving beastmen had asked her this question many times, and Emily always answered earnestly.
"But we have so many children. Will the nobles really support us for nothing? It's hard for us elderly to bear the burden," Mary expressed her worries.
Emily was at a loss for words. It was true; how could the nobles support so many beastmen children?
It was unfair to rely solely on Henry. Wait, what was I thinking? Couldn't I support them?
"Mary, don't worry. I'll take care of everyone. I have a job, and I earn a silver coin as my monthly salary," Emily said with a confident smile.
"Fine! I hope it's true!" Mary's brow furrowed. How could it be possible to earn a silver coin a month? Which noble would be so generous?
It was understandable that Mary was worried. Since leaving the beastman's territory, she had seen too much deceit and hypocrisy. If Mary weren't an elderly beastman, she would have been captured and enslaved long ago.
Mary, sixty-five years old, with white hair and a pair of small goat horns protruding from her head, had been taking care of the orphaned beastmen in the tribe.
"I've tried it. I even worked as a teacher there, teaching the human children," Emily quickly assured her.
"Emily, you're a kind child, but..." Mary's words trailed off. There was nothing more she could say.
They had no other choice. Staying in the tribe meant waiting to starve to death or being discovered by slave traders and taken away as slaves. It wasn't always that the lupine orc would come to their rescue.
Mary just hoped that the noble Emily mentioned wouldn't be too unreasonable. Perhaps being sold into slavery would at least spare them from starving to death.
She didn't know why she had this thought. Perhaps the pressure from the thirty-three beastmen children was too great, causing her to consider that being a slave might be a way to survive.
Emily didn't know what to say. She had been injured by slave traders a few days ago, and Mary still had the same mentality as when she escaped. She completely distrusted the humans. If it weren't for Ellie and the gentle Miss Willow...
Perhaps she still didn't trust the humans. No, at that time, she might be thinking of a way to escape from the castle, and there would be no more story after that.
"Emily, we're almost there, right?" Mary looked around at the children, afraid that someone might get left behind.
"Yes, just one more day," Emily affirmed.
Emily scanned the group of beastmen children. Their pace couldn't be too fast because she had to take care of them, especially finding food for the children, which slowed them down.
But none of the beastmen children complained. They had been walking obediently for the past four days, without saying they were tired or needed a break.
Adversity made one mature, accelerating one's growth. Perhaps this was one of the reasons why the beastmen were stronger than humans.
Of course, all of this wouldn't have been possible without Mila. If it weren't for Mila leading the way, hunting wild beasts, they would have been too hungry to continue.
"Emily, let's talk for a moment," Mary said in a low voice. "When we arrive, I'll take a few children to the city to find out what's going on. If I don't come back, you take the children and stay far away."
This was the only plan Mary had come up with in the past four days. Only she could go and find out the truth. If the noble saw her, a sheep tribe elder, he would definitely be disgusted and ask her to leave, which would mean that Emily had been deceived.
Emily was at a loss. What was this all about? How could she agree? If Henry found out, would he think she didn't trust them?
Before Emily could answer...
Suddenly, there were many sounds of breaking dry branches and straw all around, making Emily, Mary, and the other beastmen nervous.
"It's not the slave traders again, is it?" Mary was on edge. She quickly pushed Emily and anxiously shouted, "Emily, you leave quickly, or those beasts will..."
Emily laughed and waved her hand, "Mila, you're back?"
The people who appeared around were David and the archers, who had caught up with Mila, who was scouting ahead.
"Yeah! Henry sent someone to pick us up." Mila looked a little tired. She had been busy for four days, and she had to guard the campfire at night and drive away the wild beasts.
"I'm really sorry. I didn't help much." Emily quickly took out a few wild fruits from her backpack.
"You don't need to eat this. David brought food." Mila's mouth curled up.
The feeling of being cared for - it's nice. She had a few bags of dried fish that Henry had David bring.
And the carbonated drink - cola, Mila was very happy now.
"Really? That's great!" Emily got excited and grabbed Mary, shouting, "Henry sent someone to pick us up and brought food."
Mary tilted her head. What's going on? Wasn't it the slave traders?
