Chapter 16
Elene shook her head and then she looked at her.
“I am sorry, but I don’t think so. From what I have known and seen from him, he had already moved on from the past. He was heads over heels in love with Cameron who just abandoned him after everything that my cousin had done for her,” she said and then her eyes went chinky and her eyebrows were drawn together as she looked at her.
“Girl, tell me, have you really moved on? Or there is still a part of you hoping that everything will be okay between the two of you?” Elene asked which made her stop. She tried to check her heart and see what she should be feeling but it was as if she couldn’t say any word.
Had she really moved on from what happened to her and Levi three years ago? Or was she accepted the offer working with Levi for a reason that she was the only one knew? Or was it all because of money? She didn’t know all the answers with all the questions popping inside her mind.
Her mind was suddenly in turmoil. There was a mixture of emotions inside her heart which she couldn’t explain.
“Well, I don’t know? Maybe?” She said and then she shrugged her shoulders. She knew that her heart couldn’t lie.
“Well, you will find that out soon. You will know what exactly your heart says for him when you start to work for him,” Elene said. “I hope you are prepared with your heart’s reaction once you start to work for Levi. You should have expected everything that could happen.”
“Well, you are right. And, yes, I already tried to prepare myself for what's going to happen. I felt very sorry for him because of what happened. He had been paralyzed and then abandoned by his loving girlfriend. Just like what I did to him three years ago. It must really hurt. He must be really in pain,” she said, and the guilt couldn’t be hidden in her tone.
“Come on, you have the reason why you did that. You had no choice, and I am telling you now that you choose to do the right things,” Elene said as she tried to comfort her.
Amelia was preparing all her things that she needed while she was staying at Levi’s place. It was a six-month contract, and she was praying that she would be able to survive. She had only one rest day every week.
She needed to stay in because of her duty as a nurse at the same time to Levi aside from being his therapist.
She was grateful that she had studied a few units of nursing when she was in college though there was really nothing that she should be worried about because she could call Sandi from time to time.
She was finally done packing her things when the phone rang. She fished out her mobile phone from her bad which was on the top of her bed. She immediately swiped the answer button when she saw who the caller on the screen was.
“Hello, mom? You called? Is everything okay?” She quickly asked as soon as she answered the call.
“Yes, dear. You don’t have to worry. Everything is fine here. I just called you because I heard from Sandi that you are going to have a project,” her mother said from the other line.
She swallowed a lump in her throat. Suddenly, she felt it dried because her parents had no idea about Levi and their past.
“Ye--- yes, mom,” she tried to be calm, but she was still stammering. She couldn’t deny to herself that she was a bit nervous because of her parent’s reaction if they would find out the truth.
There was a deafening silence for a couple of minutes on the line. She didn’t know what else to say and wished that her phone call with her mother would end.
“Amelia, I am just reminding you about the word project,” her mom said, giving emphasis to her last word. “I hope what happened three years ago wouldn’t happen again,” it was obvious that her mom was reminding her of the past.
“Mom? What are you saying?” She replied in a cheerful voice though deep inside her, her heart was beating so fast.
“I have already graduated, and I am working. And I am not going there for any other reason but only for work. What else do you think is my purpose? At the same time, just so you know, I am going to take care of a paralyze person,” she exclaimed.
“I am just reminding you and I don’t mean anything else. Go take a rest now since you have to work tomorrow,” her mother said.
“Yes, mom. Thank you for checking in on me. Good night and I love you.”
“Good night, dear. I love you too,” her mother responded and then the call ended. She could only hear the sound of the dial tone.
Amelia took a deep breath and then she put down the mobile phone on the top of her bed.
She sat down next to it like a melting candle. Her mind was in turmoil.
What she did three years ago left a scar in her mother’s heart. Looking at the luggage that was on the floor, she was having second thoughts if she would be going to work in Levi’s place with the fear that Elene’s words might become a reality.
What if they fall in love again? What would happen if she would run away again? And, what if his girlfriend would come back to him? Would even Levi fight for their love? Something which she was unable to do three years ago? Instead of talking to him, she chose to leave him and ran away from him.
