Chapter Hundred-and-Twelve

Dagen's POV

“My deepest sympathies, Lord Harlin on the death of your Luna,” if silence had a voice, it raised its voice in the moments that followed. Alpha George's face turned white as a sheet; Lord Harlin’s eyebrows were raised in confusion; the room was so tense that a sword could not cut through the tension.

“What are you talking about? That cannot be true,” it was Lord Harlin who broke the silence as he gazed upon his Alpha in confusion. I was surprised; I had no idea that Luna George was dead and I knew when Elder Davis said it that it was true because he would not joke about such a thing.

“Alpha George? You have not informed your pack of the death of their Luna?” questioned Elder Thaddeus as though surprised that Alpha George would keep such a thing a secret.

“This is news to me. I do not know what you speak of,” returned Alpha George although it was clear to all that he was lying.

“News? When you received the letter informing you of her death, you sent instructions to bury her in the deep end of The Underworld. How is her death news to you?” I had to applaud these old men. While they had distracted Alpha George by searching through his pack, they had been gathering evidence that would give them cause to overthrow his reign.

“I did not give such an instruction; I do not know what you speak of,” insisted Alpha George.

“Lord Harlin, are you aware that your wife is in Peru and is now journeying to The Underworld to bury your Luna?”

Lord Harlin looked at Alpha George who was gently shaking his head; pleading with his eyes that Lord Harlin believed him.

“I do not believe any of this. I know my wife is in Peru with her mother and sisters. There is no way she would travel to The Underworld without my knowledge and I trust Alpha George not to do harm to his wife.”

“Your father? Where is his corpse?” asked Elder Davis.

Confusion masked Harlin's face once more but he answered the question regardless, “in his grave.”

“You should check again; his corpse was buried in the deep sea of The Underworld,” returned Elder Thaddeus.

“That is not possible; I buried him myself, I was there when his body was laid to rest. I made sure…”

“Were you aware that your father consulted the council before his death? He wrote letters to The Council of Elders just before he was poisoned.”

“He never mentioned anything of the sort. I was very close to my father, he would have said something…”

“He could not because he was trying to protect you. This is one of many letters your father wrote to us while he was alive. Do you care to read it aloud for all of us to hear?”

Lord Harlin took the letter with shaky hands; I saw Alpha George swallow hard and the Elder's sharp gazes were unwavering on Lord Harlin.

_“Elders, I have confirmed that we are indeed all under some sort of influence greater than our minds. Something very dark is happening in this pack that I cannot explain. I beg you to look into Alpha George before things take a turn for the worse. I fear for my life also. This may be the last letter I will be able to send you.”_

“Lord Harlin, that is your father's handwriting, yes?”

“It could be forged; anyone can fake this letter. I do not believe it,” returned Lord Harlin but the man sounded as though he was trying to convince himself and not anyone else.

“This is preposterous! I want you out of my palace if you are here only to spew lies about me. Leave my palace now!” shouted Alpha George at the top of his voice.

“Alpha George, I am afraid we will have to take you into custody. You have repeatedly lied to us and you are a danger not only to your pack but your immediate family. Until our investigations are complete, you cannot return here,” Elder Davis said with a calm voice as though they were talking about a peaceful matter.

“THAT IS RIDICULOUS. I HAVE DONE NO WRONG. LORD HARLIN YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE ME. I WOULD NOT DISHONOUR YOUR FATHER'S BODY IN SUCH A WAY.”

Lord Harlin looked baffled; he kept staring at the letter as though he was trying to make sense of it but the evidence presented in front of him was too glaring.

“Did Alpha George kill my father? It cannot be right? It was Regina… She gave him the poison. She was angry at me for rejecting her… she, she, she served my father the poison… she…” The young Lord’s voice was shaky and nervous as he looked intently at the Elder's faces for answers.

“We are yet to determine who did it but Alpha George is the only one who had motive to…” Elder Thaddeus could not complete his sentence because an enraged Alpha George lunged for his throat with his bare hands. Seeing the situation, I called for the guards while pulling out my own sword and separating the two.

In the confusion that ensued Alpha George was nowhere to be found again. I cussed under my breath and dashed out of the room hoping to find him. I turned several corridors and tried to do a thorough search but he was far gone. Besides, this was his turf. He knew this place better than I did.

I returned to the room where the Elders were still seated.

“I lost him,” I said, regrettably.

“It's alright, Alpha Dagen. We know where he is headed,” replied Elder Thaddeus in a cool tone.

“What is going to happen now? What do I tell the people? I I…” said Lord Harlin who was still in shock.

“You will serve as interim Alpha; it is best if the people do not know that their Alpha is now a fugitive.”
