Chapter Two-Hundred-and-Sixty-Two

**3rd Person POV**

When Lowell returned to himself he knew he was doomed. It was either of two things: Nydia had been found and had exposed him to everyone or Harlin had woken up and had reported that he had been present when the shot had been fired. Either way, he would become tangled in this mess. He tried to stand up but everything hurt altogether.

“You’re awake,” it was his wife by his bedside. He wondered what it was she was doing beside him. He scoffed and ignored her but the next thing for him was to groan in pain because he had ripped his bandage by sitting up.

“I'll get a nurse,” she said simply and without sympathy. He watched her leave and figured that perhaps he still had time to escape but to where and in what condition? He wouldn't even make it out without leaving a trail of blood behind.

Nathan had been up and about since Harlin had been in surgery. He had had to send a letter home the moment he had to inform Lady Alison about her nephew. He knew the letter would not be well received but it had to be done. He had sent the letter alongside the flowers and it was today that he received word back.

It was not good news.

Lady Irene had passed away.

Alison's letter was full of worry for her niece. She would have loved to go to Dome to see Harlin for herself but she was forced to remain in the pack to prepare for Lady Irene's funeral. She was worried about how Harlin was going to receive the news that his favourite aunt had passed away. Alison instructed Nathan not to tell Harlin about the death of his aunt when he woke up.

“Watch where you're going, will you?” someone hissed in front of him. Nathan looked up to see the servant girl he'd been trying to be friendly with during the wedding. He wondered what she was doing back here. He had been so occupied that he had not noticed that the palace had received an important guest.

He muttered his sorry and was about to turn away when he heard, “What's your name? huh?”

He stopped in his tracks and looked at her intently. Why was she trying to be friendly now when all she had been to him was rude. He was not certain what her motive was but he was not interested. He had other things to worry about.

“None of your business,” he returned with the same rude energy she had once used to address him.

Rosaline scowled and walked away. The only reason she had attempted to be friendly with him was because Ashton had tasked her with ending Prince Harlin's life forever. All she had wanted to do was get close enough to Nathan and sprinkle some poisonous powder on him. So that whenever he was close to Harlin, the poor prince would become infected and be killed. Now, she would have to find another way.

Meanwhile, Nathan mused the contents of the letter he was holding unaware of the danger that had passed him.

It was not just the doctor that came to check on Lowell. The Elders entered the room and so did Gabriella. It was easy for her to identify the person she had seen the other day. There he was sitting up on the bed. What did not make sense to her however was the fact that he was injured. The only explanation that would make sense was if he had shot himself to avoid blame.

“Are you certain he's the killer?” quipped Elder Thaddeus. Lowell looked at the horrible vampiress in horror. He did not even know who she was. How would she know anything about who had tried to kill Prince Harlin?

“What are you talking about? I did not kill the prince,” cried Lowell in horror.

“How do you know about the Prince? You've been in bed all this time?” quipped Elder Davis.

“I saw him get shot. She shot me too!” being accused of killing the prince was another thing entirely. He wanted to end the prince's life but he was not so stupid that he would get caught this way. He was only in this mess because Nydia had threatened to expose his relationship with Drieden if he did not assist her in her escape from the palace. Things had gotten ugly very quickly and Harlin had strolled into the garden. Nydia had turned the gun on Harlin and he had motioned for her not to pull the trigger. She had smiled wickedly and said, “Irvette betrayed me because of that rat, he's lived way too long.”

The next thing had been the gunshot and then he had been trying to run away and he had been shot too.

He remembered now that someone else had been there with Prince Harlin. It had been this pasty white woman.

“Who shot at you?” inquired Elder Walker.

Lowell was quiet. What could he say? That he did not recognise her? That would be a lie because there was just no werewolf who did not know Nydia. She had been banished from all of the land and her pictures were everywhere so that everyone could know that she was not welcome on werewolf soil.

“Can you not speak?” quipped Elder Thaddeus.

“It was Drieden's mistress,” he finally said.

It was not hard for everyone present to believe this. They all filed out of his room after that while a doctor remained to dress his wounds. His wife was the last person to leave but before she could step out of the room, Lowell said, “Wait.”

Lady Lowell turned to look at her husband wondering what he wanted now. She had made up her mind that the second she returned home, she was going to demand a divorce. She had had it enough with Lowell.

“Will you ever forgive me?” he asked.
