Chapter Hundred-and-Fifty-Three

**3rd Person POV**

The Fae queen had seen enough. She dragged her son across the room and away from all the chaos into a quiet place. She had done it so fast that Lucian had to let Regina's hand slip away and now he was panicking that something would happen to her. He was worried about her. He feared that if he was not with her, she would not be protected.

“Mother! You cannot…”

“Do not mother me! What do you think you are doing, Lucian? Is this a joke to you?” she demanded. In all her years that she had been married to Hades and had had Lucian as her son, she had never seen him behave recklessly like he was some hormonal teenager.

“Of course not, mother but you must understand that Marilyn…”

“Lucian! You need to focus. The throne is empty and we must claim it. We do not have a choice, we must claim it. We do not have time to concentrate on some reincarnated soul, okay?” even as the Fae queen spoke she knew that her son was not paying attention to her. His mind seemed to be instead on some ordinary girl who had strolled into their works from the beyond…

“She is my…”

“And a moment before all this you would have had to offer her soul to Hades,” the Fae queen paused and looked at her son with a raised eyebrow, “Did you know she was your mate before Hades' demise? Lucian if you knew and you said nothing…”

“It does not matter anymore, mother.”

“You will be accused of killing your father, you may become unfit for the throne. Lucian, did you even stop to think of the consequence of your action before you went all silly about some girl?” seldom was the Fae Queen angry but right now, Lucian could see the sparks of anger in her eyes.

“The girl will not jeopardise my claim to the throne,” returned Lucian. He did not expect his mother to understand any of it now but he knew that Marilyn was a lot more. He had read about her soul a very long time ago and so many times that when he saw her he recognised her at once. He had not been sure what he would have done if Hades had not died. In all honesty, he had wanted to go to his father to beg that he not extinguish her soul.

“Why did you not run it by me first Lucian? I do not like discovering things in the throne room. You should have told me,” the Fae queen said.

“There was no time to…”

“But there was enough time for Princess Eris to seduce you? Why did you not tell me?”

“Father would have killed me.”

“Exactly! And everybody is going to think that you killed your father now.”

“I am not afraid of people knowing my weaknesses. If they are in the open, I am a free man. But Aegan… Prince Aegan has a lot to hide and a lot of weak spots. You should not worry too much mother… he is no match for us,” Lucian did his best to assure his mother.

“You do know what is at stake, don't you? We will be vanquished… our people will cease to exist anywhere if you do not become the King of the Underworld. You cannot afford to screw this up.”

Princess Eris knew the walk of shame. She had done it so many times that it felt like she knew shame personally. It was exactly what she was doing now. She was walking away slowly from the scene; she was taking steps away from it all. She could not face her son; she did not want to look at his face; she could not bring herself to look at anybody's face. She just wanted to crawl away without being noticed.

She'd had a thing for Lucian a very long time ago. It had been so long ago that she could not believe Lucian had brought it up now. It had been stupid, very stupid but she had once fallen head over heels for the son of the Fae queen. She had fallen in love with her stepson and her arch-enemy. She could not explain her feelings then but she knew then that if she did not make a move on Lucian, she was going to go crazy.

However, the minute she seduced him, she knew it was a mistake. He had rejected her and would have nothing to do with her but the more he pushed her away, the more she had wanted him. Gradually, her love turned into hate and resentment and currently all that was left of it was shame and guilt.

“Mother?” she had not seen Aegan stand up or even walk towards her.

“Is it… is it true? You wanted to sleep with Lucian?” demanded Aegan. She braced herself for the disappointment in his eyes and looked into them, “Yes, he is a very fine man but you are going to be king and I will do everything within my power to ensure that.”

“Actually, all you have to do is change the story. You seduced him and the two of you spent a passionate moment together and…” Princess Eris slapped her son hard across the cheek. What he was suggesting was her death. It would mean that she would cease to exist in this world.

“Your everything has limitations, doesn't it? You know what makes the Fae Queen better than you? She will give up her soul for her son to sit on the throne but you will only give up your cookie… that's just the extent you are willing to go for me.”

Princess Eris would have raised her hand to hit Aegan again but he was already gone from her sight.

“Your Highness?” it was Derek who called to her softly.

“Derek… please not now. I need a moment, please?”
