Chapter Fifty

“You suspect foul play in this matter? I think this is the universe letting you know that Regina is not worthy to carry your child,” insisted Nydia but I did not believe her. If the universe was trying to tell me that she would not have been chosen as my mate.

“I do not want to put the innocent to death,” came my reply but I at once regretted saying that immediately.

“So you had no plans of killing her, did you? All this time you have been…”

“That is not what I meant Nydia. All I am saying is that there is a chance the blame is not Regina and I would like to try having another child with…”

“I will not allow it,” she said with finality in her tone.

“I am afraid you do not make decisions for me. If I want to do it, I will,” I responded before storming off.

But a full week passed and nothing came out of the investigation. I had to follow the law. Perhaps, Nydia was right. Regina was not meant for me. And no matter how much Kane told me I would regret ending her life I had to follow through with it else my subjects would think of me as a weak king.

Gina's POV

At long last I was reunited with my horse, Tristan. I patted his head fondly and he reciprocated with neighing softly in approval.

I was in a forest that led directly to my mother's pack. It had taken longer than expected to achieve this. One reason was that Alpha Dagen wanted to confirm that I had lost the child naturally and was not poisoned. I had been scared because I had thought the physician would discover my lie but he had told the king instead that I still had the pulse of the child within me but it was as good as dead. He had detected a weak pulse because I had taken several glasses of klov water that was said to make the pulse weak.

On the way to the graveyard, we were robbed. This of course had been a distraction for my escape. It was in the confusion that I took my chance and found my way to a place that Lord Tyler had described to me before. He had told me that I would see Tristan and everything was just like he had said.

I climbed my horse and began to gallop towards my mother's pack but I had not been riding for long when someone on a horse blocked my movement. I had to stop my horse abruptly to avoid a crash.

“Who are you?” I asked without fear even though my insides quaked. The person had on a mask so I had no way of knowing who it was. I hoped it was a simple thief and not someone from the Shadowclaw pack.

The person removed the helmet and I froze in fear on my horse.

“You don't look happy to see your good friend, I am a little disappointed.”

“L…lord Ed…Edvin?” I quipped. Of all the people I had thought would catch me before I reached my mother's pack, Lord Edvin had not crossed my mind at all.

“Where are you going without telling your friends goodbye?” he asked me and I stood transfixed, unable to give him an answer.

“Lord Edvin… I… I…”

“Save the excuse. I do not think there is anything you could tell me. What will it be? That you decided to take a ride in the forest?” he asked.

I felt for the sword Lord Tyler had left me alongside the horse. If I had to fight my way out of this I would even though it meant my death. One thing I was sure of was that if I ever returned to the Shadowclaw pack, it would be without my soul.

“Lady Regina, I had thought we were friends. There is no need to take out your sword and if you go that route you will only hurt your child,” he said to me and a wave of fear washed over me. How did he know the baby was still alive inside me?

“Diane? Diane gave you my notes,” I said in anger realising just now how stupid it was of me to trust Diane when I knew full well that she was Beta Edvin's lover.

“It was you in the garden that night?” he quipped with a smile.

“Just let me be. I just want to live, is that so hard to ask for?” I screamed at him.

“You are feisty, I will give you that but you cannot leave here today. If you do, they will find you,” he told me.

“And you are not part of them?” I asked.

“You love your child. That is enough reason for me to protect you. I trust you will keep the heir safe until the time comes for him to inherit his throne,” said Beta Edvin.

“He is my son. I will give my last breath to keep him safe,” I responded fiercely, holding my belly as I did so.

An arrow whizzed past me that very moment and in a blink of an eye Lord Edvin had blocked the arrow.

“Those are bandits but we must hurry before they attract the guards,” said Lord Edvin, nodding his head for me to pick the reins of my horse.
