Chapter Eighteen

“Dagen? My feet are beginning to hurt. You were such a fine dancer earlier, is something the matter?” Nydia’s voice drew me out of my reverie.

“My apologies, dear. It is a matter of the state that has my mind preoccupied,” came my response.

I was not sure why I had lied. I had not even known that I had lied until I had done so.

But my eyes refused to stop looking at the two and the longer I stared at them, the angrier I got. The only thing that kept me from storming to where they were seated was Nydia’s soft hold on me.

“You are worried about Tyler and Regina?”

“Huh?” I was startled by what Nydia had said.

“You should not let such things worry you, if she proves to be useless we can always end things with her,” Nydia held my face in her hands so my gaze was fixated on her. I had no choice therefore but to smile however my heart began to tremble at her words. For some reason the idea of ending Regina filled me with dread. This was unusual because I had planned to kill her once she could birth my heir.

“You are right, I should not worry about such,” I said to Nydia as her eyes looked at mine for an answer.

The music ended and at once I disentangled myself from Nydia’s hold. It was as though my mind had no control over my body as I made my way to where Tyler sat but Regina was not beside him, she had been replaced with some red haired chit.

“Where is Regina?” I asked, my voice filled with venom.

“Why would you ask me that? I do not know,” came his response.

He was lucky we were at a social gathering. If that was not the case, I would have strangled him with my bare hands.

“Don’t play games with me Tyler, she was seated beside you; the both of you were eating and…”

“She left after her meal, she was rather hungry. Did you marry her to starve her?” he asked with sarcasm.

Again, he was lucky we were among respectable men or I would have slit his throat.

“Stay away from her; she’s mine, do you understand?” I told him with a hard glare.

“Yours? You publicly humiliated her, you made a toast in honor of your lover while married to your wife who happens to be present, you really are something, aren’t you?” I could not understand his passionate anger. What was it to him how I treated Regina?

I wanted to pummel his face with a punch but Kane stopped me.

“He’s right, you really are something. Regina is your mate and no matter how hard you try to make Nydia the center of your life you cannot deny what you really feel,” he said.

“Deny what I feel? I feel nothing,” was my reply.

“Nothing? Then why does it bother you that Tyler sat with her? If you feel nothing for her you would not care in the least for her,” Kane told me.

“I am this way because you are confusing me. It is your fault, you keep telling me she’s my mate and all that and…”

“Let’s make a deal then,” he said in a tired tone.

“A deal?”

“Yes.”

“About?”

“Regina, I will remain silent within you for three days. If you do not think of her or feel anything for her then I am wrong and I will never bring her up again but if she crosses your mind then I am right.”

It sounded like a good deal because I did need a break from Kane, always reminding me that Regina was my mate and I was wasting my time with Nydia.

“Deal,” I said to cement the agreement.

“I shall speak to you in three days.”

And just like that everything was quite within me.

Gina's POV.

We had eaten our meal in silence even though I had a million questions I wanted to ask him as I was certain there were several questions he wanted to ask me too. When I had my fill I thanked him and left.

I wandered about the rather large ballroom that seemed to stretch for miles doing nothing but appreciating the fine things about me. A year ago I would not have dreamed of being in a ball like this. My father had forbidden me from doing such things and irrespective of the circumstances of my being here I was only happy to be where I was now. I smiled as I watched the ladies smiling underneath their fans signaling to men across the room. Unfortunately, I could not do that. I was stuck in a marriage with my mate who loved another woman.

“Get a grip,” Raven’s soft voice came through.

This brought a smile to my face. At least I was not all alone. I had Raven.

“Have you no eye for beauty?” someone stopped in front of me and my heart began to beat rather rapidly. I had never imagined that anyone would speak to me.

“Huh?” was my response as I stood there stupefied.

“Nydia did say she was worried about your mental state,” another person said.

“She was being polite; obviously, she’s an idiot,” said another, eyeing me from head to toe.

They all had soft voices which carried harsh undertones. These were not people here to make friends with me, they were here on Nydia’s whim to make me feel worthless.

“Even if your function is to breed Alpha Dagen’s children, shouldn’t you make an effort?” one of them said.

“Nothing you have on suits you. Do you not know the colors that go well with your skin?” another asked.

“Who are you people?” The strength in my voice shocked even me and I saw them shrink back. They had not expected that I would reply to them.

“What? Watch your mouth you wench. Have you any idea the kind of people you are speaking with?”
