Chapter Hundred-and-Twenty-Six
**Gina's POV**
I was not sure as to what my task in this party was, so I found the least busiest place in the garden to stand while waiting for further orders.
It was okay for a while until someone groped me. I was startled by this unwelcome touch only to turn and see a man with horns smirking at me.
“I need a dance,” he said, grabbing my arm. I was about to answer him when another hand grabbed my hand firmly and said, “I'm afraid she is spoken for.”
The man who had groped me grunted in dissatisfaction and stalked away. I turned to see my saviour, and I was confronted with Lucian.
“I…I…” I was tongue-tied as his beauty took my senses away.
“Everyone I know has the same reaction when they look at me,” he had a kind smile which I did not know existed in the underworld.
I cleared my throat and attempted to say something that would not make me sound like a complete idiot.
“Thank you,” I said to him, trying to block his beautiful face out of my mind. It was weird. No one had ever made me feel this way before, not even Dagen.
“Those are words that hold no meaning here. If anyone helps you it is because they want something more in return from you,” he said.
“I see. So what is it that you want from me?” I asked him.
“What do I want from you? Let me see. You?” His gaze was intoxicating.
“I… I… don't think that… I…”
“You are unlike most people, no one has ever hesitated in giving me a response,” a smile danced on his face as he said this. He was clearly enjoying himself and something told me he found pleasure in making women swoon over him.
“I cannot give myself to you. I…”
“Another thing you cannot do is refuse anyone here. If you do so you are on your way to ruin,” he said.
“What do you want from me?” I asked him.
“Why are you here? What do you seek?” he asked me.
“You do not know? I would think that majestic creatures such as yourself would have the power to read minds,” I said in response, not willing to divulge my purpose here.
“No one can read your mind here, not even King Hades,” he said to me. That was a huge relief.
“I can see that you are relieved to hear this. You must be here for love then,” he remarked.
“Love?”
“I sense a good energy around you; you are not capable of hate,” he said.
I tried to envision what I would do to those who had taken my twins for me and realised that my mind was blank. I had never thought about what I would do to that person. This entire time my mind had been only on getting my twins back.
“How would you know that?”
“I also know that love and hate have the same mother. Your love can turn to blinding rage, a rage much stronger than all of hell,” he said.
“Am I dead?” it was the question that had been on the tip of my tongue the whole time, especially when I had seen Aegan suck that woman dry.
“You are among the dead. What do you think?”
“Will I ever get a straight answer from anyone here?”
“What do you really want to know?” he asked me.
“Am I allowed to leave the underworld?” I asked him, holding my breath, scared of what the answer might be.
“Everyone comes to the underworld for a reason. If you find what you seek, you may leave,” returned Lucian.
“I see,” it meant that if I did not find my twins here I was condemned to remain here forever.
The two of us stood in silence and watched the party.
“Follow me, I want to show you something,” he said, and I did as he instructed. We kept walking through meadows of flowers until we reached a golden door. However, before Lucian could open the door, Aegan's mother stopped him.
“That maid is mine,” she said with loathing in her voice.
“She ceased being yours when King Hades commanded Derek to give her a room among his servants,” Lucian's voice was firm.
“I have had enough of this spite. I will not stand by and allow everything I have worked for to get taken away from me,” Aegan's mother's eyes were burning with smoke.
Whatever was going on between them, it was my prayer that Lucian win.
“No one is taking anything away from you Eris,” Lucian's voice was calm but firm and his grip on my hand was tight.
“That maid was assigned to work for…”
“Would you like King Hades to discover that you bribed Derek to give you the finest minds?” Lucian's voice was low but clear and threatening.
“I did no such thing,” Eris denied the allegation Lucian had against her.
“Really?”
“You have no evidence,” she said.
“Do you want to leave that to chance?” Lucian asked her.
“I will be back for her,” she said, staring into Lucian's eyes before walking away.
“How do I avoid her?” I asked Lucian. I had a feeling I was in deep trouble.
“You can't. King Hades has his eyes on you, you cannot avoid anyone in this court,” returned Lucian, opening the gold door for me to pass through.
“About that, do you know why he did that?” I asked. I still did not understand why King Hades had placed me among his servants.
“No one knows the mind of Hades for it is very deep. It's bottomless.”
I wanted to ask Lucian about the fiery Red Moon. If there was no concept of time here, how would they know when it was time for rituals? But I feared that asking would reveal the reason I had come here.
“If there is no time here, does that mean King Hades' kingdom is forever?” I asked Lucian. Perhaps he could provide me with useful information.
“Who says there is no concept of time here?” Lucian asked me, surprised to hear me say that.
