Chapter Forty-nine

Gina's POV

I was not sure how I felt about being pregnant. I had known it could happen as Alpha Dagen had been seeing me more frequently but I was not expecting it to happen so soon.

“How do you feel?” Alpha Dagen came into my room. His face looked red with anger but his features seemed to soften when his eyes met my stomach.

“I am quite alright. The pain is gone,” came my response.

“You must take extra care of your health now that you are pregnant,” he said with a heavy voice.

“I understand your Majesty,” came my response. I wanted him to leave so that I could think about what next. I was pregnant now so it was time to leave this place.

He studied my face for a few minutes; he looked like he was in deep thought then he left as soon as he had come in.

I spent the night thinking of my escape plan. I was still far behind and I knew nobody who could help me escape this place.

I had no other ally here either. Diane could not help me escape this place neither could Lord Edvin but I paused when my mind conjured Lord Tyler. If anything I was aware of his expertise at climbing walls. The bottom line though was that I needed to find a map if I ever hoped to leave this place.

My escape plan came to me when Diane spilled sauce on my clothes.

“My lady, I am so sorry. I will clean this up,” she said. She looked frightened at the sight of the stain and it was clear why; I looked like I was covered in blood.

It struck me then that the only reason Alpha Dagen was keeping me alive was the fact that I was carrying his child. Now that Lady Nydia had returned to the palace, we never saw each other and Lady Nydia had begun to parade herself once more as Luna. The message was clear: the moment I was delivered of this child I would be executed.

I was like a prisoner in this place too. My door was always locked and although I had a plethora of maids that tended to my every need or rather the needs of the baby I carried, I had no freedom. I could not move like before.

But with this, I could be free. It was very likely that I would be killed but if I did not do this my death was guaranteed. This soup would free me.

I was going to fake my miscarriage but first, there were a couple of things I needed to do.

Like the map. I could not escape the palace without knowledge of how to get to my mother's pack. If not I could land myself in another dangerous situation and it might be that another Alpha would not be as gracious as Alpha Dagen and keep me alive till this point. I also needed my horse, Tristan, so I could travel very fast. Of course, a horse would be too conspicuous given that I wanted to escape without being seen but when I had made it out of the lack successfully, it would come in handy.

So I wrote a letter to Lord Tyler whom I considered my only ally. If he betrayed me then so be it. But it was time to make my intentions clear.

Since Alpha Dagen had kept me under lock, Lord Tyler had smuggled in novels for me through Diane that had occupied my time. Sometimes, he left notes in between the novels. But the notes he left were disguised as codes. Such that his notes were usually made up of gibberish to anyone who did not understand that to decipher the note, one had to read the novel. Sometimes the sixth word of four pages apart would make up the message for the note.

The last novel Lord Tyler had sent me had the title, Confessions of the Sanhedrins. It was a novel that chronicled the reign of four kings whose mission was to expand their empire to the ends of the world.

It was with this novel I wrote my note to Lord Tyler. The note when deciphered read,

I will not bore you with my situation which you are well aware of. My life is in danger and you are the only one I can rely on to help me. This time next week I will feign the death of my child and I have come to understand that the consequence of losing an heir is death. I will be transported to the graveyard of the Alphas where the remains of the child will be removed to be buried before I am executed. I intend to escape during this period and I will need your assistance. If you are willing to help me please send a map with the next book.
Thank you.

I received a response the very next day:

What you intend is very dangerous but I understand your position and I am well aware of the Alpha's anger. I will help you; at the back of this note is a map of the pack and surrounding packs. You will need Tristan also You have nothing to worry about, I will take care of everything.

The note felt reassuring and I could only hope that this was not a trap.

Dagen's POV

“The law is very clear, my love. She failed to carry the baby to full term; she killed the royal seed,” said Nydia.

She was right. That was the provision of the law but this was a peculiar case or at least it felt that way to me. For one, I was finding it very hard to believe that Regina's miscarriage had been natural. Somehow I still doubted Nydia. I could not shake off the feeling that she had done something to cause this.

“I would like to investigate the death of my child,” I said in response. I would not execute Regina until I had gotten to the very bottom of this.
