Chapter Three-Hundred-and-Twenty-Eight
3rd Person POV
The next court session in the Dark Moon pack took a somber turn. Charlotte had revealed her hand. Anyone who openly opposed would get the axe without being accused of treason. Charlotte had not known that one day she would find her uncle's stash of blackmail material useful. When Napoleon was king, he had gathered dirt on all the noble families to ensure that he could manipulate them however he chose to.
Lord Plato had not been the only one to get axed. There were others who had committed similar crimes or even worse crimes than Lord Plato and Charlotte had taken pleasure in revealing their shoddiness one after the other. No one was opposed to her plans of creating institutions and making the system more democratic, they were just worried about their heads staying on their bodies.
Charlotte was savouring her victory at court and she had completely forgotten about the ring she had tucked away from sight.
She had just finished court that day and was headed to her study to attend to some important business. What she did not expect to see was her father and Kristoff waiting for her in her study. The colour drained from her face when she saw the duo in her study.
“Father! Prince Kristoff! What an unexpected visit,” Charlotte tried desperately to save this but she knew there was just no way. She had promised Kristoff that she would tell her father about the engagement and she had not said a word to her father.
“Indeed! Imagine my surprise!” Dagen faked a wide smile that made Charlotte doubt how much he knew already and how angry he was.
“Prince Kristoff, if you don't mind. I'd like to have a word with my father, Alpha Dagen,” Charlotte said, hoping that Kristoff would be understanding.
“I did not know you would address your fiancé in such a formal tone,” said Alpha Dagen, his arms folded which was a classic way of telling his daughter that he was very angry with her.
Charlotte had no card to play; she had won at court but failed at love.
“It turns out I am the only one who knows that I am your fiancé,” said Kristoff, he was not smiling either.
“You have to understand, there was a funeral. No one would have time to listen to my joyous news,” said Charlotte with a shrug, trying to play it cool.
“I thought that perhaps you were just ashamed of us?” said Kristoff.
“Ashamed? Of course not! That is ridiculous! I told my brother and Harlin and… not good… I will shut up now,” said Charlotte realising that she was only making things worse for herself by talking.
“Your brother knows about this? Harlin knew about this before me? Is that how little you think of me?” quipped Dagen. His feelings had been hurt. He could not believe that his favourite child was doing this to him.
“Father, I'm sorry. I just thought you would be mad,” pouted Charlotte. Dagen tried not to be swayed by his daughter's cute face. He knew she only did her face like that and pouted her lips that way when she wanted to get out of trouble.
“Mad? Because you're getting married?”
“He's a vampire,” Charlotte pointed out in a soft tone.
Kristoff wanted to remind the father-daughter duo that he was still in the room.
“Honey, I'm mad because I'm losing my little princess to you know… I'll be mad whoever you end up with but in a good way. I'm just honoured I'll get to walk you down the aisle,” said Dagen, his eyes tearing up.
“So you're okay with me getting married to Kristoff?” quipped Charlotte.
“Of…”
“Never! No marriage is happening! After all I've done for you, I'm the last to find out about this?”
Regina stormed into the study with such force that Kristoff knew marrying Charlotte would indeed be possible only by a miracle.
“Mother!” Charlotte squealed but it seemed like her nightmares were unfolding all at once.
“Oh, hi Kristoff,” Regina only realised now that Kristoff was standing in the study. She looked at the vampire and was a bit confused.
“You are marrying a vampire?” It was not because Regina was discriminatory about vampires that she had reacted that way but because she was genuinely surprised that Charlotte was getting married to one. It was surprising that Charlotte was getting married to anyone at all. Regina had always thought that if Charlotte would get married it would be to Harlin because it seemed like he was the only boy she could tolerate besides her brother.
“Mum!”
“Why didn't you come to me first? huh?”
“This is not a competition of who knows that I'm getting married!” Charlotte shouted.
“You're getting married?”
Charlotte turned to see her heavily pregnant aunt standing at the door of the study.
“Aunt Emily! You're supposed to be in bed!” exclaimed Charlotte.
“The stupid physician is just keeping me away from… f*ck you! It hurts, damn it! Get the stupid physician!” screamed Emily as she grappled with the pain of a contraction.
“I'm bleeding! There's something wet! My baby is turning into blood! Somebody do something!” screamed Emily as the four others stood in shock, unable to think for a second.
“I'll get the physician!” said Kristoff, leaving the study to look for a maid or anyone he could ask for help.
Meanwhile, Dagen and Charlotte helped their aunt into a chair.
“She needs to lie down,” said Regina, looking for something she could put her cousin on.
“Where's the stupid physician! Somebody do something!” screamed Emily.
“Thoma, I need to get Thoma,” Dagen said and walked out of the study. Regina had found a light mattress she could lay on the floor. It was incredibly odd to find one in a study but it was not time to question how furniture was arranged in the palace.
