Chapter Hundred-and-Forty-Nine

**3rd Person POV**

Irvette felt like the world was mocking her.

Pregnant?

She had spent months at the underworld running evil errands for her father, part of which involved killing her mother and now she was pregnant?

She had helped murder her brother and she had life growing within her.

“I would terminate the pregnancy,” Irvette had said to Emily one day while in the middle of the ocean. There was nothing else she could do about the child. She did not deserve it and she did not have the qualities of a mother. She had killed people so she could not handle life.

“It will not help your cause,” the cold princess had said in return. She had been thrown off course at first. Did the cold princess know she was helping her father?

“What?”

“You want to take on your father's throne. This child within you… whether the Elders like it or not, it is Royal blood and has committed no crime. They cannot reject it and they cannot leave the throne empty for long,” Emily had responded in her usual calm voice.

Irvette however thought her eyes were saying something else. To her, it felt like the cold princess was telling her that terminating the pregnancy was adding blood to the blood already in her hands and she hated that thought even more. The thought of adding another number to the lives she had taken filled her with dread. She was going to go insane if she had to be responsible for one more life.

“Oh, I see. But I cannot possibly keep it. The father… my husband, Lord Harlin, I hear that he is dead,” as she had said those words to Emily, a shiver ran down her spine. There was another thing she had to worry about if she decided to keep the baby.

Her father.

George could show up and demand the newborn for his insane cause; she would have no option but to hand it over. Even if she tried to fight for the child's life, she would only end up dead because George had more power than her; he would snatch the baby from her and end her life.

“You are a strong woman. You can do this alone, I believe that,” the other princess gave her an encouraging smile but Irvette did not believe in herself. She had no fight left within her.

“I… You know about my father and his uhm… evils. It's no secret really. It's just…what if he wants my baby?”

“You can cut him off. Ensure he has no access to your child,” came Emily's response.

Irvette wishes it was that simple.

“Your father? So you still see him?” Emily had asked her.

Irvette took a deep breath in and braced herself for the lie she had practiced already so many times in her head.

“No… not really. I saw him one time and he uh… he threatened me and uhm… it was really ugly, I do not want to uhm… talk about him,” she had said in response. It was what her father had told her to say.

“If you return home to be a ruler over your people, you will be asked about your father. You will need to talk about him eventually,” Emily had said.

Irvette knew this but she did not want to confront it at that moment. By the time she reached home and the Council of Elders were asking her questions, she would know what to do then.

“I will deal with it then,” returned Irvette.

Eventually, the ship reached the shores of her home and she was still not ready.

There were guards waiting for her upon her arrival. It was almost as if they had come to arrest a criminal and yet they were anxious to offend a royal; possibly the only royal left in their pack. She had gotten to know later on that George had killed everyone that could be remotely linked to royalty.

She stepped down from the ship gracefully; with her head held high and a straight posture. She looked only ahead as she walked just like her mother had once taught her; she carried herself with grace and pride as she approached who she knew was the head of the guards that surrounded her.

“What is this about?” her voice carried the usual irritation and disdain it held for those inferior to her.

“Your Highness, we have come to escort you to your home,” the guard welcomed her with a false smile. By now, word had spread amongst the people that Alpha George had been nothing but a fraud.

“Is that so? Then why do I sense that you have come to escort a criminal?” she raised her voice. Even if her father was a fraud, she was still a princess. The blood that ran through her veins were of royalty and she would not allow anyone to look down upon her or upon the child that she carried within her.

“Your Highness, please if you will allow us to do our jobs?” quipped the guard, hoping this would not turn into a physical confrontation where he would be forced to handcuff the princess to the palace.

“How do I stop you from doing your job? And if you are doing your job, where is my damn carriage?” demanded Irvette. Were they planning to escort her on foot to the palace like she were some common criminal?

“It is… the carriage. Of course! Princess, if you would just wait a few minutes. We will… we will…”

“I am pregnant and you expect me to wait a few minutes while standing?” Irvette's voice was charged with anger. The guards looked at each other in shock then they looked at the Princess’ stomach. The pregnancy was still subtle but it had begun to show; she was indeed pregnant.

“Princess… if you will sit here and… congratulations, we are so sorry for your loss and… please sit here and we will…”
