Chapter Hundred-and-Forty-Two

**Third Person POV**

Everyone knew that Lord Harlin had been doing his very best even though he was grieving his father anew and his wife, Irvette who had refused to speak with him. There were many people who held the opinion that Harlin should remain in power but he did not feel like he deserved it.

It was true that Alpha George had drugged their minds but Harlin still felt that he should have known better. For instance, his relationship with Regina. He had been good friends with Regina before he had known they were mates. He still found it hard to wrap his head around how he had rejected Regina publicly and he had been too quick to accuse her of killing his father.

“I do not want the throne. I am content with being Beta of the pack,” returned Harlin.

“It is not about content, Lord Harlin. It is about finding an upright person to rule the pack. It is about restoring our reputation as an elite pack. As of now, our reputation is in the mud; we must do all it takes to become a pack to be reckoned with,” said Elder Moses.

“That is why it is important that I do not become Alpha of the pack. You must remember noble men that I am son-in-law to Alpha George. I am unfit to rule this pack,” returned Lord Harlin. He was not sure he could ever trust himself to even get married again. He certainly could not keep the lineage as he was not ready or willing to have children. It would be too much responsibility if he was made Alpha.

“Have you heard anything from Princess Irvette of late? It is safe to say that your marriage with her is now obsolete. You do not need to worry about her leaving a debt on your reputation. You will marry someone else…”

“He cannot just get married to someone else…”

“Noble men, please let us not get distracted. I believe it is for the best if we stay on topic. Besides, it is important that we get a new leader; one that is untainted in all of this.”

“Perhaps we are looking for one too soon? We should revisit this topic another time when things are more stable in the pack.”

“I agree, we should not rush this decision.”

Soon the Elders and noblemen of the Blood Moon pack left the palace and Lord Harlin was left alone to his thoughts.

He was going up to the study when he saw Alpha George standing at the top of the stairs. Harlin rubbed his eyes; he believed that he was seeing things. There was no way Alpha George had returned. Of course, he should know that if he did, he would be arrested at once.

“You can rub your eyes as much as you can, it will not change the fact that I am standing right in front of you,” said Alpha George.

“GUARDS,” screamed Lord Harlin to which Alpha George laughed.

“They cannot hear you Harlin so do not waste your strength.”

“Why are you doing this?” questioned Harlin. He was not scared; he was just disappointed. He had looked up to Alpha George as a father of some sort.

“What do you mean Harlin? Doing what exactly? You are the one that is doing that which is annoying. Why are you ruling my pack? huh?” Alpha George's voice was accusatory. He was looking directly into Harlin's eyes hoping to hypnotise Harlin so he could do his bidding but he was annoyed as it did not seem to be working.

“Are you surprised you have no control over my mind anymore? How could you do it? Turn thousands of people into zombies so you could become king,” said Harlin.

“You pitiful thing; you rejected the woman you love because you had no control over your actions. Aren't you pitiful?”

“What are you doing here? You have no kingdom to rule; nobody wants you here.”

“To end your life of course. If I don't get to rule then you do not,” Lord Harlin had not noticed the sword until it had drilled a hole through him.

“You will not get away with this,” were Lord Harlin's last words before he passed onto the other side.

Hours later, a guard found his dead body on the stairs.

The Council of Elders were in the Blood Moon pack the very next day alongside Alpha Dagen. The Blood Moon pack was marked with a heavy air of sorrow. The people had not been told yet of the tragedy that had struck them once more but the very wind whispered of the sorrow that had dampened the pack.

Elder Walker was shaking his head. He would have never thought that such a thing could happen. Who would want to kill Lord Harlin? The man had been an emblem of peace. He had brought radical changes to the pack since he had been placed in charge of things. To have him die this way was beyond tragic.

“Do we know anything about the killer?” inquired Elder Thaddeus.

“The killer was not caught. His blood was still warm when we found him so we locked all the exits at once. We hope to catch the assassin,” replied Elder Moses.

The Council of Elders present all shared a look. They knew at once who was responsible for Lord Harlin's death.

“Is there something we should know?” Elder Gregory had noticed the look they shared.

“We have good reason to believe that Lord Harlin was killed by George,” returned Elder Davis.

“How…Why…”

“We have just received intelligence that Princess Irvette is returning home,” Elder Thaddeus said.

“Princess Irvette? As far as we are concerned she is no princess to us,” said Elder Moses.

“Unfortunately, she remains a princess and if she can prove her innocence in what her father has been doing…” Elder Thaddeus allowed the remaining words to linger in the air. Although it was clear to all why George had murdered Lord Harlin.
