Chapter Fifty-one

Dagen’s POV

“Edvin, It's a good thing you're here. Regina is missing; I cannot find her,” I was anxious and feeling a lot of things I should not be feeling at the moment. There had been a robbery attack on the envoy that was to transport her to the graveyard designated for the Royals so that my son could join his ancestors but she was nowhere to be found.

“You look very worried. Were you not planning to end her life?” Lord Edvin asked me and I contemplated this for a while.

“You know fully well that you would not have gone through with it,” teased my wolf.

“Shut up!”

“Did it occur to you that she may have escaped your grasp?”

“Regina wouldn't do that. She cannot…”

“Do you really think anyone who had the opportunity to escape death would allow themselves to be slaughtered?”

Kane was right of course. It had not occurred to me until now that Regina had indeed escaped. But where would she go? And with my baby dead inside of her. The truth was, I would be doing her a favor by ending her life because if she allowed a dead child to remain in her womb, within weeks she would suffer from terrible infections and die a more agonizing death if she did not have the right care.

“Edvin, I need to find her,” I said, my voice betraying my desperation.

“Why? Because you badly want to bury your unborn child or because you want her to live?” Lord Edvin asked me.

“The Royal seed has to be properly buried. I am almost certain Regina has run away with the child,” said Lady Nydia who had just walked into my study.

“If you were in Regina's position, would you allow yourself to be killed when an opportunity for escape presents itself?” Edvin asked his twin sister.

“If I were in her position I would do what is best for the Royal seed. What she has done shows that she has no respect for this pack,” Nydia replied.

The two were always at each other’s throats but I did not have time for their cat and rat fight this night. Regina had been missing since high noon and I needed to find her before she died of an infection and worms ate up her body and the child.

“Edvin, can you check if there's any message from the borders? If she tries to leave the pack, I want to know,” I said to Edvin.

“And if she has crossed the border already? You have to understand that not every pack we share a border with will cooperate with us,” returned Lord Edvin.

“We should let them know that a criminal has crossed beyond our land and we would like her body, dead or alive. No pack would keep a criminal,” suggested Lady Nydia but I was uncomfortable with that idea. Somehow the image of Regina in handcuffs being rough-handled by strange men repulsed me.

“She is not a criminal. We cannot sully her reputation because of that,” said Lord Edvin. I was glad he gave that reply because if it had come from me Nydia would not be pleased. The truth was since Regina had become pregnant our relationship had been strained. We no longer saw eye to eye on anything and my attraction for her had begun to wane. I had found myself thinking of Regina's body whenever I was with Nydia.

“What does it matter? She is going to die anyway. She does not need her reputation. Besides, running away with the royal seed is a crime by itself,” that was also true. In fact, it was a crime that bore the same weight as treason but I was not about to voice that out.

“She carries the Royal child. Destroying her reputation is bad for the Royal seed,” replied Lord Edvin.

“How can we be sure it is the Royal seed that is within her? After all, you did see a man in bed with her,” said Nydia and my blood began to boil with a new type of anger.

Lord Edvin looked at me for confirmation and I said, “I saw a man trying to defile her while she was unconscious. I stopped him before he could do anything stupid and I believe we agreed it should remain between us.”

Lord Edvin looked pleased that my anger was directed at his sister.

Nydia was too stubborn however to heed my advice and keep quiet about the matter so she added, “You cannot be so sure he has not tried to lay with her before. Nor do you know…”

“The baby that died within her is mine. There is no question about it. I will not entertain such doubts, not even from you. Do you understand?” I asked, staring hard into Nydia's eyes.

“Alpha Dagen, I will send word to the border. I will ensure the Royal seed returns to the land of his ancestors,” Lord Edvin assured me and I relaxed. Lord Edvin was a man of his word and I knew he meant what he said.

“Well brother I wish you good luck,” said Nydia with a hint of sarcasm.

“I shall need it, thanks.”

“By the way, what have you been up to today? Your hair is covered in tiny leaves. It looks like you took a stroll in the forest,” said Nydia, cuttingly at her brother.

“What about you sister? You must be having a hard time seeing as you have so many wrinkles on your forehead,” replied Lord Edvin in the same spirit.

“Stop it both of you. We have important business to attend to,” I knew that if I did not put a stop to this now the two would go on and on the entire night. They are never tired of throwing insults at each other.

“Edvin should visit the infirmary before he leaves. He has been wincing in pain since and clutching his stomach,” said Nydia and I realized that she was right. I had been so caught up in my own worries that I had not sensed that Edvin was injured.
