Chapter Two-Hundred-And-Three

**3rd Person POV**

Edvin was grateful he could leave the duo. When they were passionate like they were now, it was nearly impossible to make them cool off. He went in search of Diane whom he knew would be on kitchen duty. He was disappointed to find that she was not there. He understood that she was pregnant so she might have been stuck in her room, sick. He was disappointed once more and even more so when her roommate told him that she had quit her job at the palace and she had mentioned something about returning to her hometown. Edvin thanked the roommate and rode a horse to a small house at the end of the market where he knew she lived.

When he got there, he saw no curtains on the windows. It was a sign that she had left already. He knocked on the door hoping that he was wrong. The door was opened by Diane who was surprised to see him.

“What do you want?” she demanded, angrily.

She was still trying to make peace with being dumped so she did not appreciate Edvin showing up at her door.

“I was poisoned when I was growing up and my physician told me that there was a good chance I would never have a child of my own,” said Edvin. He was speaking fast because Diane looked like she was going to slam the door on his face at any moment.

“So?”

“So, when you said you were pregnant. I thought it was for someone else. I could not imagine that it was mine. It is no excuse for how I treated you though but I am sorry Diane. Please forgive me,” he was pleading.

“How do you know it's yours?” she asked. The tensed muscles on her face had relaxed. It was impossible to remain angry with Edvin when he had such a remorseful expression on his face.

“I checked with my physician; it was a very embarrassing procedure for me but nothing like what I have put you through these past days,” returned Edvin. Diane forced her smile to remain hidden. She was trying very hard not to imagine the sort of procedure that had determined her baby could be his.

“I have made up my mind, Edvin. I am going to my hometown. My older brother will be happy to receive me. We may be poor but we are good people,” said Diane.

“No, no. I want to be a part of his life,” replied Edvin.

“He? You don't know that.”

“I have a feeling.”

“It doesn't change anything, Edvin. There is a wide social gap between us. Your family will treat my child with disdain. I do not want that sort of life for my child. I'm sorry Edvin but I have thought this through,” came Diane's response. She knew how children born to commoners were treated in noble families. There was no way she was going to subjugate her child to such a life.

“Diane, I love you…”

“That is the first time you're saying those words to me but I think what you mean is that you love your unborn child. You do not love me.”

“I do. And I am the biggest idiot for not telling you this sooner but I love you with everything that I am and I want to spend the rest of my life with you and our child,” Edvin had a serious expression on his face. Up until recently, he had given up on the idea of having a family but now that it was possible he did not care about politics. He did not care about what his extended family members would make of being joined in matrimony with an ordinary citizen. He loved her and he was going to marry her even if Dagen did not give him his blessings.

“Edvin, I cannot…”

“Please don't say that. I want to give this child the best of everything. I know our baby will not lack love from you but he will never know his father if you leave; you will be denying him his heritage if you leave; please don't take away this from him and if it's a girl then all the same,” replied Edvin.

“Do you know what people will say? That I got knocked up to move up. They will…”

“Let them talk; it won't matter. I will protect you and our child from wagging tongues, I swear.”

“Edvin…” her voice still bore reluctance.

“Please give me a chance to love this child, please. We'll figure out the rest later, just come with me tonight, okay?”

Diane did not see how she could refuse Edvin when he had made his case so passionately. Besides, he was right. The child was innocent and deserved a much better life than she could afford to give it.

“Fine but if I ever feel…”

“I assure you that no harm will come to you, okay?” Edvin was relieved. He wanted to get her to his house as soon as possible. He knew that it was not safe out here. Any moment from now, the street could be swarming with vampires and he did not want Diane to be in the middle of that.

He helped her grab a few essentials and placed her on his horse. As he was about to climb on the horse himself, he noticed a wolf leap out to attack Diane. Edvin was quick to act; he grabbed the wolf by its neck and dragged it away from Diane. He was filled with so much rage that he punched the wolf until it was a bloody mess. The wolf managed still to escape from its grasp and it disappeared into the market stalls. Edvin noticed, however, that it had run away standing on two legs instead of on four like a werewolf would. He would have loved to investigate the matter further but getting Diane to safety was his priority.
