Chapter Hundred-And-Eighty-Six
**3rd Person POV**
“Look at me, Ivy. You are going to be just fine, okay?” Alison did her best to assure her sister that all would be well.
“What if I can't do it? What if…”
“You can do this and you will do this. You do not really have an option here,” Alison said, subtly reminding her sister that she was putting her life at risk to anyone for the sins she had committed even though she'd had no control over what she had done.
“And heavens forbid you die, you will die as a hero.”
****
A hero.
Those were the words that kept Irvette going all day. They were the words that had brought her calm. It was not because she wanted to be remembered for doing something good. She was well aware that she did not deserve such fame but she would be doing something noble for her people and the rest of the world. It was the fact that she was risking her life for the greater good that kept her calm. She knew that no matter what happened today, she would have saved thousands of lives that would have otherwise stood no chance.
Just as her carriage entered the pack, George appeared beside her. She acted a bit surprised and displeased to see him. She behaves as though she were scared. It was not pretending per se because she was actually terrified that he would kill her on the spot. It was possible that he had discovered her lie and was here to finish the job he should have completed a long time ago. As he sat beside her, the image of George standing over her father's body kept on replaying in her mind.
“What happened to you? You used to embrace me with joy whenever you saw me. Now, I sense that you do not want me around anymore,” said George with sarcasm. He knew that Irvette could not be as willing to do as he wanted her to do like in the past because it had been a while since he had fed her the drug that always made her so eager to please him. He could not afford to buy it anymore and he had discovered that fear was a better drug anyway. He hated that he no longer had access to souls which were the primary currency in the underworld. He was thus restricted in many ways. All of that did not matter anyway; he had to look at the bigger picture. Once he could get Regina to give him her soul it was game over. He would become more powerful than even Hades. He would be truly unstoppable and his lifelong dream would be materialised.
“What do you want?” Irvette asked with trembling fingers. George notices the terror in her fingers and holds them in a gesture that would have been comforting if it were someone else but was mainly creepy given that it was George.
“What did we speak about the last time, huh? Why don't you remind me,” said George. Irvette tried not to look at his face as she was sure the sickening smile pasted on George's face was going to make her throw up.
“You wanted to know about the twins,” whispered Irvette.
“I have a feeling you are about to tell me something very pleasant to my ears. I know you are about to sing a beautiful song in my ears in fact. So tell me, what about them?” he asked.
“They are with Queen Emily,” she said in a low tone as though reluctant to give out that information. George ignored her reluctance. He did not care if she was happy running his errands. What he cared for was if the work got done. It was all that mattered to him.
“Good. Good. And today, you will use that creative brain of yours to convince her they must ride with you,” said George.
“The children will remember me. I cannot do it,” was George just daft? She had held the children hostage. Even though she had not been cruel to them particularly, it did not change the fact that she had hurt them by keeping them away from those who loved them.
”Consider it your last great act on the planet,” returned George with no emotion. Irvette was not disappointed but she still felt hurt by his words. The man cared for nobody but himself. Even after stealing his brother's family, he has not grown to love them at all.
“You want me dead?” She pretended to be surprised.
“Do not worry yourself too much. I will ensure that Prince Harlin is taken care of. Ah! I will make him my crown prince in the new world,” he said with a smile that made Irvette want to spot on his face. The thought alone of George holding her baby made her want to puke. She reminded herself that she was doing this for her little prince if not anybody else. That alone in itself was noble.
“You say nothing? I will make Harlin crown prince and you are not moved by my generosity?” quipped George.
“You intend to achieve mortality. My son will be dead before he gets a chance. I just want Harlin to live his life the way he wants, can you at least promise me that?” There were hot tears on Irvette's face. If George had a sense of compassion, he would have been moved by her show of tears and sincere-sounding words but her entire act only made him scoff. He nodded yes because he still needed her but once he could decide the twins for himself it was game over.
“I will leave now. You had better come up with something and if you don't I assure you that you will never see Harlin again and it would not be because you are dead,” threatened George. Even though she had been assured that her child would be safe she could not help wondering.
