Chapter Two-Hundred-and-Fifty-Eight

**3rd Person POV**

There was no shadow telling her what to do; Nydia had embraced evil and loved to torture them.

When they had come to the safety of Queen Emily's palace, they had discussed what they would do. They decided that they would keep their distance from Queen Irvette. In fact, they wanted absolutely nothing to do with her and as they would later refer to Harlin and her stupid baby. They had concluded that Harlin was a product of the shadow. They believed that he was inherently evil.

When they had attended the party, they had done so with only one mind: they were going to channel all the hatred and bitterness within them into hating this baby.

But as the party progressed, the adults had left them alone and they were mighty bored. Seeing that the baby prince was not with his mother and no one seemed to be paying attention, they made their way to where he sat to give him a taste of the experience they had gone through.

But when Charlotte saw Harlin bouncing, the way babies do before they learn to stand up, she fell in love with his baby eyes. She had never in her entire life seen eyes so pure and innocent. She had experienced lots of evil in the past few years but those eyes…

“We can't hurt him, ever,” Reginald had said in a quiet voice beside her. She had reiterated the word “ever.”

And so from that moment onward, they had vowed to protect him from everything. They wanted him to continue bouncing happily, void of any worries. They soon realised however that they could not protect him from the world so they had been his first fighting teachers. They had taught him everything without holding back. There was nothing they knew that he did not know.

Except.

They had realised as they had looked at his innocent eyes that they could never tell him the truth about his mother or Nydia. They would protect his innocence that way forever.

In a way, Harlin became the younger sibling they had never had. Even when Harriet would later have children, they did not feel the same bond they felt with Harlin with Harriet's children.

And now, here was their baby brother bleeding to death before their very eyes.

Everyone watched as the vampire physician skillfully opened up Harlin and tried to dislodge the bullet from his heart.

The physician knew that this was the most important surgery he had ever done and it would determine if he would be alive tomorrow or dead.

King Armand held his breath as he watched his personal doctor try to get the bullet out before it could do more damage. King Armand knew the importance of the next few minutes. If Harlin ended up dead and could not tell them who had shot him, no one would believe that Gabriella had not done it and a war would be unavoidable.

When the physician finally managed to get the bullet out, a general sigh of relief took over the place. Gabriella who had stood through the entire thing and was already famished from her journey fainted in relief and from exhaustion. She was quickly carried into the palace.

On the instruction of the physician, Charlotte and Reginald were able to carry their cousin into the palace. They took him to the clinic and lay him gently on a bed.

Charlotte turned to look at the physician, “what now?”

“The bullet was lodged very deep and…”

“Will he make it?” Reginald cut the physician. Neither were interested in the doctor's story. All they wanted to know was if their baby brother was going to survive this.

“I’m sorry. We have to wait and see,” said the physician. Harlin had simply lost too much blood and he too was not a hundred per cent certain if the young werewolf could survive.

“Don't be. You'll be sorry if he doesn't wake up,” threatened Charlotte. The physician felt chills run down his spine. He prayed desperately in his heart that the werewolf survived.

While the surgery had been ongoing, the guards had spread throughout the garden to look for the shooter. It seemed hopeless however because whoever had held that gun was now nowhere to be found. At once, they realised that the shooter must have escaped through the web of ivies. As a result, search parties were sent out of the palace to ensure that the shooter had not gone far.

It did not take long to figure out that the shooter was either very smart that the person had left no trail or the shooter had to be Gabriella which they could not fathom was possible.

“I realise the tables have turned,” was how King Armand began the meeting with the Elders at the opposite end of the table.

Harlin was a very special prince. He was the product of royalty and the highest noble class as he was the only son of the later Beta, Harlin. There was also no one left to take the position of Harlin if he died so it was pertinent that the boy remained alive. Harlin was also, Queen Emily’s godson and despite the history with his mother and the twins, she was fiercely protective of the boy. He also happened to be best friends with Dagen's only children and Dagen had begun to see the young man as his own. Basically, Harlin was inseparable from the twins. Their relationship was special and obvious. Since they had found Harlin lying down in his own pool of blood in the middle of the garden, they had refused to leave his side.

In all, it was a very delicate situation.

“We do not know that yet, Gabriella is yet to tell us what actually happened,” Queen Agatha decided to remain stubborn until the very end.

She wanted to believe that Gabriella had been the one in grave danger.
