Chapter Forty

Dagen's POV

“I learnt about the man in Regina’s bed,” said Nydia to me when I had followed her to her room.

“So?” I questioned her.

“She should be killed at once. She is no longer useful,” she said matter-of-factly. I suspected that if I interrogated this case I might arrive at an answer that I would not like.

“I caught him before he could soil her body,” came my strained response.

“He saw her naked, that should be enough…”

“How do you know any of this?” I asked her. She hesitated for a minute before she said, “People talk and I know everything that goes on in this palace.”

“Perhaps, I have given you too much leeway,” came my response and I saw this statement disturbed her.

“What is happening to us, Dagen? We are fighting over irrelevant things. I am beginning to lose you,” she had tears in her eyes and that softened me; it always does. If Lord Edvin were here he would accuse his sister of being a fine manipulator.

“I cannot kill Regina yet, Nydia. I assure you that once she births my heir I will end her life but not before then,” came my response like an appeal. I needed her to understand this. I was worried about the curse consuming me before I had an heir. If something were to happen before then, the pack would fall into incapable hands and would plunge the pack into another era of war. I did not want that for my people.

“If she was naked with a man people will question the royal seed. Does that not worry you?” she asked me.

“There are ways to check if the child is mine and this is done publicly so the Luna is executed at once if she has deceived her Alpha. The same will happen to Regina if that is the case. She will meet an unfortunate end,” came my firm voice.

“I do not want to go to the garden palace. I want to remain here by your side like I always have,” said Nydia.

“You have nothing to worry about Nydia and I do need you there,” I said in a serious tone. Nothing was going to change my decision, not even if Nydia bawled her eyes out. I needed to get this business of having an heir over with pretty quickly and Nydia walking on eggshells around me being intimate with Regina was not helping in any way.

“Liar, you want Nydia out of the way so you can visit Regina more freely,” Kane said in my head.

“The man you caught in her bed. What did you do to him?” she asked me.

“He was executed at once,” cane my response. It was also very true. The moment I had walked in and saw him stripping Regina off her clothes, I had not waited to listen to any explanation he might have or even waited for his pleas of mercy. Instead, I had ripped his body apart with my hand. It had taken quite an effort to clean the room off the blood that had spilled everywhere.

I do not think I have been as angry as I had been at that moment. A blind rage had covered my eyes and clouded my emotions and I had simply acted on my rage.

“It was not your rage. It is your deep love for Gina,” Kane said and I told him to shut up.

Whatever feelings I had for Regina were because she was my mate and those feelings would disappear once I had rejected her and killed her off.

“Will you come to visit me in the garden palace?” asked Nydia.

“Of course. I will visit once things are more settled over here,” I assured her.

Gina's POV

“My lady, you are very distracted this morning. Perhaps, we should take a break?” suggested Madam Margaret when I had missed the standing posture for the hundredth time. I was relieved by her suggestion as I was exhausted and in fact, sweating down to my very chemise. She was also very right about being distracted. I was distracted at the moment because I could not shake off what had happened this morning. What if Lady Nydia had entered my room in the morning and had shouted for the world to know that I had…

“My lady, are you alright?” questioned Diane as she helped dab my face with a napkin to dry my sweat.

“I am. Perhaps this is all too much for my body seeing that I have just recovered,” came my response.

“Should I tell Madam Margaret that we should continue the session tomorrow? Your temperature has begun to climb and your skin is a lot paler,” observed Diane.

“It is quite alright. Madam Margaret might think that I am simply lazy,” came my reply. My mind went back to Lord Tyler. I wondered if there was a way to check that he was not the prowler from yesterday. After all, considering what had happened with my first mate I could not trust a man completely. It could be that he had meant evil to me all this while.

“What does it matter what she thinks? It will do nobody good if you were to fall sick again,” Diane said and I did begin to feel sick.

Soon Madam Margaret dismissed me for the day and Diane helped me to my room by which time I had developed chills.

“I will get the physician at once,” Diane said once she had helped me lay in bed. I wanted to argue with her but found that I was too weak to do so.

Minutes later, Alpha Dagen accompanied the physician to my room.

“What is it this time?” I heard Alpha Dagen ask. His voice sounded like he was worried but I summed that up to my wishful thinking.

“Her symptoms show a delayed reaction to a poisonous substance,” replied the physician after his examination.
