Chapter Hundred-and-Eighty-Eight

**3rd Person POV**

George tightened his hold on Irvette's neck until he felt her body go cold. If not for a former friend inside Queen Emily's palace, he would have walked straight into their trap. He touched Irvette's body to make sure she was dead before he tried to disappear. He found however that the power to do so had left him. He tried again and again but he only grew exhausted with his continued attempts. He spat in frustration at the fact that he was stuck. He opened the door of the moving carriage a little bit and found that the carriage was surrounded. He cursed under his breath. They had planned this. They had known he would be coming for Irvette's neck and so they had set a trap for him.

He turned his attention to Irvette's limp body and was surprised to see that she was still breathing. He could not believe that he was relieved that she was still alive. He pulled her up roughly and held the sharp end of his knife to her neck. He kicked the carriage door open and jumped onto the road. He had managed to secure his knife on Irvette's neck. It was a clear message to all the guards and soldiers that surrounded him. If they made a move to capture him, he would end their lives.

They seemed to understand but did not make a move to lower their weapons.

“Back off or I'll gut her,” he threatened.

“Do what you will to her, I don't care but you are coming with us whether dead or alive,” Queen Emily emerged from the host of armed men. Her tone was ruthless. It also happened that Irvette was roused to consciousness that very moment and she had heard Queen Emily clearly.

She was not surprised by the betrayal. It was clear to her that she had been the bait all along and now that the fish had bitten they did not care. She was hurt by the betrayal but she could not begrudge Emily or the Council of Elders. In all fairness, she should have seen this coming.

“Do you hear that my princess? They've dumped you. That is what you get from dining with traitors,” whispered George into Irvette's ear.

Irvette said nothing. If she had the opportunity to go back in time she would still have made the same decision.

Irvette looked up and managed to make eye contact with Emily. She only had one word in her mouth, “Harlin.”

The very next second George and Irvette had disappeared.

Irvette woke up in a dirt cell. She was tied up pretty well but she could feel the cold evening breeze. She could also smell a whiff of daisies in the air. The air smelled like home. She was somewhere in her pack. She tried to think of the possible places George could hide in the pack and decided there was only one such place. It was a remote village called Monrovia. It was the only place that Irvette had not yet begun demolition. It was the one place that had been designed to topple the alignment of the stars so that at George's choosing, he could suck the souls of the people who lived there. So far so good, Monrovia had not experienced any strange death and so it had not been a priority to tear down the village.

Irvette came to the sad realization that George had kept this place untouched just in case he needed it and now was the time. With the fiery red moon in only a few days time, he needed energy and the only way to get that was through sucking souls.

She was certain George was on a rampage of souls at the moment but she had to find a way to stop him. She tried to pull at her bounds again but she could not, she was stuck. George had done a good job of tying her up.

She stopped struggling with her bonds when she heard steady footsteps coming her way. She looked up to see George that George had brought a guest with him. She tried to get a good view of her guest but she could not see his face clearly from where she stood. One thing stood out about him though, it was his pale skin and jutting bluish-looking veins. She blinked her eyes to be sure her line of sight was not blurry; it was not. She was seeing right. There was a vampire in their midst whom George appeared to be overly friendly with. She knew that the Council of Elders had speculated that George might have solicited the help of a vampire but they had never been sure. This was proof that George was in bed with the vampires and there was no way she could warn them.

The two of them were saying something in a language she barely understood but she was able to make out that their troops had been stationed strategically underground and once the fiery red moon was in the sky they would turn the place red. When the vampire looked down, Irvette shut her eyes immediately and continued her pretence of sleep.

“What will you do to her?” the vampire asked.

“I was going to give her a quick death, you know. She's been so helpful so far but now? I'm going to make her watch as I slowly torture her son to death then I will give her the same treatment,” George ended his sentence with a laugh that sent shudders down Irvette's spine.

“Sounds like a good plan. Any luck securing her son?” quipped the vampire.

“The palace is still out of my reach but the fiery red moon will take care of that. My biggest concern now is Regina. I must secure her somehow,” George said, concern ringing in his voice.

“You must or none of this is worth it. I warned you, I said you should be patient with Napoleon,” said the vampire.
