Chapter Hundred-And-Ninety-Six

3rd Person POV

It was already getting dark. Nydia took in a deep breath as she looked about for where she would spend her first night as an exile. Her mind drifted back in time again.

She recalled that many days after her brother's confrontation, she had remained in her room waiting for Edvin to bring the authorities to arrest her and lock her behind bars. He had not done so instead he had knocked on her door one night and told her to get dressed for the ball that night. She had not answered him but had remained in her room staring at the ceiling. He had returned urging her to hurry.

“If you want to arrest me, just do it here. There's no need to drag me to the palace and cause a scene,” she said.

Edvin opened the door fully and entered the room.

“I am not turning you in. If you want to turn yourself in go ahead but I will not give you the luxury of forcing you to feel remorse for what you have done,” he said and walked away.

She had gone to the ball that night and Edvin had not had her arrested. He had not told his best friend, Dagen, about the poison either.

After the ball, she stayed behind to fool around with Dagen. They were in some sort of on-and-off relationship. She had been so busy trying to usurp her brother's position that she had not had time to commit to the relationship. Later that night in Dagen's bed, he shared a problem he was having at court with her. She had given him a working solution which he presented to court later. It was implemented and it yielded positive results. Dagen was extremely grateful to her afterwards and he would occasionally ask her opinion on matters of state.

She derived some sort of sick joy thinking that she was running the pack. It was then she conceived another idea. If she married Dagen and became his Luna, she would give birth to the crown prince. If that happened and Dagen happened to die pretty young, then she would become a regent ruler because her son would be too young to rule by himself. It sounded like a good plan although it was going to take a very long time.

She did not have to suggest marriage to Dagen. He brought it up himself but there was one problem. He was the Alpha of his pack and he could not just marry anyone. Besides, there was something about a curse that would affect his fertility. When Dagen was able to get a proper reading, it was revealed that he had to marry his fated mate because only she could give him children. They had not believed the curse so they had tried on their own to have children but failed.

So when Regina turned out to be Dagen's mate, Dagen had no choice but to marry her. He promised though to put her away after she'd had his heir. That way, he would marry Nydia and Regina's child would become her adopted child. She had not been pleased with the arrangement but she had no choice. However, she refused consent unless Dagen put Regina to death after having his baby and made it very clear that she was no more than a sex slave.

Unfortunately, Regina had turned out to be a threat to her. She had noticed that Dagen was beginning to fall in love with Regina even though he would not admit it. It did not help that Edvin was on Regina's side too.

Nydia found a small cave just a few miles away from the first vampire kingdom in her sight. She could see their border in the distance. She entered the cave and found that it was quite small. There was no one or nothing significant in sight. She could not rest easy however because she knew that once daylight was completely gone, the creatures of the night would prowl about looking for what to eat.

She thought about making a fire but that would only attract attention. If she was discovered, she would be killed. Nydia's plan was to find a way to make it to a human settlement. They were the only ones who would not kill her. They would if they knew she was a werewolf but she intended to hide that part of herself from them. Unfortunately, she would have to pass through various vampire settlements to get to a safe human settlement. But in order to do that, she would have to survive the night.

As she sat with her back against the wall on the cold hard floor of the cave, she reflected on the question Dagen asked her when she had recovered from her days in the underworld. He had asked her if she had ever loved him.

Love?

What was that?

How did people feel things like love?

Perhaps she had no love within her to feel such for anyone.

It had been so easy for her to tear up her son into pieces.

She concluded that she had not loved Dagen or anyone; she doubted she had ever loved her own brother but she knew that she had liked it very much when Dagen had loved her. She had enjoyed being at the centre of his world.
