Chapter 23
Lycan King Gideon’s POV
I paced the floor, I knew my best warriors were out there looking for the girl. Nick showed the most promise. The girl he mentioned had a certain smell almost faint, I wasn't sure if it was because she was among the humans too long, or if her father had something to do with it. I needed to find out which it was.
Heading to the island that Nathaniel was exiled to, I wasn't even sure he was alive, the last time anyone had seen him he wasn't too well off. Pity too he made a good warrior until he met his human mate, I hated her, and I hated him worse since he took something special from the Lycans.
“Nathaniel,” I called. “I know you’re around, I can smell you.”
“Gideon what do you want?” he growled coming out of the bushes.
“It’s King Gideon.” I snared.
“Not to me, remember you’re the one that forced me here, you’re the one that exiled me from the Lycans.” he spat.
“Yes, I did, because you betrayed us,” I said shifting myself. “Now I come to ask you about your daughter, did you mask her smell?”
“I don’t have to answer to you, now if you’re done wasting your own time, get the hell off my island!”
“You best watch that tongue of yours,” I growled. He was pushing me, he knew I could snap his neck, and yet here he was taunting me.
“Or what Gideon?” he snapped. “You’ll kill me, oh you won't. Your pride stops you, you know I saved your life so you won't bear the shame to take my life,” he said crossing his arms.
Yes so long ago he saved me from the vampires, I promised to protect him and honor him until my last breath. It was a Lycan way, and we cannot back down once we take that oath. He was lucky that promise was made otherwise he would have been killed before he could have denounced us.
“Come back to us Nathaniel, we need your help,” I said taking a relaxing stance hoping he would see that I was being serious about asking him back. “I will reinstate you, and you will gain your status back.”
“Who says I want it?” he snapped at me. “I’ve had eighteen years to think about ways to kill you to escape this forsaken place, but each of my plans seems to fall short of the snap of your neck.”
“Because whether you like it or not, you are bound by the code too,” I smirked knowing he was going to go crazy at that.
“Code, I don’t live by that code anymore, in fact, if you would allow me to leave I could find my daughter and live in peace.”
“Fine if that is what you want.” I mused. “You are free to go, last place she was in New York.”
“How do you know?”
“I have my sources, but be warned that place has lots of vampires,” I said before walking away from him.
One of the guards that followed me, “watch him close, I have a feeling he will find her before Nick is certain the girl is who we are looking for.” I said before leaving Nathaniel standing there.
“You think he is going to help us find the girl?” one of my right-hand men asked.’
“That’s the plan, I figured better use him before he gets himself killed. He hasn't fought in a long time, so I am sure he isn't going to survive that long.” I smirked it didn’t matter if he lived or die as long as his daughter takes her rightful place next to me.
“Sir a distress beacon in New York has been set off.” one of my warriors said as he bowed his head.
“Nick?”
“Looks like it, either he found her and he hurt or she is.”
“Don't.” I snapped. “Let me call him and find out what he has to say for himself. If things are bad that he has to set off the beacon, then we need to bring us there.” I said walking to my chambers, an untraceable phone on my night table.
I grabbed the phone and dialed the distress beacon's phone number. Once he picked up, I wasn’t happy. “So you failed?”
“No, but I feel we can use more people helping here,” Nick said. “The vampires have her, but I don’t think they are going to hurt her yet.”
“No of course not, they are going to try and bring her to me and ask for the war to end,” I growled into the phone. “How the heck did they figure out what she was?”
“I don’t know, it could be something to do with the werewolf that claims she’s his mate.”
A werewolf claiming her as a mate, not this couldn’t be good. There was something more to this, and I needed to find out. I couldn’t take a chance and put myself out there, no I would have to send someone that I cared less about. Hell all the Lycans could die as long as I get her in the end. We would start a new race of Lycans stronger, more obedient.
“Find out what you can about this werewolf, I don’t like that she is mated to him. I don’t believe it to be true.” I said wanting to fly to New York myself and deal, but I had to remind myself for the second time I cannot do that. I fall our race falls.
“Anything else? Are you going to send some help?”
“I might, I will have to see if I can spare some men. Oh her father Nathaniel is coming so watch out for him, he might try and do something.”
“Will do, I will call you if something changes.”
“You do that,” I said before hanging up the phone.
Once he finds out more information on this werewolf, maybe I can force him to reject her. I hated dealing with the werewolves, they were nothing but a bunch of jerks that are overly powerful but couldn’t match my strength.
“Sir did you want me to get some men together so we can head to New York?” one of my warriors named Darrin asked.
“No, not yet, I want to see what Nick does and if he can bring her out of their hold.”
“Alright Sir, I’m going to go back to patrols, I guess there have been some vampires in the area.”
“I’m guessing it’s the one that has my girl,” I said walking over to the window. “But either way prepare for them, I do expect they are going to want to fight.”
“Yes Sir,” he said before leaving me.
I paced around the room for a while, I was getting impatient but I wasn't entirely sure it was the vampires that were coming to see me. I hoped it was them, but they would have to come here prepared to die since I wasn't going to give them what they wanted. They all deserved to die, and I was going to make sure it happened. If only it would happen faster.
“Sir!” Darrin came into my office.
“What?” I snapped.
“They are about a mile out, I think we should take you somewhere safe, there are quite a few of them, and I don’t know what they have planned.”
“They wouldn't dare come here to try and kill me, they’ve all done it in the past, and have died from it,” I said rolling my eyes. “Why don’t we go to the security room so I can see myself, I don’t think they have the girl do they?”
“I’m not sure, but I can find that out for you if you want?” he said moving out of my way.
I didn’t need him to find out anything, they would come here, and if they came through empty-handed it would just be another blood bag dead and another one for me. I smiled at the thought of draining their life from their bodies. It has been a while since I had any vampire flesh, and my Lycan was dying to have some.
Walking with Darrin to the security room, I have expected to see something on the cameras but there was nothing but snow on them.
“But I thought you said we had vampires coming?” I said without looking at him.
“They were just there!” Darrin said scanning all the cameras.
“Maybe you are mistaking, and I don’t like mistakes and you know that.” I snapped. I was getting impatient and this was beginning to piss me off. I wanted to rip his head off because of this.
“Wait!” Darrin snapped. “There,” he said pointing at one of the monitors.
I watched the figures walking through the snow, I didn’t see a girl with them, so maybe she wasn't with them.
“Send some warriors out there to arrest them,” I growled before leaving Darrin standing there. I had to prepare just in case.
