Chapter 113 Feeling Nauseous

Before Rachel could get a word in, Catherine grabbed her hand and said coldly, "I invited Rachel here. Got a problem with that?"

Emily was caught off guard for a moment, then forced a smile. "Mom, with you saying that, how could I dare have a problem? It's just that she's not family, and it feels a bit off having her here, don't you think?"

Catherine snorted, "Of course not. Even though Rachel is divorced, she is still my family."

Rachel looked at Catherine, her eyes welling up. "Grandma Catherine!"

Mandy, standing nearby, lowered her head to hide her twisted expression. She knew Catherine wasn't happy with her.

"Alright, alright, whatever you say." Emily smiled apologetically but shot a glare at Rachel. She couldn't figure out why Catherine was so fond of Rachel. Rachel had left the Smith family, yet Catherine still had her back.

Rachel glanced at her watch and suggested leaving. "Grandma Catherine, it's getting late. I should head out." She had wanted to spend more time with Catherine, but with Emily and Mandy around, she lost interest.

Catherine, however, held Rachel's hand tightly. "Stay a bit longer. I have something for you." Rachel was curious but didn't ask what it was.

Mandy pressed her lips together, filled with jealousy. She had been visiting frequently and trying her best to please Catherine, but Catherine remained indifferent to her. Yet Rachel showed up and immediately received a gift. She felt indignant.

Emily was equally displeased, narrowing her eyes. "Mom, if you have something good, why not give it to us, instead of an outsider?" she complained.

Catherine's face showed anger. "Shameless. All you see is profit. You've been in the Smith family for over a decade and still haven't changed. Besides, I can give my things to whoever I want. It's not for you to question, especially since it rightfully belongs to Rachel."

Rachel raised an eyebrow. She thought, 'Isn't Emily Michael's mother? Michael is already thirty, so how could Emily have only married into the Smith family for just over a decade?'

Despite Catherine's scolding, Emily didn't get angry. She pouted, "Who knows if it's true? Maybe you're just saying that on purpose."

Catherine was so angry she started coughing, her face turning red. "Grandma Catherine!" Seeing this, Rachel couldn't be bothered to argue with Emily. She quickly stepped forward to gently pat Catherine's back, helping her catch her breath.

Emily stood frozen, her eyes wide with fear. She said with a trembling voice, "I didn't mean to." She had no idea Catherine was so frail and sickly. She glanced around the room, her heart pounding, and silently prayed Catherine would be okay; otherwise, she'd be in big trouble.

It seemed like God heard her prayers because Catherine's breathing gradually stabilized with Rachel's soothing.

Rachel relaxed, and so did Emily. Only Mandy looked slightly disappointed. She had actually hoped Catherine would have an episode. That way, the opposition to her marrying Michael from the Smith family would be gone.

"Mom, try the tonic I made for you," Emily quickly changed the subject, trying to divert attention from what had just happened.

Catherine, knowing her well, snorted and ignored her. Emily placed the thermos on the bedside table. As soon as she opened the lid, a rich aroma filled the room.

For some reason, the smell made Rachel feel nauseous, her stomach churning. She covered her mouth with her hand, retching lightly, her face pale.

Seeing this, Mandy first frowned, then seemed to realize something, her eyes widening as she stared incredulously at Rachel's abdomen.

"Rachel, are you okay? Are you feeling unwell?" Catherine asked with concern.

Rachel took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to vomit, and forced a smile. "Don't worry, Grandma Catherine, I'm fine."

Catherine said worriedly, "But you don't look well. Are you feeling unwell?"

"Maybe I caught a chill while driving. It's nothing serious," Rachel replied.

Catherine frowned with displeasure. "Catching a chill can lead to a cold. You should see a doctor."

Before Rachel could respond, Mandy instinctively shouted, "No!"

Everyone's eyes focused on her. A trace of panic flashed across her face. Realizing her overreaction had aroused suspicion, she quickly lowered her head and explained, "Sorry, Mrs. Catherine Smith, there was a mosquito about to bite me, and I was trying to swat it away."

Emily looked up and asked in confusion, "Mosquito? Where's the mosquito?"

Mandy's expression stiffened, cursing inwardly, 'Emily, are you here to ruin my plans?'

Catherine, seeing that Emily couldn't even hold a bowl steadily, felt a sense of disdain. She cautioned, "Stop moving around. The tonic is about to spill."

Rachel glanced at Mandy suspiciously and lowered her head in thought. She wondered, 'Was Mandy really repelling mosquitoes, or stopping me from seeing a doctor?'

Thinking of this, Rachel decided to test her. She smiled at Catherine. "Grandma Catherine, there's no need to see a doctor. I have cold medicine at home. I'll just take a pill when I get back."

Mandy let out a big sigh of relief. Great, she had planned to sneak out and find a doctor to negotiate privately if Rachel agreed to see one. But now it seemed unnecessary.

Rachel caught Mandy's relaxed expression out of the corner of her eye and narrowed her eyes slightly. She thought, 'As expected, Mandy was indeed trying to stop me from seeing a doctor. But why? Is there some secret?'
