Chapter 150
Michael hesitated to pick up the phone since Catherine and Rachel were around. He shot a quick glance at Rachel.
Rachel noticed and thought, 'Why's he looking at me?' She turned her head away.
Seeing her cold reaction, Michael got a bit annoyed and answered the call with a huff, "Mandy." He then walked out to the balcony with his phone.
Catherine's face soured. She muttered, "It's that Mandy again."
Rachel chuckled. "Miss Brown is Mr. Smith's fiancée; it's normal for her to call, right?"
"Only Michael, that idiot, can't see Mandy's true colors," Catherine said, pouting.
Catherine knew Michael didn't really love Mandy. But she couldn't understand why he was so hung up on Mandy, thinking it was love, and couldn't see that the one he truly loved was Rachel. That was why she called him a fool.
"Mr. Smith's always known her true nature; he just doesn't care," Rachel said, brushing her hair back.
Catherine snorted, "Forget it, let's not talk about Mandy. Let's talk about you, Rachel."
"Me?" Rachel pointed at herself.
Catherine nodded with a smile. "Yeah, Rachel, be honest, do you still have feelings for Michael?"
If Rachel did, Catherine would do whatever it took to get rid of Mandy and bring Rachel and Michael back together. She needed Michael to realize that Rachel was the one he loved.
Rachel shook her head with a smile. "Catherine, I don't have feelings for Mr. Smith anymore."
Catherine's face fell, clearly not buying it. "Really?"
"Really!" Rachel nodded firmly.
Seeing the seriousness in her eyes, Catherine sighed in disappointment. "Then forget it."
Rachel hesitated. "Sorry, Catherine, I..."
Catherine smiled again. "No need to apologize. After how Michael treated you, it's normal you don't love him anymore. I just didn't expect it to happen so fast."
Rachel lowered her eyes. "I was deeply hurt by this relationship."
"Yeah," Catherine sighed.
Outside on the balcony, Michael slowly lowered his hand that was about to push the door. He hung his head, making it hard to see his expression.
He had heard Rachel say she didn't love him before, but he never took it seriously, thinking she was just mad about his defense of Mandy. After all, he knew how Rachel felt about him over the years.
But now, hearing her calmly tell Catherine she didn't love him anymore made him realize she wasn't just angry before; she really didn't love him anymore.
At that moment, Michael felt a sharp pain in his heart, like something important had been taken away, making his face look grim.
Catherine noticed his state out of the corner of her eye and sighed, shaking her head slightly. "I thought if you still had feelings for Michael, I'd do whatever it took to bring you two together, but now... Maybe this is for the best."
In the past, it was Michael who didn't love Rachel, making their relationship so cold. Now, it was Rachel who didn't love Michael. If they got back together, what difference would it make?
"Thanks, Catherine, for your concern. But there's no chance between Mr. Smith and me," Rachel said, holding Catherine's hand. "I'm sorry to disappoint you, Catherine."
"Don't say that. I'd rather see you happy than force you to be with Michael. You seem so lively now, unlike before when you looked so worn out. You're much better off now," Catherine laughed softly.
Seeing that Catherine truly didn't mind, Rachel felt relieved and laughed along with her. Then, she thought of something and pulled a necklace out from her collar. "By the way, Catherine, I went back to the Williams Manor and found a necklace. Is this the one you mentioned?"
Outside on the balcony, Michael's eyes narrowed upon hearing this. What necklace?
Catherine lifted Rachel's necklace to take a look. "I'm not sure if this is the one. Your father didn't describe what the necklace looked like, so I can't be certain."
Rachel put the necklace down. "This is the only necklace in the Williams Manor."
"Then it should be this one." Catherine nodded.
Rachel bit her lip. "This necklace looks a lot like the one Charlotte wears. I asked about it, and it's a mother-daughter set. Charlotte's is the mother version, and mine is the daughter version. So I can't understand why Mandy's necklace would be in my house."
"Are you saying this is the Brown family's necklace?" Catherine was taken aback.
Rachel nodded. "Yes, it was designed by someone Ethan hired over twenty years ago and given to Charlotte and her newborn daughter, Mandy."
"I remember now." Catherine smiled. "If it's truly the Brown family's mother-daughter necklace, then the one you have isn't Mandy's, but Grace's."
"Grace?" Rachel tilted her head in confusion. For some reason, hearing that name stirred an indescribable feeling in her heart. But soon, that feeling disappeared.
"Yes, Grace was Ethan and his wife's eldest daughter. Mandy is their younger daughter. By the way, you and Grace were born in the same year," Catherine recalled. "When Charlotte gave birth to their eldest daughter, Ethan bought two necklaces, which was quite famous in the Summit Ridge District. Many people envied Charlotte. But when Mandy was born, Ethan didn't do anything special."
Rachel looked down at the necklace around her neck. "So the Brown family has more than just Mandy as a daughter. But why have I never heard of the Brown family having an eldest daughter?"
"That's because she died when she was very young," Michael said as he pushed the door open and walked in.
Rachel's eyes widened in surprise. "Died?"
Catherine nodded. "Yes."
"Then why is this necklace in my house?" Rachel was confused.
Michael walked over and looked at her. "Do you want to know?"
"You know?" Rachel met his gaze.
Michael said firmly, "When I found out Mandy had an older sister, I did some research on Grace. I found out her death is related to your father."
"My father?" Rachel stood up in shock.
Catherine shook her head. "These are the grudges of the previous generation."
Rachel's lips trembled. "Could it be that the events between the Brown family and the Williams family years ago are related to Grace's death?"
"What do you mean?" Michael looked at her.
Rachel ignored him and tightly grasped Catherine's hand. "Catherine, besides visiting you, I came here to find out if something happened between the Brown family and the Williams family years ago. Otherwise, this necklace wouldn't have appeared in the Williams family."
It was based on this point that she speculated something might have happened between the two families.
"Catherine, from what you just said, you seem to know that. Please, I beg you to tell me what happened between the Brown family and the Williams family back then, why Grace's death is related to my father, and if the secret behind the necklace my father mentioned is also related to this?" Rachel looked at Catherine with pleading eyes.
