Chapter 148

"It's this necklace," Charlotte said, then recounted what happened at the DT store.

Mandy listened, her fists slowly clenching. It seemed like the woman could really be Grace. She couldn't believe Grace's incredible luck to have survived such an ordeal.

"Mom, I'm heading to the Smith Mansion for dinner tonight, so I'm leaving now," Mandy said, lowering her eyelids and pulling her hand away. She had to find Grace first; otherwise, it would be too late once her parents found out.

Charlotte nodded. "Go ahead." Mandy kissed her on the cheek and walked towards the door.

After Mandy left, Charlotte looked at Ethan. "Darling, let's hurry and find Grace. I don't know how she's been these past twenty years. Just thinking about the possibility that Grace might have suffered a lot makes my heart ache." She pounded her chest.

Ethan tenderly embraced her, whispering, "Rest assured, I will find our daughter and bring her back to us."

"But I'm worried that Grace won't want to come back. What if she thinks we abandoned her and hates us?" Charlotte said, both hopeful and fearful.

"She won't. Since Grace took the necklace to ask, it means she definitely wants to find us too," Ethan replied.

Charlotte shook her head. "According to the store manager, Grace already knows that you had someone design the necklace. So she should know we are her parents. I'm just worried she won't come to find us on her own."

Ethan sighed deeply. "Let's wait a few days. Perhaps Grace will come to us on her own. If she doesn't, we'll look for her. We can use your necklace—post a picture of it online. When Grace sees it, she'll understand that we haven't abandoned her, and maybe she'll come to us then."

"You're right." Charlotte nodded.

Rachel didn't know that her inquiry about the necklace had already caught the attention of the Brown family.

After leaving the mall, she drove to the hospital to visit Catherine and ask if she knew anything about what happened between the Williams family and the Brown family over twenty years ago.

Unexpectedly, the car stalled halfway, and the tow truck she called for was delayed. Rachel ended up squatting by the roadside, freezing and waiting for nearly two hours.

"Mr. Smith, I see Ms. Williams," David said in surprise from the black Maybach as he spotted Rachel by the roadside ahead.

In the back seat, Michael, exuding an air of nobility, opened his eyes and looked out the window. Then he also saw Rachel by the roadside. His brows furrowed.

Michael thought, 'What is she doing? Since she is rubbing her arms from the cold, why is she still squatting there?'

"Turn the car around," Michael ordered.

David responded and drove to the roundabout ahead, turning the car around and heading towards Rachel.

When they reached Rachel, David stopped the car, rolled down the window, and said to Rachel, "Ms. Williams, get in the car."

Rachel was surprised to see David and even more surprised when he asked her to get in the car.

She looked at the back seat window, which was tinted, so she couldn't see if anyone was inside. She didn't immediately agree and asked, "Do you have the authority to say that?"

"Mr. Smith asked me to invite you," David had to answer.

Rachel turned indifferent. "No need, thank you."

In the back seat of the Maybach, Michael's face darkened upon hearing her refusal. He rolled down the window and commanded, "Get in the car!"

Rachel calmly met his gaze. "I said no, Mr. Smith. Don't you understand?" What was wrong with Michael? It was perfectly normal for her to refuse to get in his car. After all, she wasn't anyone to him. Why was he angry? It was really baffling.

Michael sensed her impatience, his brows tightening. He wanted to tell David to drive away since she wouldn't get in the car. But seeing her face red from the cold, he held back.

"What are you doing here?" Michael asked in a deep voice.

Rachel could tell he wanted to leave but didn't know why he hadn't. She didn't bother guessing his thoughts and replied indifferently, "Waiting for a tow truck."

David glanced ahead. "Mr. Smith, it looks like Ms. Williams' car broke down."

Michael raised an eyebrow; no wonder she was squatting by the roadside.

Michael said, "A severe accident has occurred one mile away on the main road. The debris hasn't been cleared yet, and the tow truck won't arrive anytime soon. You either get in the car or stay here until nightfall."

Rachel frowned. There was an accident? No wonder it was taking so long.

"Sorry, Mr. Smith, but I can't leave. If I leave the car here, the consequences will be even worse," Rachel said, pursing her lips. If caught, her license could be revoked.

Hearing this, Michael gave David a look. David smiled wryly and immediately understood. "Ms. Williams, please get in the car. I'll stay and handle it for you."

"You?" Rachel eyed him skeptically.

David nodded. "Yes, I noticed you've checked your watch two or three times. You must have something urgent."

Rachel opened her mouth but didn't say anything. When her car was still working, she had called Catherine to say she was coming to visit and Catherine was very happy. If she ended up not going, Catherine would be disappointed.

Seeing Rachel's hesitation, David continued, "So, Ms. Williams, you should get in the car. Don't be late."

Rachel took a deep breath, meeting Michael's deep eyes, and said softly, "Thank you, Mr. Smith."

Michael responded and rolled up the window. Rachel then looked at David. "Wait a moment; I have some things in my car."

"Okay." David nodded with a smile.

Rachel walked to her car, took out the gifts she bought for Catherine, and handed the car keys to David.

After David took the keys, she turned and walked towards Michael's Maybach, intending to open the front passenger door.

As soon as she opened it, she saw Michael had moved to the driver's seat. Rachel immediately gave up on sitting in the front, closed the door expressionlessly, and went to open the back door.

Michael frowned as he watched the front door close. Was she avoiding him? She didn't want to sit next to him?

"Alright, Mr. Smith, let's go," Rachel said calmly, placing the gifts beside her.

Michael almost laughed in anger as she was treating him like a driver. Michael looked at Rachel's profile through the rearview mirror, asking, "Where to?"

Without turning her head, Rachel replied, "The subway station ahead."

Michael's face darkened. Rachel would rather take the subway than ride with him to her destination. Michael lowered his eyelids, hiding his irritation, and started the car.

As Rachel watched the scenery outside the window, she was lost in thought. It wasn't until she saw the subway station pass by that she turned her head, grabbed the back of the front seat, and said angrily, "Mr. Smith, you have passed it!"

"I know," Michael replied coldly, staring straight ahead.

Rachel bit her lip and questioned, "You did it on purpose?"
