Chapter 120 Do You Suspect the Child Might Be Yours?
Ethan shot her a dark look. Rachel just shrugged and said, "What I meant was, if it were fake, then that would be the result. But since your daughter is actually sick, that doesn't apply, so there's no need to get so upset."
Charlotte was left speechless. Ethan patted her hand and glared at Rachel. "You're still as sharp-tongued as ever."
Rachel grinned. "Thanks for the compliment, Mr. Brown."
Ethan snorted and turned away. Rachel turned her gaze to Mandy. "Miss Brown, you must be thrilled that my recording is gone, right?"
Mandy blinked, then suddenly seemed to realize something and exclaimed, "Ms. Williams, you don't think I did it, do you?"
"Only the three of us knew about the recording. I've already asked Michael, and he denied it, so the only person who could have done it is you," Rachel said coldly, eyeing her.
Mandy quickly waved her hands. "It wasn't me! I've already said, I'm willing to go to jail for my actions, so why would I snatch your recording?"
"Snatch?" Rachel raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips. "Miss Brown, isn't that a confession? When did I ever say the recording was snatched?"
Mandy's face turned pale as she realized her slip-up. "I..." She fidgeted nervously, unable to form a coherent sentence.
Rachel's eyes were full of disdain. "Such big talk. If you really didn't want to go to jail, you could have just said so. I might have respected you a bit more. Truly hypocritical."
With a cold glance at Mandy, Rachel turned and left. Mandy lowered her head, not daring to respond.
Charlotte noticed Ethan still looking in Rachel's direction and frowned. "Ethan, what are you looking at?"
Ethan said thoughtfully, "I just think Rachel's profile looks a bit like my mom." He had thought her smile reminded him of his mother, Elsie Adams, during the meeting, and now even her profile did, which surprised him.
Charlotte's eyes widened as she remembered something. She muttered, "Ethan, you're right. When I returned from Unity Republic and saw Rachel at the airport, I thought her profile looked very familiar. It really does resemble Mom."
"Dad, Mom, are you talking about Grandma?" Mandy suddenly asked.
Charlotte nodded. "Yes."
Mandy pouted and lowered her head. "I don't like Grandma."
Charlotte sighed. "Let's not talk about this. She has passed away."
"But I really don't understand why Grandma didn't like me. Wasn't I her only granddaughter?" Mandy asked, looking at Ethan and Charlotte with teary eyes. The two exchanged a glance and didn't respond, both feeling a mix of emotions.
Outside the interrogation room, Rachel was talking to a police officer. The officer explained, "Ms. Williams, you claimed that Miss Brown deliberately pushed you down the stairs with the intention to kill. However, there were no cameras present, which makes it difficult to gather evidence. Additionally, the evidence you provided is no longer available, so we cannot take any action against Miss Brown at this time."
Rachel had anticipated this outcome and wasn't angry, just reluctantly nodded. "I understand."
"We will do our best to find your bag," the officer reassured.
"Thank you, I appreciate it," Rachel said gratefully. After signing some documents, Rachel left the police station.
Outside the station, Michael was leaning against a car, holding a cigarette. Rachel was startled; it was the first time she had seen him smoke.
Michael noticed her too, extinguished the cigarette, and looked at her face seriously. Seeing that she looked better than before, he relaxed his brows and asked, "Are you okay now?"
Rachel pretended not to hear and walked straight to her car. Michael frowned, sensing that she disliked him even more.
Rachel drove away. Michael stood there thinking for a while when footsteps approached from behind. "Michael!" Mandy called out excitedly.
Michael turned around to see her running toward him. Mandy's smile froze when she saw the injuries on his face, and she asked worriedly, "Michael, what happened? Who hit you?"
"Michael, how did you get hurt?" Charlotte and Ethan also asked with concern.
Michael gently moved her hand away and casually replied, "It's nothing, I just fell."
Mandy pouted, "You're lying, it's obvious you were beaten."
Michael squeezed her hand and changed the subject. "It's over now, let's get in the car." Seeing that he didn't want to say more, Mandy obediently got into the car.
On the way, Michael glanced at her and asked, "Mandy, did you have someone take Rachel's bag?"
Mandy first nodded and then shook her head. "Maybe, but I don't really remember. It must have been my other personality. She probably didn't want to go to jail. I'm sorry, Michael."
"It's okay, it's not your fault, don't blame yourself," Michael gently comforted her.
Mandy sobbed. "But what about Ms. Williams?"
"Just return the bag to her. Even if the recording is recovered, I'll protect you from going to jail," Michael said as he turned the steering wheel.
Mandy looked down in distress. She muttered, "But I don't know who that person is, and there's no contact information on my phone. How can I return the bag to her?"
Michael was silent. He rubbed his temple with one hand and sighed. "Forget it." Not knowing who had snatched it, he couldn't just force her to give up the bag.
"I'm sorry, Michael, I messed up again." Mandy bit her lower lip, her eyes welling up with tears.
Seeing her like this, Michael gently reassured her, "It's not your fault, Mandy. Don't beat yourself up."
"Yeah, Mandy, listen to Michael," Ethan chimed in.
Charlotte nodded in agreement. "He's right."
Seeing everyone comforting her, Mandy finally managed a smile through her tears. "I get it now."
"Michael, how do you plan to resolve Mandy's case?" Ethan asked, looking at Michael.
Michael lowered his eyes and replied briefly, "You'll know tomorrow."
Seeing that he didn't want to talk more, Ethan, though somewhat dissatisfied, didn't press further.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the Brown Mansion. Ethan and the others got out of the car.
Michael rolled down the window and said, "Please take good care of Mandy."
"Don't worry," Charlotte said, patting Mandy's head with a smile. Though Ethan didn't speak, his eyes said the same thing as Charlotte's. Michael looked at Mandy and said, "Rest well at home, I'll pick you up on the weekend."
"Okay, drive safely." Mandy nodded.
Michael responded and drove away. Shortly after returning to Smith Corporation, David walked in with a document. "Mr. Smith."
"What is it?" Michael asked, staring at the screen.
David took a deep breath. "You asked me to inquire about Ms. Williams' health at the hospital, and I found out."
Michael stopped his work and looked up at him. "What's the result?"
"She's pregnant," David replied with a strange expression.
Michael was stunned, his eyes widening. "What did you say? She's pregnant?"
"Yes, a little over a month," David nodded. Rachel and Michael had been divorced for just over a month. 'Does this mean she got pregnant with someone else's child right after the divorce?' he thought.
Michael's lowered eyelids hid a storm of emotions. The time since they had sex that night to now was about a month. Could this child possibly be his?
His heartbeat quickened, and the hand on the mouse clenched into a fist, his mind in turmoil. David noticed and wasn't surprised. He knew Michael still couldn't let go of Rachel.
Michael looked at David and asked, "Is there any way to find out who the father of Rachel's baby is in advance?"
"Amniocentesis," David replied, but then added, "But it carries a high risk of causing a miscarriage."
Michael frowned and said nothing. David guessed his thoughts and asked, "Mr. Smith, do you suspect the child might be yours?"
Michael nodded slightly, admitting it. David's mouth twitched. Michael pressed on, "Besides amniocentesis, is there any other way?"
David shook his head. "We'll have to wait until the baby is born."
Michael pressed his lips together, silent and gloomy. David tentatively asked, "What if the child isn't yours? What if it's Mr. Davis's?"
Hearing this, Michael's face immediately darkened. The thought of the child possibly being someone else's made him very uncomfortable.
"Have someone keep an eye on Rachel and try to find out as much as possible," Michael ordered.
"Understood," David agreed and left.
Michael propped his head on his hand, closed his eyes, and his mind was filled with thoughts of Rachel being pregnant.
