Chapter 128 Rachel's Cooking Is Amazing
"Stop yelling, the chef's not here," Ella said, stepping out of the kitchen.
Joseph looked confused and asked, "Where'd the chef go?"
"He went out to get ingredients this afternoon and hasn't come back. I just called him, and he said he's stuck because of a landslide," Ella explained with a shrug.
James blinked. "So, what are we eating tonight?"
"Figure it out yourselves. The kitchen's stocked," Ella said, pointing towards the kitchen.
James' eyes widened. "You want us to cook?"
"What else?" Ella rolled her eyes.
Joseph's mouth twitched. "Can any of you cook?"
Silence fell over the group. After a moment, everyone except Rachel shook their heads. They all came from wealthy families and had never really cooked.
"We're doomed. We're gonna starve tonight." Joseph sighed, touching his stomach with a bitter smile.
Ella glared at him and grumbled, "It's your fault for bringing me here. Now I have no food."
Joseph pouted. "Who knew the chef would get stuck in a landslide?"
"Yeah." Ella sighed.
Mandy tugged on Michael's sleeve. "Michael, what should we do? I'm hungry."
Michael's thin lips parted slightly. "Go see if there are any snacks."
"That's all we can do." Mandy nodded, and they headed to the kitchen.
James didn't want to go with Mandy, so he stayed put. Soon, Mandy and Michael came back empty-handed.
John mocked, "Weren't you getting snacks? Where are they?"
Michael looked at him coldly and didn't respond. Mandy said softly, "We couldn't find anything in the kitchen."
"Shit, not even snacks. We're really gonna starve," Joseph cursed dejectedly.
John turned to Rachel. "Rachel, are you hungry?"
Hearing this, Michael also looked at Rachel, concern flickering in his eyes. Mandy noticed and clenched her hands tightly.
"A little. What about you?" Rachel nodded.
John rubbed his stomach and muttered, "I'm hungry too."
"I'll try to cook something," Rachel volunteered. Everyone except James and Michael looked surprised.
"Can you cook, Rachel?" John asked, eyes wide.
Before Rachel could answer, James jumped in excitedly. "Rachel's cooking is amazing!"
"You've had her cooking?" John glared at him, displeased.
James smirked. "Of course, for six whole years, and it seems you've never tasted Rachel's cooking."
John's mood soured, his face showing clear displeasure. He held back, took Rachel's hand gently, and said, "No wonder your hands are so rough from all the chores. You've been through a lot, Rachel."
"It's all in the past" Rachel smiled faintly, pulling her hand away.
"I don't think it's in the past!" John said coldly, glaring at James and Michael. "You're the Williams family's treasure, and after marrying into the Smith family, you suddenly mastered all these chores? They treated you like a maid!"
"Yeah, I can't believe some people still treat their wives like servants," Ella mocked. She then turned to Mandy. "Did you hear that? If you really marry into the Smith family, you won't have a good life either."
Mandy bit her lip and forced a smile. "Mrs. Smith is very nice. I believe they'll treat me well."
"Don't be too optimistic. Who knows what the future holds," Joseph added.
Michael listened to their accusations silently, his face growing darker but unable to refute them because their words weren't entirely false. Emily indeed didn't respect Rachel, and he hadn't helped Rachel.
James lowered his head in shame, his face red. He just wanted to show off but ended up revealing the Smith family's scandal. "Sorry, Rachel," he murmured. Despite his numerous previous apologies, adding one more couldn't hurt.
"It's okay." Rachel just shook her head lightly. "I'll cook."
"Rachel, can I pick a dish?" James asked hopefully.
Rachel raised an eyebrow. "No."
"See, she refused!" John clapped and laughed.
"Why not?" James looked innocent. "Aren't you cooking for me?"
"Because your brother and his fiancée are here too. You should go eat with them," Rachel responded calmly and walked toward the kitchen.
John smiled smugly and followed her. Others volunteered to help. "Ms. Williams, I can help," Ella said loudly. "I can help too, I took you to the hospital last time!" Joseph shouted, not wanting to be left out.
"Alright, come on then," Rachel agreed with a smile.
The three in the living room occasionally heard laughter from the kitchen. Rachel's laughter caused Michael a lot of pain. He sat on the edge of the sofa, his thin lips pressed tightly, feeling a storm of emotions inside.
Soon, the kitchen was filled with delicious aromas. Smelling it made James even hungrier. At that moment, Mandy suddenly suggested, "Michael, what if we head to the kitchen and cook something?"
