Chapter 164
Michael paused for a second and then said, "Figure out why the Brown family is after the girl with this necklace." He was sure the Browns were looking for Rachel, but they just didn't know it yet.
"Got it," David agreed with a nod.
Michael hesitated a bit before pulling out his phone to make a call.
Over at Skyline Corporation, Rachel was deep into a complicated document. Her phone rang, breaking her concentration. Without checking the caller ID, she answered, "Who is this?"
Michael didn't respond right away, thrown off by her impatient tone.
"If you don't talk, I'm hanging up," Rachel said, rubbing her temples.
"It's me, Michael," he finally said.
Rachel was a bit surprised. She glanced at her phone screen to confirm and then put it back to her ear. "Mr. Smith, what do you need?" she asked coolly.
"Did you see the notice from TriStar Corporation?" Michael cut to the chase.
"What notice?" Rachel was puzzled.
Michael felt a bit relieved, thinking he was the first to tell her. He cleared his throat and said, "The Brown family is looking for the person with the daughter's necklace from the mother-daughter set. That's you."
"What? They're looking for me?" Rachel gripped her pen tighter.
Michael nodded. "Yeah, but they don't know it's your necklace."
"Hold on, let me check something." Rachel quickly opened her computer and started searching. Seconds later, the info popped up. "Weird, how did the Brown family know about this necklace?" she asked, frowning.
They were both stumped. No one should have known the necklace was still around, but clearly, someone did.
"Maybe they found out by chance, right around the time you got the necklace," Michael guessed.
Rachel nodded. "But if they just found out the necklace exists, why look for a woman specifically? Do they think Grace is still alive?"
Michael's expression changed. "You might be right. They could think Grace is still alive."
The Browns knew about the necklace but not who had it, only that it was a woman. So they guessed this woman might be Grace.
"How could this be?" Rachel was in disbelief. "I was told Grace was long dead. This is impossible!"
Michael leaned against the car window, resting his head on his hand. "If your dad really killed Grace, why would he take the necklace off her? She's already dead, what use is the necklace?"
Rachel's eyes widened as she realized Michael had a point.
"Plus, before your dad died, he specifically told you to get that necklace. He said there was a secret behind it. My grandma told you that secret last time, but that doesn't mean the necklace is useless," Michael added.
Rachel pursed her lips. "That necklace must have another purpose beyond revealing the truth. Otherwise, he could have just had your grandma tell me about the Williams-Brown feud."
Michael's eyes showed a hint of admiration; she was sharper than he had thought.
"Maybe your dad gave you that necklace to help you find Grace," Michael pondered aloud.
Rachel wasn't surprised; she had vaguely considered it too. "Maybe what my dad threw into the water wasn't Grace," Rachel muttered, touching the necklace. "He made everyone think it was, while the real Grace was hidden and raised by him somewhere."
Michael gently rubbed his palms, a hint of barely noticeable anticipation in his voice. "Do you want me to help you find her?"
"No need," Rachel said firmly but calmly. "This is my business; I can handle it myself. Besides, you should help Mandy first—they're biological sisters, after all."
Assuming Grace was still alive and her father indeed wanted Rachel to find her, Rachel needed to figure out why. Was he trying to return Grace to the Brown family, or did he have some other ulterior motive?
Although he had anticipated Rachel would decline his offer, Michael still felt a pang of discomfort when he heard it. He lowered his eyes. "The Brown family will naturally look for her; they don't need my involvement."
"Then why did you just say you were willing to help me?" Rachel retorted. This time Michael didn't respond.
At that moment, Rachel heard a knock on the door. "Mr. Smith, regardless of your reasons for telling me that the Brown family is looking for the necklace's owner, I still want to thank you. Mr. Smith, I have some matters to attend to, we'll talk next time." She put down the phone and sat back down. "Come in."
Lily pushed the door open and entered the room. "Ms. Williams, Mr. Roberts is back."
Rachel smiled. "Perfect timing, please notify all department heads to have a meeting as soon as possible."
"Okay." Lily nodded excitedly. It was clear she understood the importance of the upcoming discussion.
At the same time, Frank, who received the meeting invitation, let out a cold laugh. "Looks like she's in a hurry to surrender!"
Manager Walter Wood beside him asked in confusion, "But how do you know we'll win? What if she ends up winning?"
Frank glared coldly at Walter, his tone full of disdain. "You think she can win? I know her capabilities. Besides, we both know nothing about the new energy industry, we can't even write a decent business plan, let alone secure this cooperation opportunity."
"But I'm still worried about this sudden emergency meeting."
"Alright, no need to be so nervous. She must have failed in the negotiations and called everyone here. Let's go to the conference room and see what she wants to do!" After saying this, he left his office first. Walter sighed and followed Frank, who was departing proudly.
When most people were seated in the conference room, Rachel, sitting in her seat, looked at her watch. "How many people haven't arrived yet?"
