Chapter 35
Mandy tried to keep her voice calm, but her words were clearly meant to provoke Rachel.
Rachel just smiled, cool as a cucumber. "Miss Brown, you spoke up first. Go ahead, it's all yours."
Mandy was caught off guard. She didn't expect Rachel to back down so easily.
"Mandy, I think Rachel's scared of you," her friend whispered, trying to butter her up. "Ever since she split from Mr. Smith, she's got no one to lean on, and her company's about to go under. She wouldn't dare go up against you."
Mandy felt a rush of satisfaction hearing that. She handed her bank card to Mary and said, "Charge it and wrap it up."
But Mary didn't take the card. Instead, she asked, "Ma'am, are you a VIP member here?"
"No," Mandy replied, a bit irritated. "Are you saying I can't buy this watch with my card?"
Mary looked a bit uncomfortable. "All our watches can be bought with a card, but not this series. This one is only for VIP customers who have spent over six million dollars and have been with us for more than two years."
Mandy was speechless.
"You're just a watch salesman; where do you get all that arrogance?!" Mandy's friend snapped, "Get your manager! It's crazy that we can't buy a watch even with money!"
Mary stayed calm. "There are specific conditions for this series. Even if the manager comes, it won't change anything."
Mandy's friend asked, "If we can't buy it, can she?"
"Ms. Williams can," Mary said. "She became a VIP customer two years ago and meets the spending requirement."
Mandy struggled to keep her cool.
Rachel had seen enough. She handed her card to Mary and said, "Since Miss Brown can't buy it, I'll take it."
In no time, Mary came back with the receipt and the wrapped watch.
Rachel thanked her and, as she was about to leave, paused beside Mandy. "Some things, even if I gave you first dibs, you still might not be able to get your hands on."
To Mandy, those words felt like a slap. Watching Rachel walk away, she remembered something James had said at dinner last night, and her eyes filled with anger. 'Why does Rachel always have to take what's mine?' she thought.
Rachel was in a great mood. As she took the elevator to the underground garage, she ran into someone she knew.
"Ms. Williams," Ella White greeted her with a smile.
"Ella?" Rachel quickly recognized the tall young woman. Ella and John were college friends. Ella was supposed to join John's company, but knowing Rachel needed someone she could trust at Skyline Corporation, John had Ella come to help her out.
Rachel had been super busy lately, but she knew Ella was working in the finance department and doing a great job.
"There are so many employees in the company. I didn't expect Ms. Williams to remember me," Ella said with a smile, holding a small cake. "There's a dessert shop here that's really good. I took the day off to buy some sweets. What about you, Ms. Williams? Shopping for clothes?"
"It's John's birthday today, so I got him a gift," Rachel said, shaking the gift bag. "Got any plans for tonight?"
Ella shook her head, "Nope, just planning to go home and binge-watch a TV show on the couch."
"Then come with us. The more, the merrier," Rachel said. "You and John go way back, so it'll be fun."
"Since you insist, I won't say no!" Ella grinned and hit the elevator button. "Let's go to the second floor. I'll grab John a lighter. Can't show up empty-handed."
Ella was not just pretty but also super chatty. Once she started talking, she didn't stop. Rachel found it funny that someone could talk even more than John.
When Rachel and Ella got to Moonlight Club, John called. "My grandma wants to celebrate my birthday at home, so I gotta head back for dinner. I'll be at Moonlight Club around ten."
"Alright, we'll have dinner and wait for you in the private room," Rachel said, hanging up and leading Ella to the restaurant.
After they found a seat, Ella looked around and asked, "Ms. Williams, I heard you need to verify your assets to get into this club. Is that true?"
Rachel nodded. "Yeah, I made the reservation under John's name."
"Why not use Mr. Smith's name?" Ella asked, curious. "Aren't you two married? Using his card would be easier."
Rachel's expression stayed calm. "How do you know I'm married to Mr. Smith?"
"Everyone knows. It's no secret," Ella replied. "But I'm curious, as his wife, why hasn't Mr. Smith helped you with Skyline Corporation's troubles?"
"He's busy with his own stuff," Rachel said calmly. "And I divorced Mr. Smith a few weeks ago. I'm not his wife anymore."
Ella gasped. Seeing Rachel's mood drop, Ella raised her glass and clinked it with Rachel's. "Congrats on your divorce, Ms. Williams! Being single is awesome, fewer headaches! If you ever want to remarry, think about John. You two grew up together, and he adores you. You'd be perfect together!"
Rachel couldn't help but laugh at Ella's teasing, feeling much better. After dinner, they chatted as they walked to the private room to wait for John. Just as they left the restaurant, they almost bumped into a group of women.
Rachel was about to step aside when she realized Mandy and her friend from the watch store were among them.
Mandy hadn't expected to run into Rachel twice in one day and looked annoyed. "Ms. Williams," Mandy said reluctantly, "I heard Skyline Corporation's financial situation isn't great. You need to verify your assets to enter this club."
Rachel smiled, "I know. I used my boyfriend's card. Got a problem with that, Miss Brown?"
Mandy quickly thought of something and suggested, "My friends and I are going to play cards, and we're short a person. Since we ran into you, why not join us? We're all familiar with each other."
She then introduced Rachel to the woman beside her, "This is Rachel, the Vice President of Skyline Corporation."
Mandy spoke very politely to the woman beside her, even lowering her tone a bit, seemingly trying to please her.
Rachel took a closer look and saw that the woman was wearing a black spaghetti-strap dress, looking stunning and confident, overshadowing the other women around her.
"Who is this Miss Brown? Why is she so hostile toward you?" Ella whispered to Rachel.
"She's the woman my ex-husband likes," Rachel murmured.
