Chapter 143
Rachel raised an eyebrow and said calmly, "I don't get what you're saying, Miss Brown. Why should I be happy?"
"You hit me last night, and I have no proof, so I have to let it go. Doesn't that make you happy?" Mandy sneered.
Rachel chuckled lightly. "Miss Brown, I've already told you, we didn't hit you. Please don't bring this up again, or I will get angry."
After saying that, Rachel put down her juice and stood up, ready to check on John.
Just as she took a step, Mandy stomped her foot and called out, "Wait, Ms. Williams."
Rachel turned to look at Mandy. "Is there anything else, Miss Brown?"
Mandy squinted her eyes and provocatively said, "It's just the two of us here. Don't you think it's hypocritical to pretend you didn't do it?"
Rachel smiled calmly. "Hypocritical? So, in Miss Brown's view, denying something I didn't do is hypocritical."
"This was clearly done by you!" Mandy raised her voice and shouted angrily.
Rachel still smiled. "I still say the same thing, if you are so sure, then show the evidence. Otherwise, please shut up. Or I will sue you. Goodbye!" Then Rachel strode away, leaving Mandy standing there with anger.
Mandy took out her phone, and the screen showed a recording interface. She had originally planned to record Rachel admitting to hitting her and then post it online to make her face public pressure. Unexpectedly, Rachel didn't fall for it.
"Mandy." Michael walked over with a suitcase.
Mandy immediately turned off her phone, and turned around with a smile. "Michael, are you ready?"
"Yes, let's go." Michael nodded.
Mandy took his arm, and they walked out of the villa together.
As soon as they exited the villa, they heard Rachel's clear and cheerful laughter. Michael glanced toward the car and saw Rachel looking at John, who was covered in black mud. She was laughing brightly, tears glistening in her eyes.
John said helplessly and dotingly, "Rachel, stop laughing."
"Sorry, sorry, I won't laugh anymore," Rachel responded repeatedly.
Yet in the next second, witnessing John's face grow even dirtier the more he scrubbed it, she couldn't help but double over in laughter once more.
John's mouth twitched. "Rachel!" Rachel held her stomach and laughed even more happily.
John sighed. "Fine, laugh as much as you want." He could only pamper the person he liked.
After laughing for a while, Rachel took a deep breath and slowly stopped laughing. Then, Rachel took out a handkerchief from her pocket and said, "Here, wipe it."
"My hands are too dirty from fixing the tire just now. Rachel, can you help me wipe it?" John asked expectantly.
Rachel glared at him but eventually took the handkerchief and wiped his face. John closed his eyes and enjoyed, saying, "You are so nice."
"Stop flattering me." Rachel looked at him helplessly.
Not far away, Michael witnessed this scene, clenched his fists, and his expression became increasingly gloomy.
Mandy sensed his abnormality, and a look of jealousy flashed in her eyes. "Michael, Ms. Williams and Mr. Davis have a really good relationship," Mandy said with a smile.
Michael withdrew his gaze, lowered his eyes to hide the coldness in them, and said lightly, "Let's go."
He was afraid that if he stayed any longer, he would really go over and push John away, though he didn't understand why he had such an impulse.
Mandy nodded. "Okay."
A group of seven people left the place in three cars. Rachel and John arrived at the Davis Manor.
As soon as they entered, Victoria warmly took Rachel's hand. "Rachel, how was your time these past two days?"
"It was quite enjoyable," Rachel took the fruit Victoria handed her and replied with a smile.
Victoria beamed. "I'm glad to hear that. Did anything special happen?"
"Something special?" Rachel blinked in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Victoria's smile gradually stiffened. "For example, accidentally falling into a pit or getting locked in a room. Didn't you and John encounter anything like that?"
"No, we didn't." Rachel shook her head. "Why would you think we would encounter something like that?"
Victoria's eyes flickered, and she laughed awkwardly. "I was just guessing. I watched a TV show a couple of days ago where the main characters went on vacation and easily encountered such situations, so I was just asking if you had any similar experiences."
Rachel nodded in realization and then smiled. "Don't worry, Victoria. There aren't that many coincidences in real life."
"That's true." Victoria forced a smile and then stood up. "Rachel, you sit here for a while. I'll go upstairs to get something."
"Okay," Rachel responded.
Victoria headed upstairs to John's room. John had just finished his shower and changed into fresh clothes, looking as handsome as ever. Before he could admire himself, he noticed his mother entering as she pushed the door open.
He quickly put down his hands that were about to strike a pose and glared at his mother. "Mom, what brings you here?"
"I want to ask you, how did your time with Rachel go these past two days?" Victoria asked.
John's eyes darkened for a moment, and he pouted, "This wasn't even a date." It was clearly a group activity since seven people went out together.
"Not a date?" Victoria squinted at her son. "The ranch has so many entertainment facilities. It was a perfect opportunity, but you did nothing. I even had people set up some things there."
"Mom, what did you set up?" John looked at Victoria in surprise.
Victoria cast him a glance and said helplessly, "I dug a hole on the golf course, hoping you'd fall in while playing and have a chance for some intimate contact. I also broke the lock on the door of the master bedroom on the third floor, intending to trap you both inside. When a man and a woman are alone together, feelings tend to heat up."
Victoria was trembling with anger. "But you didn't fall for any of it. All my efforts were in vain."
John was speechless. "So, Mom, you did all that."
"I've put a great deal of thought into bringing you and Rachel together." Victoria sighed, sitting down at the edge of the bed.
John scratched his head. "Why didn't you tell me earlier? Actually, we didn't even go golfing or stay in the master bedroom on the third floor. We stayed in the guest rooms, so your plans were naturally useless."
"How could I tell you? I know you too well. If I told you, Rachel would have sensed my intentions, and all my efforts would have been wasted," Victoria said unhappily.
John shrugged. Victoria stood up. "Forget it. It looks like I'll have to find another chance to help with your relationship. Now, hurry up and dry your hair and come down for dinner."
"Got it." John nodded. Victoria left the room and went downstairs.
After lunch, Rachel left the Davis Manor and returned to Starglow Valley Estates. After being away for two days, a thin layer of dust had accumulated in the apartment.
Rachel tied her hair back, donned an apron, and swiftly tidied up the apartment. She then entered the study to perfect the collaborative proposal on new energy technology, as it was due the following day.
After completing the proposal back then, she had sent it to several renowned university professors, all of whom gave positive feedback. Therefore, she was confident about the upcoming results.
Rachel worked until nightfall, and it wasn't until the study became dim and her stomach growled with hunger that she stopped working.
"It's almost eight o'clock." Rachel looked at her phone, stretched, and opened the drawer to put away the proposal.
Suddenly, she saw the key in the drawer. It was the one Catherine had given her at the hospital last time. It was said that the Williams family had hidden something very important, which was related to a huge secret. It seemed she needed to find time to go back and check it out. Rachel put the key back in its place, her expression complex as she pondered.
The next morning, Rachel arrived at Skyline Corporation. Lily followed behind her, reporting, "Ms. Williams, while you were away these past few days, Mr. Roberts has been rallying quite a few colleagues who originally supported you."
