Chapter 23
Rachel came back last night in a foul mood, drank until midnight, and had barely slept when her phone started ringing. She fumbled for it on the nightstand and answered, "Hello?"
A voice came through, "Ms. Williams, this is Lily Moore."
Hearing the name, Rachel snapped to attention. Lily had been John's secretary before he assigned her to help her at Skyline Corporation.
"What's up?" Rachel asked, heading to the bathroom.
Lily's voice was steady. "There are a few urgent documents that need your attention at the office. What time can you come in?"
Rachel glanced at her phone. "Around 8:30 AM."
"Okay," Lily replied.
Hanging up, Rachel splashed cold water on her face, trying to shake off the remnants of last night's hangover. The water helped a bit, but her head was still pounding. Her reflection in the mirror showed a tired and pale face.
Stepping out of her bedroom, Rachel noticed the mess in her living room—a harsh reminder of her wild night. She sighed, feeling the weight of her actions.
When Rachel drove to the office, it was exactly 8:30 AM. As soon as she sat down, Lily came in. "Ms. Williams, these are the urgent documents that need your signature," she said.
"Okay," Rachel replied, opening the first document. "Has the contract with Wisdom-Tech Group been signed?"
"It was supposed to be signed at nine this morning, but Wisdom-Tech Group backed out," Lily reported helplessly.
"Backing out?" Rachel frowned and reached for her phone. "I'll call John and have him talk to them."
"Ms. Williams, don't," Lily quickly interjected. "Mr. Davis was supposed to go to Wisdom-Tech Group this morning, but he had to attend to something urgent at his company. He said he'd handle it later."
Rachel paused. She had been relying heavily on John's help, forgetting that he had his own business to manage.
After a moment, she sighed. "Check the schedule of the Wisdom-Tech Group's boss for me. Let me know once you find out. I'll handle these documents first."
Lily was stunned. "Didn't Mr. Davis say to wait for him to handle it?"
Rachel shook her head. "He's busy. I can't expect him to solve all my problems. Besides, I need to learn how to handle these matters myself or I won't last."
"Understood, Ms. Williams." Lily left the office, leaving Rachel alone with the daunting paperwork.
Since Rachel was new to these things and the documents contained many technical terms, she read them slowly. By noon, she had only processed a third of them. After eating the lunch brought by Lily, she continued to work on the remaining documents. It wasn't until 2:30 in the afternoon that she finished all the documents.
Rachel rubbed her sore neck and noticed her phone lighting up on the desk, indicating a new message. She opened it to check.
Robert: [Rachel, the company’s sending me on a two-month business trip to Radiant Isle. Because of the time difference, I might not be able to respond to your messages quickly. If there's an emergency, call the number I gave you.]
Rachel: [Got it. Stay safe out there.]
Just then, a notification popped up, showing a significant deposit into her bank account—ninety million dollars. Her eyes widened in shock.
Could it be that John had sold the 'Azure Heart' already? As she pondered, another message from Robert appeared.
Robert: [I know Skyline Corporation is in a tough spot and needs liquidity. Use this money for now. If it's not enough, let me know.]
Rachel: [I still have money in my account. If the worst happens, I can ask John for help. I can't take your money.]
Robert: [Six years ago, if it weren't for your help, I wouldn't be where I am today. My money is yours.]
Rachel felt a warmth spread through her, grateful for his support.
Rachel: [Agreed. Consider this a loan to Skyline Corporation. Once we're back on our feet, I'll repay you with interest.]
At that moment, there was a knock on the office door. "Come in," Rachel responded.
Lily walked in, carrying a box of fruit. She explained, "Ms. Williams, this was delivered by a courier from Four Seasons Orchard."
After speaking, Lily glanced at Rachel, noticing that she seemed quite happy. She thought to herself, 'Does Ms. Williams know who sent this fruit?'
Rachel opened the box to find it filled with mangoes. For a moment, she was taken aback, then smiled, realizing that John, who knew her preferences, must have sent them.
Rachel shifted her gaze from the box of mangoes and asked Lily, "Did you find out where the Wisdom-Tech Group boss is?"
"Yes," Lily replied. "He's at Red Maple Lodge, playing cards. I've sent the address to your Facebook."
"Good," Rachel said, grabbing her coat. "Once Skyline's finances improve, expect a raise."
"Thank you, Ms. Williams," Lily said, clearly pleased.
As Rachel moved toward the elevator, Lily remembered the heavy rainstorm forecast for the day but didn’t get a chance to remind her as the elevator doors closed.
Immediately, her coworkers swarmed around, curious.
"Did Ms. Williams say anything about the mangoes?" one asked.
"She just opened the box and took a look," Lily replied. "It's well-known that Mr. Smith and Ms. Williams have history. Why would he still send fruit after the divorce?"
"Could it be that Mr. Smith regrets the divorce?" one said.
"Impossible! Everyone knows Mr. Smith is with Miss Mandy now. He even proposed with the 'Azure Heart'!" one retorted.
"Maybe Mr. Smith thinks they can still be business partners after the divorce?" another guessed.
"Our company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and no one wants to acquire it. Mr. Smith wouldn't be interested!" one sighed.
