Chapter 153
Michael held her tight as he headed to the car. "I'm taking you home."
"No way. I'll grab a cab. Let go." Rachel kicked and pushed against his chest with all her strength.
Michael almost lost his grip, frowning. "If you keep this up, you'll fall. Do you know what could happen if you fall?" He looked down at her.
Meeting Michael's intense gaze, Rachel instinctively quieted down and muttered, "What do you mean?"
"If you fall, you might hit your head and get hurt. Tomorrow's the big day for the partnership decision. Do you want to miss it because of an injury?" Michael cut her off.
Rachel pouted. She thought he had figured out she was pregnant, which freaked her out since she hadn't told anyone.
"Then let go of me, and I won't fall," Rachel said coldly.
Michael didn't answer. He knew she wouldn't get in the car willingly, so he had to do it this way. No way he was letting her go. If he did, she'd definitely walk away again.
Soon, Michael had carried Rachel to the car. He put her down and took out the keys to unlock the car. Rachel tried to make a run for it. Michael squinted and grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
Rachel yelped as her back hit the car door. Michael placed his hands on either side of her neck, looking at her with dark eyes. "Still trying to leave?"
Rachel laughed angrily, glaring at him. "Michael, what do you want?"
"To take you home!" Michael said slowly.
Rachel was furious. "I said I'll get a cab myself. I don't need you to take me. Don't you get it?"
Michael lowered his eyes. "I'm just following Grandma's orders to take you home. Get in the car." He lowered his hands and pressed the key to unlock the door.
Rachel frowned. "Catherine asked you to take me?"
Michael's eyes flickered. "Yeah."
"But when Catherine suggested in the ward that you escort me, and I refused, she didn't push it. How could she ask you to come out now? Michael, are you lying to me?" Rachel scrutinized him.
Michael opened the car door. "No, Grandma said it was dark and she didn't feel safe letting you walk alone, so she decided to have me come out and take you. Now get in the car. You don't want her to worry, do you?"
Rachel fell silent and finally sighed. "Fine." With that, she turned and got into the car.
Seeing this, Michael's frown slightly relaxed as she finally believed him. Then, Michael closed the back door, walked around the car, and got into the driver's seat. "Back to Starglow Valley Estates?"
Rachel looked out the window and responded indifferently. Michael pursed his lips and started the car.
The whole way, Rachel didn't say a word to him because she had nothing to say. Michael glanced at her a few times through the rearview mirror, and the quiet Rachel made him uncomfortable.
In the past six years, he had ridden in a car with Rachel before. Back then, Rachel still loved him, so she would always find things to talk about in the car. He usually just listened without responding; sometimes he even found her too talkative and annoying, telling her to shut up.
Now that she really shut up and no longer took the initiative to talk to him, he felt uneasy. Thinking about it, Michael's thin lips moved. He didn't know why, but he took the initiative to ask, "Are you and John planning to get married?"
"What?" Rachel was stunned, clearly surprised by his sudden question.
"I don't know." Rachel shook her head.
A glimmer of light flashed in Michael's eyes, but before he could savor his small joy, Rachel continued, "Maybe in the future. After all, he and his parents treat me well. Marrying John would definitely make me happy."
Michael gripped the steering wheel tightly, his face darkening. He could tell she was mocking him and the Smith family. But he had to admit, John did treat her well. Marrying John would definitely be better than being with him.
Even though it was the truth, Michael still felt uncomfortable and irritated. He tugged at his tie, his voice cold. "Is that so? Then I wish you all the best."
"Thank you, Mr. Smith. I also wish you and Miss Brown a lifetime of happiness," Rachel said with a smile.
Michael pressed his thin lips together and didn't respond. For some reason, he didn't like that blessing. It wasn't the words themselves, but he didn't like her blessing him and Mandy.
The rest of the way, they were silent again; the atmosphere was even more oppressive than before.
Rachel could sense that Michael was in a bad mood, but she didn't know why and didn't want to know. She simply put on her headphones and listened to music.
Michael noticed, and the air around him grew even colder. She had upset him, yet she remained blissfully indifferent, listening to music, which really pissed him off.
Before long, they arrived at Starglow Valley Estates. Michael parked the car, and Rachel got out.
As Rachel stood by the roadside, she suddenly called out, then opened her wallet, took out some cash, and knocked on the car window.
The back window rolled down, and Michael turned his head, looking at her through the back window. "What is it?" There was a hint of barely noticeable anticipation in his voice.
"Nothing, I just forgot to pay for the ride," Rachel said with a distant smile, then threw the money into the car window and walked towards the building.
Michael glanced at her retreating figure, then at the money on the backseat, his demeanor growing increasingly cold.
The next day, Rachel arrived at the office. Lily came in and said, "Ms. Williams, Mr. Anderson is here to see you."
"Joseph?" Rachel paused.
Lily nodded. "Yes."
"Why is he here?" Rachel asked, sitting down.
Lily replied, "He mentioned he has something to tell you."
"I see. Let him in," Rachel said, turning on her computer.
Joseph never looked for her without a reason. It seemed what he had to say was important.
Soon, Joseph came in, holding a file folder. He looked serious, which was unusual for him, making Rachel a bit uncomfortable.
"Sit." Rachel pointed to the chair opposite her, then looked at Lily. "Get Mr. Anderson a cup of coffee."
"Yes," Lily responded and left.
Then only Rachel and Joseph remained in the office. Rachel looked at him. "You said you had something to tell me. What is it?"
Joseph handed over the file folder. "Do you remember when you almost fell off the horse?"
Rachel nodded. "Of course." She was extremely frightened at the time. How could she forget?
"What you want to say is related to my near fall from the horse?" Rachel asked.
Joseph nodded. "Actually, your fall wasn't an accident."
"What?" Rachel was stunned, her hand stopping as she opened the file folder. "You said it wasn't an accident?"
"That's right, it was intentional," Joseph replied seriously.
"How could that be? John told me it was an accident, and you were there during the investigation." Rachel frowned.
Joseph leaned back. "Yes, during the investigation, the results showed it was an accident. But the next day, when I went out for a ride..." Then he recounted how he found the musk.
