Chapter 117 She Must Have an Abortion
Gregory shrugged. "Beats me. Usually, the dark side comes out when someone's feeling threatened. Maybe your ex did something to set her off."
"No way!" Michael shot back, his voice getting louder.
Gregory gave him a skeptical look. "You're just defending her."
Michael's face hardened. "I'm not. I just have a gut feeling she didn't do it," he said coolly.
Gregory raised his hands in a calming gesture. "Alright, alright, let's say she didn't. This dark side showed up for the first time, so Mandy lost her memory of that period. If it keeps happening, this other personality might show up more often."
"Can it be fixed?" Michael asked, his eyes searching Gregory's face.
Gregory nodded confidently. "There are plenty of cases where people with split personalities have been treated successfully, especially when the personality is new like Mandy's. The chances are pretty good."
Michael leaned in, his voice tense. "How do we fix it?"
Gregory adjusted his glasses thoughtfully. "Spend more time with her, keep her happy, avoid your ex, especially avoid situations where you two are together. As long as there's no big stress, the other personality won't come out, and over time, they might merge."
Michael nodded, though he didn't look convinced. "Got it."
Gregory patted Michael's shoulder. "Alright, I gotta get back to work. Just got back to the country, lots to do." He turned and walked away.
Michael stood there, staring at the door, his lips pressed into a thin line. He never thought Mandy would be so messed up that she'd develop a split personality. It seemed like everything she'd done in the past month was because of this other side of her.
Suddenly, he heard a faint sobbing. Without thinking, Michael pushed open the door to the consultation room.
Mandy looked startled. She froze for a moment, then quickly turned to walk further inside. "Mandy," Michael called softly.
Mandy stopped, wiped the tears from her eyes, and forced a smile. "Michael, did you finish talking with Gregory?"
Michael nodded, his eyes on her. "Did you hear everything?"
Mandy nodded, tears welling up. "Michael, do I really have a split personality?"
Michael hesitated, then finally said, "Yeah."
Mandy covered her face and started to cry. "I'm sorry, Michael, I didn't know. I really didn't know."
Michael stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. "It's okay. It's not your fault, you don't need to apologize."
"But I just heard Gregory say that the personality is very bad and hostile toward Ms. Williams. Did I really do something to her during the time I don't remember?" Mandy asked, clutching Michael's shirt, tears streaming down her face.
Michael lowered his head and spoke in a deep voice, "Your alternate personality pushed Rachel down the stairs."
Mandy gasped, her eyes wide with shock. "How could this happen? Did I want to kill Ms. Williams?"
"It wasn't you, it was your alternate personality," Michael corrected gently, stroking her hair.
Mandy bit her lip, her voice choked with emotion. "Even if it was my alternate personality, that personality is still me. No wonder I targeted Ms. Williams several times before. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn't control it. It turns out I have a mental illness!" She hit her head hard, full of regret.
"Mandy, don't do that," Michael comforted as he quickly grabbed her hand. "I told you, it's not your fault."
"It is my fault. I not only framed Ms. Williams for hitting me with her car but also made her fall, and now I pushed her down the stairs. It's all my fault." Mandy cried sadly.
Michael kissed her forehead gently, his voice gentle. "The previous incidents were influenced by your alternate personality, and pushing Rachel down the stairs was entirely done by the alternate personality, not you. You don't have the memory of it, so don't blame yourself."
"But Ms. Williams definitely won't let me go," Mandy sobbed. "Michael, is she okay?"
"She's fine," Michael assured her.
Mandy patted her chest, relieved. "That's good. As long as she's okay. I just don't know if Ms. Williams will forgive me."
"She said she would call the police," Michael said.
"Call the police?" Mandy was first shocked, then she smiled bitterly. "That's right, I pushed her down the stairs. She should call the police. I should be responsible for my actions and go to jail. But I've heard that prison is very scary, that the female inmates torture people. I don't know if that's true."
She glanced at Michael seemingly unintentionally. Michael didn't notice, recalling Gregory's words. If Mandy went to prison, it would only worsen her split personality. Thinking of this, he squinted his eyes and promised, "Don't worry, I won't let you go to prison."
"Really?" Mandy's eyes were filled with hope, but then they dimmed. "But Ms. Williams won't agree."
"I'll talk to her," Michael said calmly. Just then, his phone rang. It was David.
"What's up?" Michael asked as he picked up the call.
David's voice was respectful. "Mr. Smith, two research teams from abroad have arrived and are hoping to get authorization from us to develop new energy technology."
"Got it. Treat them well, I'll be back soon," Michael responded.
After hanging up, he turned to Mandy. "I need to head back to the company to handle some things. You rest up and don't overthink. I'll take care of everything."
Mandy nodded. "Okay."
Michael turned and left. Not long after, Gregory returned. He looked at Mandy with a complicated expression. "Is this really a good idea? Pretending to have a split personality? If you're exposed, your reputation will be ruined."
"So what?" Mandy shrugged dismissively. "My reputation was already trashed when I falsely accused Rachel at the last party. I'm not afraid of it getting worse. Besides, are you sure I'll definitely be exposed?"
Gregory adjusted his glasses, a hint of doubt in his eyes. "Nothing is absolute. I'm just reminding you to be careful."
Mandy's lips curled into a smug smile as she leaned back in her chair. "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. This is my only option. Otherwise, Michael won't help me, and I might really go to jail. More importantly, I've targeted Rachel so many times. Even if he doesn't say it, he already has a grudge against me."
She picked up a glass of water and took a sip with an air of confidence, continuing, "From the beginning, when he was unwilling to save me, it was clear. Pretending to have a split personality allows me to blame all the bad things on the alternate personality. This way, he won't be dissatisfied with me anymore, but will feel even more sorry for me."
'In the future, if I target Rachel again, Michael will just think it's because my condition is worsening,' she thought.
Gregory looked at the confident Mandy and helplessly shrugged. "Alright, since this is your decision, I respect it. Just make sure you're prepared for all the consequences."
"I knew you were the best to me," Mandy said with a sweet smile.
Gregory's eyes flickered for a moment, then softened. "You are my savior, my angel. How could I not be good to you?"
Mandy's smile froze for a moment, then she changed the subject. "By the way, I need your help with something else."
"What is it?" Gregory asked, not noticing her change in expression.
Mandy said, "Rachel has a recording of me pushing her down the stairs. Although Michael said he wouldn't let me go to jail, the recording is still a risk. I need you to destroy it."
"That's easy," Gregory agreed readily.
Mandy continued, "Also, Rachel is pregnant."
Gregory raised an eyebrow. "Whose kid?"
A flash of anger crossed Mandy's face. She snorted, "Michael's."
That night, she had drugged Rachel, intending for her to sleep with another man. But the plan had failed, and instead, Rachel had ended up sleeping with Michael. Thinking about it made Mandy furious.
Clenching her fists, Mandy said with a harsh tone, "So we must keep it from Michael. He can't know Rachel is pregnant with his child, at least not until she has a miscarriage!"
Otherwise, with Michael's sense of responsibility, he would definitely choose to marry Rachel and have her keep the child.
Gregory nodded. "What do you want me to do?"
Mandy leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Your family is in the medical field. You should be able to control all the hospitals in Summit Ridge District. I need you to keep an eye on Rachel. No matter which hospital she goes to for a check-up, you need to make sure the doctors tell her there's a problem with the baby and that she must have an abortion. Ideally, there should be an 'accident' during the surgery," she said with a terrifying smile.
Gregory's eyes widened in shock, his breath catching in his throat. Although he didn't consider himself a good person, he was still horrified by her cruelty. He couldn't help but wonder if the Mandy in front of him was really the same girl who had saved him at all costs when they were children.
However, when he saw Mandy's eyes, so similar to the ones in his memories, Gregory's doubts began to fade. "Alright, I'll help you achieve your wish," Gregory's eyes flickered as he replied.
Meanwhile, in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, Rachel sat nervously on the bench, awaiting her test results. After over ten minutes, the nurse called her into the examination room.
"Doctor, how are the results? Am I really pregnant?" Rachel asked nervously, her hands tightly clasped together.
The doctor nodded and handed her the pregnancy test report. "Congratulations, Ms. Williams, you are indeed pregnant. It's been one month and ten days."
Rachel was stunned. Despite being mentally prepared, hearing the definite answer still shocked her. 'Am I really pregnant? I can't believe it—I'm actually pregnant!' she thought.
Rachel trembled as she held the pregnancy test report, her face pale. She felt panicked and confused, not knowing what to do.
