Chapter 199

Joseph looked at Rachel, who shook her head and said, "I don't know either." She looked just as puzzled.

John quickly said, "Rachel, it's clear Gregory is serious. He said he'd make everyone who hurt you pay dearly. Mandy hurt you too, so does that mean he'll go after her as well? But isn't he on Mandy's side?"

Rachel frowned and said nothing.

Joseph asked again, "By the way, why did Gregory hug you just now?"

"Isn't it obvious? He must be attracted to Rachel's looks," John said angrily.

Then he slapped his thigh. "I get it now. He wants to protect you because he's attracted to you."

Rachel and Joseph both rolled their eyes at this.

"That's impossible," Joseph said helplessly. "If Gregory really had feelings for her, he would have shown it long ago. Why wait until now?"

Rachel nodded. "That's right. Besides, I think Gregory hugged me because he was excited, like meeting an old friend after many years and couldn't help but embrace them."

"Now that you mention it, I remember something," Joseph suddenly widened his eyes.

Rachel and John looked at him. "What did you remember?"

Joseph replied, "Do you remember Gregory saying, "You're still so kind"? The word "still" clearly indicates that he knew you from a long time ago and just remembered it now."

"Could it be..." Rachel's body stiffened, and she subconsciously touched the red birthmark on her wrist.

John quickly asked, "Rachel, do you know something?"

Rachel nodded. "After you left, Gregory asked me how I got this birthmark and if I had saved a little boy when I was ten. It seems that the little boy was him."

Ten years ago, on the anniversary of her mother's death, she took out her mother's photo, which angered her stepmother, who beat her. Heartbroken, she ran to her mother's favorite park and heard someone calling for help. She found a boy about her age who had fallen into the water. Without thinking, she found a stick and saved him. Although it was difficult, she succeeded in the end.

After hearing Rachel's story, Joseph and John suddenly understood.

"So that's it. You're Gregory's savior. No wonder he was so excited," Joseph said, stroking his chin.

John snorted, "Even if he says so, I don't believe he would really go after Mandy for Rachel."

Joseph nodded. "That's true. He is willing to do anything for Mandy."

Rachel smiled. "Don't worry. Gregory and I are not close. Even if I saved him, I never expected him to repay me. Whether in the past or now, I don't plan to have much interaction with him, so what he does has nothing to do with me."

The two men nodded. "That's true."

After that, Rachel didn't stay in the hospital for long and left after completing the discharge procedures.

Shortly after she left, Michael received the news.

"Got it." Michael hung up the phone and called David.

"Mr. Smith, what can I do for you?" David asked as he walked in.

Michael rubbed his temples. "Have you summarized the bank loans for Skyline Corporation?"

"Yes, the total loans from several banks amount to $1.2 billion, and with interest, it's $1.5 billion," David replied.

Michael nodded slightly. "Pay off Skyline Corporation's loans using an overseas account."

This way, Rachel wouldn't suspect that he was the one who paid off the loans.

This money was his compensation to her. Although she said she didn't want him to take responsibility, he couldn't really be irresponsible. Besides, she was still pregnant, and even though she would eventually terminate the pregnancy, he still had to follow through with his plan.

"Understood," David nodded.

Michael responded, "Has Mandy arrived? Let her come up."

"Miss Brown has already left," David replied, pinching his nose.

Michael frowned. "Left?"

"Yes."

Michael rubbed his thumb against his pen. "Is it because I didn't let her come up immediately?"

"No, she left after receiving a phone call," David shook his head.

"Whose call?" Michael asked.

David shrugged. "I'm not sure, but Miss Brown didn't look well. Something bad must have happened."

Michael was silent for a few seconds. "I see. You can go now."

"Yes," David replied and turned to leave.

Michael picked up his phone and dialed Mandy's number. She quickly answered, her voice gentle and soft as she said, "Michael, what's up?" There was no hint of anything wrong.

But Michael felt something was off. "David said you received a disturbing call. What happened?"

Standing in front of a private room, Mandy's eyes darkened, but she smiled and replied, "Nothing major; don't worry."

Michael responded, "That's good."

Mandy felt a bit choked. She thought, 'He doesn't even bother to ask for details?' But she couldn't say it out loud, otherwise she would seem too pretentious.

Mandy took a deep breath, suppressed her frustration, and forced a smile. "Alright, Michael, do you need anything else? If not, I'll hang up. I have to meet a friend."

Michael nodded. "Okay."

After the call ended, Mandy was even more upset. She thought, 'I told him I'm meeting a friend, and he didn’t even ask if it’s a guy or a girl. Is he really that cool with it?'

Mandy stomped her foot in anger and pushed open the private room door.

Gregory stood up and smiled at her, but the smile didn't reach his eyes, "Mandy, you're here."

Mandy didn't notice his unusual behavior and walked over. "Gregory, what happened? Why did it fail?"

"There was an unexpected situation," Gregory's eyes flickered.

Mandy angrily put down her bag. "So Rachel only lost the baby, but she's still alive, right?"

"No, her baby is still there. I didn't perform the surgery on her," Gregory adjusted his new glasses and looked at her.

Seeing her incredulous and furious expression, Gregory found it amusing.

Before today, if she had been this angry, he would have immediately comforted her. But now, he wanted to strangle her.

"Gregory, what are you saying? You didn't perform the surgery on Rachel?" Mandy clenched her hands tightly, her face twisted. "What are you doing? How could you betray me?"
