Chapter 92 Monica's Fear
Michael snapped back to reality, cleared his throat, and said, "It's nothing, let's go."
Mandy responded with a bright smile, "Okay."
Once they were in the car, Michael stared straight ahead, gripping the steering wheel tightly. He suddenly asked, "Mandy, are you involved in what's been happening online?"
Mandy's heart tightened, but she showed a bit of grievance on her face. "How could it be, Michael? Do you think it was me?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Michael pressed his lips together, neither confirming nor denying. He said, "I saw that post. The photos are screenshots of Rachel and me watching the game. You said you watched the live stream."
Rachel was right; Mandy could have done this out of jealousy, as it wasn't the first time.
A thin layer of mist appeared in Mandy's eyes. "Michael, how could you accuse me like this? Yes, I watched the live stream and found out you were hurt, but that doesn't mean I would do such a thing. Besides, I promised you I wouldn't target Ms. Williams anymore. How could I break my promise and disappoint you? What if you hate me because of it?" Her voice cracked with emotion.
With that, she angrily turned her head to look out the window, ignoring him.
Michael felt a wave of guilt and regret wash over him. Maybe he was being too suspicious. He sighed deeply. "Mandy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have doubted you so easily." He pulled the car over, unbuckled his seatbelt, and reached out to hug her.
Mandy buried her head in his chest, her voice choked with emotion. "It's okay. I know I don't get along with Ms. Williams, so whenever something happens to her, everyone suspects me. I'm used to it."
Michael felt heartbroken and gently patted her back. "I won't doubt you again."
"Really?" Mandy looked up at him with tearful eyes.
He nodded firmly. "Really!"
Mandy finally smiled through her tears. "Alright, Michael, let's drive. Parking here will block the road."
"Okay," Michael nodded and let go, re-buckled his seatbelt, and started the car again.
It seemed to be a misunderstanding. Mandy was so kind; how could she frequently do such things? The incident at the resort was just out of impulse.
Michael completely abandoned his suspicions about Mandy.
Mandy noticed and lowered her head slightly, a smile playing on her lips.
Soon, they arrived at Smith Corporation.
From a distance, Michael saw the media waiting at the entrance. He squinted and changed course to enter the building through a more discreet side door, leading Mandy in through the side entrance and taking the elevator to the top floor.
David was already waiting outside the CEO's office. When he saw them, he greeted, "Mr. Smith, Miss Brown."
"David," Mandy smiled in greeting.
David smiled back and then said to Michael, "Mr. Smith, I've arranged what you asked for. We should have results soon."
Michael acknowledged and walked into the office.
Mandy followed closely. She asked, "Michael, what do you plan to do once you find out who posted it?"
"Depends on what Rachel wants," Michael replied as he pulled out his office chair. "She's the biggest victim."
Mandy's face stiffened slightly. The biggest victim was Rachel? Did he mean that what happened six years ago wasn't true?
At that moment, Mandy's phone rang. She calmed herself, took out her phone, and her expression changed slightly when she saw the caller ID. She smiled at Michael. "Michael, I need to take this call. It's my dad."
Michael didn't suspect anything and nodded in agreement.
Mandy walked to the balcony with her phone, closed the door, and answered, "Hey, Monica."
"Mandy, did you see the post online?" Monica's excited voice came through.
Mandy's face stayed calm, but her tone was full of surprise. "Monica, don't tell me you did that?"
"Yep, it was me," Monica said proudly.
Mandy bit her lip. She said softly, "Monica, really? How could you do that?"
"What's wrong, Mandy? Did I mess up?" Monica frowned, a bit confused.
Mandy lowered her eyes and replied, "Of course it's wrong. You suddenly exposed what happened six years ago, and now Ms. Williams is getting harassed online."
"I know. I wanted her to get what she deserves and for everyone to see her true colors," Monica said nonchalantly.
Mandy sighed. "Monica, you've caused trouble. Michael is investigating who posted it."
Monica's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly dismissed it. "Why is Mr. Smith investigating this? Does he want to help Rachel? How could he do that? He's your fiancé."
"He probably won't," Mandy shook her head. "It might be for his and my sake since this is our private matter."
Monica's face turned pale, her hands and feet cold, and her voice trembled with fear. "What should I do?"
The post was already out, and she had hired marketing accounts to spread it. It couldn't be retracted. Monica regretted her impulsiveness. She had only wanted to teach Rachel a lesson but forgot that she was also exposing Michael's privacy.
Thinking of Michael's methods in the business world, Monica turned even paler.
Mandy sighed deeply. "I don't know, Monica. You were too impulsive."
Monica clutched her phone tightly, her voice almost crying. "Mandy, you have to help me. I did this for you. You have to save me, Mandy!"
"But how can I help you?" Mandy's fingers traced circles on the edge of the desk unconsciously, her voice full of worry.
Monica sniffled. "Mandy, you have to ask Mr. Smith. He cares so much about you; he'll definitely agree."
"Alright, I'll try," Mandy nodded.
Monica was so grateful she almost cried. "Thank you, Mandy."
"Don't mention it. We're good friends," Mandy said with a smile, though her eyes held no warmth, only a barely noticeable hint of sarcasm.
After the call ended, Mandy put down her phone and opened Twitter, browsing through the negative comments about Rachel.
In fact, she had long known that Monica was behind all this. In their last conversation, she had deliberately told Monica that she had promised Michael not to target Rachel.
This way, Monica, who couldn't bear to see her upset and already disliked Rachel, would take the initiative to act. Meanwhile, Mandy could keep her promise to Michael and stay out of it.
Mandy just hadn't expected Monica to cause such a stir. She rubbed her temples in frustration. No matter what, she had to protect Monica. After all, no one was more willing to teach Rachel a lesson for her than Monica.
With that thought, Mandy turned off her phone and walked into the office, just in time to hear David reporting, "Mr. Smith, we found the person who posted it. It's Monica."
Michael asked, "Who?" He couldn't recall the name for a moment.
David glanced in Mandy's direction and replied softly, "Miss Brown's friend."
Michael suddenly understood, his brows furrowing as he looked at Mandy. "You told her about what happened six years ago?"
