Chapter 89 A Twitter Update
Mandy blinked, trying to keep it together, and said, "Monica, I'm here."
Monica picked up on her sadness and got even more pissed. "Mandy, Rachel's gone too far. She's so shameless! We can't let her get away with this. Let's head to Downtown Sports Arena and confront her right now!"
"No, Monica, we don't have tickets to get in," Mandy said, her voice shaky as she tried not to cry. "Maybe we got it wrong. Ms. Williams might just want to watch the game."
"Got it wrong? Mandy, you're always too nice, always trying to see the good in people." Monica's voice was full of frustration. She stomped her foot, the sound echoing through the room. "Didn't you see? She was totally leaning into Mr. Smith."
"Really?" Mandy's face fell, her voice trembling. "Did she really do that?"
"Yeah," Monica confirmed. "That's why we can't let her off the hook."
Mandy started to sob. "But what can I do? I promised Michael I wouldn't hurt Ms. Williams."
"Mandy, you're not just gonna let her get away with it, are you?" Monica's voice was rising with anger.
Mandy cried even harder. "Ms. Williams might be getting back at me because my recovery led to her divorce from Michael. I owe her. Monica, let's just pretend we don't know."
With that, she hung up.
Monica, on the other hand, angrily pounded the bed, her frustration boiling over. Why did Mandy think she owed Rachel? Rachel had insisted on marrying Michael back then, even though Michael and Mandy already had feelings for each other. It was Rachel who owed Mandy.
"Mandy might forgive you, but I won't. A shameless woman like you, who likes to mess with other people's relationships, deserves public scorn," Monica muttered as she opened Twitter and posted from a burner account: [Six years ago, a woman interfered in Mr. Smith's relationship with Miss Brown. She took advantage of Miss Brown's car accident to marry into the Smith family. Six years later, Miss Brown wakes up, and the woman, now divorced and kicked out of the Smith family, still shamelessly clings to Mr. Smith.]
Monica attached several screenshots from the live room, the most striking of which showed Rachel throwing herself at Michael, with Michael's hands on her shoulders. The angle made it look like Rachel was making a move on him, rather than a collision. From Michael's expression, it seemed like he was pushing her away, not helping her steady herself.
Monica looked at her handiwork with satisfaction and then hired marketing accounts to quickly spread the post.
Soon, the post went viral, quickly becoming the top news story. Many netizens recognized Rachel and Michael, and comments flooded in.
[Oh my God, I thought they looked familiar during the live stream. Turns out it's the CEO of Smith Corporation and the VP of Skyline Corporation.]
[I recognized her. Rachel is also dating the CEO of Davis Group. She has Mr. Davis and still clings to Mr. Smith. Disgusting.]
[That's nothing. Didn't you read the description? Six years ago, she interfered in Mr. Smith and Miss Brown's relationship and took advantage of Miss Brown's car accident to marry into the Smith family. Now, after the divorce, she still won't let go. I feel sorry for Miss Brown and Mr. Davis.]
Netizens began tagging Mandy and John online, with some directly asking John if he had been cuckolded.
John found out about the whole mess during a meeting. He immediately stopped everything and stormed out, looking furious.
"Find out who's spreading these rumors!" John barked.
"Yes, Mr. Davis," his assistant, Samuel Robinson, replied quickly.
John added, "And try to control the online buzz."
"Mr. Davis, that's not easy. Our influence is limited," Samuel said, looking worried.
John glared at him. "Do you think I don't know that? Just do your best."
"Understood!" Samuel nodded and left.
John pulled out his phone and called Rachel.
Meanwhile, Rachel felt her phone buzzing in her bag. She was about to answer when she heard a panicked shout and James's anxious voice, "Rachel, watch out, dodge!"
What the heck? Rachel looked up just in time to see an orange basketball flying straight at her.
Her face went pale. Just as the ball was about to hit her, someone stepped in front of her and took the hit.
Michael grunted in pain, his face twisted. Rachel, now shielded by Michael, looked at him with a mix of emotions. "You..."
"Michael, are you okay?" James rushed over, cutting her off.
Michael rubbed his shoulder and said, "I'm fine."
"Are you sure?" James asked, still worried.
"Yes, really," Michael replied calmly.
"That's good," James sighed in relief and then turned to Rachel, "Rachel, are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Rachel said, her voice steady but her mind racing. Michael's quick move had kept her safe.
After making sure they were both okay, James turned to the court, his eyes locking onto the Amberlia player. "That jerk, can't win so he resorts to this. I'll deal with him!"
Fuming, he clenched his fists and headed back to the court, ready to confront the player.
But his teammates stopped him, and the argument fizzled out. A fight would mean disqualification for both teams.
Rachel noticed Michael's earlier suppressed groan and wasn't as easily convinced as James. She frowned. "Are you sure you're okay?"
Michael knew he couldn't hide it from her and said softly, "My shoulder got hit, but it's not serious."
"I see," Rachel muttered, her eyelashes trembling. She was momentarily speechless.
After a pause, she looked at him and asked, "Why did you save me just now? You didn't have to, right?"
Michael lowered his eyes, hiding his emotions, and said calmly, "That player threw the ball out of frustration because he couldn't beat James. Since James kept looking our way, the player guessed we were important to James. To hurt James, he threw the ball at us."
"I see," Rachel frowned, processing his words. How low could that Amberlia player go? Couldn't win, so he took it out on the audience.
Michael continued, "The ball was smashed toward you entirely because of James. If you got hurt, James would feel guilty. As his brother, it's my responsibility to prevent that."
"I understand," Rachel forced a smile, but inside she felt a pang of self-mockery. So he saved her for James. How laughable, she had overthought it again.
Rachel's heart, which had just warmed, turned cold once more.
At that moment, the sports arena manager and staff approached, apologetically asking, "We are very sorry. Are you two okay?"
