Chapter 44
Michael dodged on instinct.
Right then, the door to the ward swung open, and in walked Emily, carrying a thermos.
She took in the scene and paused, then flashed a warm smile. "Looks like I picked the wrong moment. Am I interrupting you? Should I wait outside?" She joked, pretending to step back.
Mandy's face turned beet red at Emily's words, and she quickly let go of Michael. "You're not interrupting, Mrs. Smith. Please, come in," she mumbled.
Emily strolled in with the thermos, still smiling. "As long as I'm not in the way. I called your mom this morning and heard you had a little tumble last night. Brought some goodies to check on you."
She glanced at Michael and teased, "No wonder Michael didn't come home last night. He was here playing nurse."
Thinking about the texts from Monica last night, Mandy felt a twinge of annoyance but kept it hidden. "Mrs. Smith, don't blame Michael. I was scared and asked him to stay," she said softly.
"It's all good. He should be here for you!" Emily said, her eyes scanning Mandy for any injuries. "Where'd you hurt yourself? Still in pain?"
"My leg's still a bit sore, but the doctor said it's nothing serious," Mandy replied.
"Be more careful next time," Emily gently scolded. "I brought some supplements for you. They're good for your health and beauty." She handed Mandy the thermos, her expression warm and caring.
Mandy smiled as she took it. "Thank you, Mrs. Smith."
Emily's eyes sparkled with mischief. "If you really want to thank me, work on giving me a grandchild soon." She winked playfully.
Mandy looked down, her cheeks turning a deep shade of red.
Mandy was not only beautiful and gentle but also came from a powerful family. The union of the Brown and Smith families would be highly beneficial.
Such a gentle and wealthy daughter-in-law was someone Emily hoped would marry into the Smith family soon.
"I liked you the moment I saw you!" Emily said warmly, her tone shifting as she mentioned Rachel with disdain. "Unlike Rachel, who has been in the Smith family for six years and is still unlikable."
She continued, her voice dripping with disdain. "I saw some messy news about her this morning. With a dad like hers, her character is also questionable. She even made videos to slander me! If it weren't for our Smith family supporting her these years, she might be worse off than a beggar!"
She snorted, "John may not have good character, but he's good at business. I really don't know why he chose Rachel. If I were John's mom, I wouldn't want a daughter-in-law like Rachel at all."
Michael stood by the bedside, listening to Emily talk about Rachel. His brows furrowed, and he felt uncomfortable.
The Williams family had gone bankrupt, but since marrying him, Rachel had never asked for anything. In the Smith family for six years, she always acted like a dutiful wife. He heard from the servants that Rachel always went along with Emily and never argued with her.
Emily was the one who first caused a scene at Skyline Corporation, and the employees there caught it on camera. Michael managed to suppress the incident, but Emily never let it go and blamed Rachel.
Michael felt a pang of guilt. He wondered, 'What kind of life did Rachel have in the Smith family during those six years of marriage?'
Feeling irritated, Michael cut off Emily's endless chatter. "Mom, we're already divorced. Stop bringing her up."
He grabbed his coat from the chair and said, "Since you have time, stay here with Mandy. I need to get back to work."
Emily didn't dare to push further and immediately stopped talking. "Alright, alright, you go ahead."
Mandy softly reminded him, "Michael, be careful."
Michael nodded. "Okay."
As Michael left the hospital room, the smile in Mandy's eyes slowly faded.
It wasn't until after three in the afternoon that Rachel saw the other party had accepted her money and replied with a "Got it."
She really couldn't remember how she ended up with that man last night, but judging by his demeanor, he didn't seem like the clingy type. He even seemed a bit aloof.
That was good; she could be at ease. But there was still something that made Rachel suspicious. She thought for a moment and found Joseph's number, then dialed it.
Joseph answered quickly, lazily asking, "Ms. Williams, what's up?"
"I know you're one of the owners of Moonlight Club. I need a favor." Rachel recalled the fragments she could remember and said, "Last night, I came out of the private room to go to the bathroom and vomit. A waiter passed by and gave me a bottle of water."
Joseph asked, confused, "What do you mean, Ms. Williams?"
Rachel said seriously, "After drinking that bottle of water, I don't remember much of what happened next. I know my alcohol tolerance, and I had just vomited in the bathroom. How could I lose consciousness completely? I suspect there was something wrong with that water."
Joseph raised an eyebrow, finding the situation interesting. Five minutes ago, when Michael texted him, he found out what those two had been up to at the Club's upstairs last night, and then he'd wiped the surveillance footage clean.
Now, Rachel was coming to him about the same matter. Could it be that Michael had resorted to underhanded tactics to get his ex-wife tampering with the water?
Rachel, feeling puzzled, asked, "Did you think of something?"
Joseph laughed. "I just didn't expect you to suspect someone bribed the waiter. Because the club is full of surveillance, and the waiters' backgrounds are strictly vetted."
"Just ask that waiter. Let me know if you find anything," Rachel said quickly, fearing he might suspect something. "Don't ask unnecessary questions!"
She hung up immediately after.
After work, Rachel drove back to Starglow Valley Estates. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw a school-uniformed teenager sitting cross-legged at her door.
She rolled her eyes, thinking, 'James is here again!'
Hearing footsteps, James looked up, then quickly got up from the ground, complaining, "What time do you get off work? You're so late. I've been sitting at your door for half an hour!"
