Chapter 183
"Kade, be a good boy and walk by yourself, okay?" Before Michael could speak, Rachel bent down and said to Kade.
She knew Michael had a slight cleanliness obsession and didn't really like children. It was impossible to ask him to carry a child.
Kade blinked and put his arms down. "Okay, I'll walk by myself."
"Good boy, Kade. Go with him now." Rachel smiled and ruffled his hair, then looked at Michael. "Mr. Smith, I'll leave Kade to you."
Michael responded, took Kade's small hand, and walked towards the restroom.
In the restroom, Kade was too short to reach the sink. Michael had no choice but to lift him up, frowning, "Take off your pants yourself, hurry up."
Kade pouted and lowered his head to unbutton his pants. Listening to the sound of trickling water, Michael's temples throbbed.
He never thought he would be helping someone use the restroom, and it was a task he had taken on himself.
"I'm done." Kade turned to Michael behind him.
Michael snapped out of it and put him back on the ground. "Put your pants on yourself."
Bringing Kade to the restroom was already a big concession for him; helping with pants was out of the question.
Kade didn't complain, obediently pulling up his pants slowly. After he was done, he looked up at the sink. "Mr. Smith, I want to wash my hands."
Michael rubbed his forehead. Why was he so troublesome? If it were his own child, it wouldn't be this much trouble. Thinking of this, Michael suddenly froze.
His own child, the one in Rachel's belly.
But Rachel didn't plan to keep it.
"Michael, I want to wash my hands!" Seeing Michael spacing out again, Kade couldn't help but stomp his foot.
Michael saw the disdain in Kade's eyes and glared at him.
What an unlovable child!
With a dark expression, Michael lifted Kade to the sink to let him wash his hands. After washing, he took Kade back to the dining area.
Rachel had been waiting for them. Seeing them return, she put down her water glass and stood up. "Mr. Smith, thank you."
"It's nothing." Michael glanced at Kade and said indifferently.
Rachel picked Kade up and placed him back in his seat, then turned to the still-standing Michael, puzzled. "Mr. Smith, you're here to eat, right? Now that Kade is done, you can go back to your meal."
Hearing her dismiss him, Michael pursed his lips slightly. Was she just using him and then discarding him?
At this moment, a middle-aged man in a uniform approached with a microphone. "Sir, Madam." He stopped in front of Rachel and Michael, smiling.
Both were taken aback, but Michael quickly recovered, not only unoffended by the address but somewhat pleased, a small smile forming on his lips.
Rachel frowned and corrected, "Sorry, we're not."
"Is there something you need?" Before she could finish, Michael interrupted her.
Rachel looked at Michael in surprise, not understanding why he interrupted her.
The middle-aged man didn't notice anything amiss and politely explained, "I'm the manager of this restaurant. We're holding a parent-child event and had invited five families, but the fifth family had to leave suddenly. I hope you can participate in their place."
Rachel was about to refuse when the manager spoke again, "The first prize includes many rewards, like toys that children love, such as Gundam models."
"Gundam?" Kade's eyes lit up; he loved mecha toys.
Seeing Kade's expression, Rachel felt a sense of foreboding. Michael felt the same but was somewhat expectant.
"Yes." The manager, seeing Kade's interest, quickly enticed, "If you like it, let your mom and dad join the event with you."
"Okay!" Kade nodded vigorously.
Rachel's mouth twitched as her premonition came true, while Michael's eyes gleamed and his smile grew.
"Mom and Dad, can we join the event?" Kade climbed off the sofa, tugging at Rachel and Michael's clothes, looking up and pleading.
For a toy, calling someone else mom and dad, this kid was really something.
Rachel helplessly ruffled Kade's hair. "Kade, do you really want it?"
"Yes." Kade nodded vigorously.
"But," Rachel began to say, but Michael interrupted her, "Let's join."
Rachel looked at him. "What did you say?"
"Since Kade wants it, let's join." Michael answered calmly.
"Yay, thank you, Dad!" Kade clapped happily.
Michael was quite pleased with being called Dad, finally finding Kade a bit more agreeable.
Rachel frowned. "No, we can't join."
After all, they were just ex-spouses. If Mandy found out, that crazy woman would cause trouble again.
Hearing Rachel's firm refusal, Michael lowered his eyes.
Kade let go of Michael's sleeve, grabbed Rachel's hands, and shook them, pleading, "Mom, Kade really wants to join, please, say yes."
"Kade." Seeing Kade almost in tears, Rachel softened and reluctantly nodded.
"Great, thank you, Mom!" Kade jumped up happily.
Michael also felt relieved. He thought she wouldn't agree.
Rachel looked at the excited Kade, forced a smile, and asked the manager, "This event won't be recorded and posted online, right?"
"Of course not, it's just an internal event for our restaurant. We never planned to record it." The manager replied.
Rachel felt relieved. "That's good."
As long as Mandy didn't see it.
"Then, sir and Madam, please follow me to register over there." The manager pointed to a temporary stage ahead.
Rachel nodded. "Okay."
She held Kade's hand and followed the manager. Michael walked beside her.
She bit her lip, hesitated, and asked, "Mr. Smith, did you interrupt me earlier to stop me from revealing our true relationship on purpose?"
