Chapter 115 Playing Dead
Michael, wincing from the pain, managed to ask Rachel if she was okay. She shivered and said, "I'm fine."
Michael let out a small sigh of relief, grateful he got there in time to stop something terrible. He couldn't bear to think about what might've happened if he was even a second late.
Just then, Mandy, totally freaked out, tried to sneak out. But as she reached the door, a cold voice stopped her in her tracks, "Mandy, explain yourself!"
Mandy froze and had no choice but to turn around. Avoiding eye contact, she nervously muttered, "Michael, I didn't mean to."
Michael was about to grill her more, but Mandy's eyes were already filling with tears, looking all pitiful. Rachel couldn't take it anymore and snapped, "Cut the act. I'm calling the cops. Plus, I have a recording that proves you wanted to kill me. Get ready for jail!"
Mandy went pale, panic setting in. "No way! How could you have a recording?"
"I knew you'd try something shady, so I came prepared! But I never thought you'd actually try to kill me!" Rachel shot back, furious.
Mandy lost it, tears streaming down her face as she looked at Michael, pleading, "Michael," hoping for some last bit of mercy. But he stayed silent, offering no comfort.
Desperate, Mandy pretended to faint and collapsed to the floor, leaving both Rachel and Michael stunned.
"Mandy!" Michael quickly knelt down to check on her. No matter how he called, she didn't respond. Realizing she might be seriously hurt, he picked her up and told Rachel, "Call the police after Mandy wakes up."
Rachel, however, noticed Mandy's eyelashes fluttering slightly and rolled her eyes. Mandy was totally faking it. She couldn't believe Mandy would go this low!
"Mr. Smith, I think Miss Brown will wake up soon. No need to worry too much," Rachel said calmly, crossing her arms.
Hearing this, Mandy's hand twitched slightly. 'Does Rachel know I'm faking?' she thought.
Michael caught Rachel's drift, looked down at Mandy for a few seconds but saw nothing odd, then asked, "Are you saying Mandy's pretending? Got any proof?"
Rachel smirked, "If you don't believe me, just let go of her. If she's faking, her body will react and she won't really fall."
Mandy's heart pounded. Rachel's plan was brutal, forcing her to wake up. That was harsh!
Michael frowned. "No way. If she's really out, she could get hurt from the fall."
Mandy sighed in relief. Thank goodness Michael wasn't buying it.
Rachel saw the brief relaxation on Mandy's face and sneered, "Since you won't do that, let's try something else."
"What method?" Michael asked. Mandy perked up, listening closely.
"You'll see," Rachel said with a wicked grin, pulling out her phone and tapping the screen as she walked toward them.
Mandy heard the footsteps and panicked. What was Rachel up to? Whatever it was, she had to endure it and not blow her cover.
Rachel walked up to Mandy, placed the phone by her ear under Michael's puzzled gaze, and hit play. A loud noise blasted from the phone, deafening everyone around.
Michael jumped, his body tensing up, almost dropping Mandy. Luckily, he remembered he was holding her and avoided that awkward situation.
To Rachel's surprise, while Michael was visibly shaken, Mandy stayed completely still, eyes closed, as if she were really out cold.
Rachel frowned. Anyone faking it would’ve jumped at that noise. But Mandy held her ground, showing just how determined she was. Rachel had to admit defeat this time.
"Sorry, Mr. Smith, looks like I was wrong. Miss Brown is really unconscious," Rachel said, putting her phone away with a smile.
No point in pushing it further; it would just make her look petty. She had the recording and could call the cops anytime, so no rush.
Mandy let out a silent sigh of relief. Rachel finally gave up trying to wake her. But she made a mental note to get back at Rachel for that prank, twice as hard.
"When Mandy wakes up, I'll call you," Michael said, giving Rachel a deep look. He didn’t blame Rachel for delaying taking Mandy to the hospital because he also thought Mandy was faking. But now he felt a bit guilty for doubting her. He looked at Mandy with a hint of remorse.
"Alright, I'll wait for your call, Mr. Smith," Rachel replied with a smile.
Michael took Mandy to the emergency room. Rachel also needed to see a doctor; her belly was hurting more and more. Just then, her phone rang. It was John. "Rachel, did you see Catherine?" he asked.
"Yeah, I did. What's up?" Rachel asked as she headed toward the gastroenterology department.
John's voice turned serious. "I found out how Ethan got out."
"Oh?" Rachel squinted, gripping the phone tighter.
John snorted, "Ethan got help from someone official. Last night, Mandy went to see Ethan, and then she went to the Green family."
"The Green family?" Rachel pursed her lips, surprised. "The same Green family as the Anderson family, both deputy mayors of Summit Ridge District?"
"Yep," John confirmed. "Mr. Green and Ethan were college buddies."
Rachel sneered, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "I didn't expect the Brown family to have a connection with the Green family, and I certainly didn't expect the Brown family to get involved with officials so easily."
"Exactly," John replied, a hint of disdain in his voice. "First the Garcia family, now the Green family."
But then he laughed, almost gloating. "Rachel, don't you think everyone who sides with the Brown family ends up badly? Chloe, Monica, and their families are prime examples. The Green family will probably be just as unlucky."
Rachel chuckled. "True, but the Green family is different. They're a big deal in this city, much stronger than the Garcia family."
"I don't see much difference." John laughed, his voice carrying a hint of amusement. "You might not know, the mayor of Summit Ridge District is about to be transferred, and both the Green family and the Anderson family want that position. Everyone knows Ethan was arrested, but the Green family still got him out."
"You mean the Anderson family will use this against the Green family?" Rachel's eyes gleamed with intrigue.
