Chapter 28

Rachel wasn't the meek daughter-in-law of the Smith Family anymore, and she was done putting up with Emily's nonsense.

With a fierce look, Rachel grabbed Emily's wrist and shoved her away. Emily, caught off guard, stumbled and hit the floor, crying out in pain and losing her cool completely.

"Mrs. Emily Smith, if you have something to say, just say it," Rachel said coldly, her eyes icy. "But if you lay a hand on me, I won't hold back."

Emily's face twisted in anger. "Rachel, what do you think you're doing?"

Back when Rachel and Michael were married, she had always bowed to the Smith Family's demands, never daring to talk back. But the divorce had changed her. She didn't feel the need to listen to their crap anymore.

"I knew you were just pretending to be nice to Mrs. Catherine Smith!" Emily spat, her fancy blue dress doing nothing to hide her wild, angry look. "When you divorced Michael, you didn't take a dime. What are you up to now? Have you no shame?"

"I didn't take Michael's money," Rachel said, her voice steady as she met Emily's furious gaze. "Then why are you still clinging to my son?" Emily shouted.

With a dramatic flair, Emily pulled out a stack of photos from her bag and waved them at the employees around them. "Look at your boss," she yelled, her voice dripping with spite. "She's shameless! My son has divorced her and has a new girlfriend, but she still won't leave him alone, messing around with my son!"

She handed out the photos to the confused employees before throwing the rest at Rachel. "Look at yourself! Letting Michael carry you into the car—have you no shame?" she barked.

The photos hit Rachel and scattered on the ground. Rachel picked up a couple and saw herself with Michael. She was standing by the car with an umbrella, talking to Michael. Because they were standing close, it looked like she was hugging him. Another photo showed Michael carrying her into the car.

She hadn't expected that someone had secretly taken photos of her and Michael in the parking lot yesterday afternoon.

Emily pointed at Rachel and cursed, "Mandy's father apologized to you about the video, and you still take advantage! You know Mandy likes mangoes, don't you? How dare you have Michael bring mangoes to your company!"

Rachel was momentarily surprised; she hadn't known that Mandy liked mangoes. She had assumed John had sent the box.

"Rachel, I'm telling you, stay away from my son!" Emily mocked unceremoniously. "Six years ago, Michael married you for Mandy. Otherwise, with your status, do you think you're worthy of my son?"

Seeing Rachel's face go pale, Joseph quickly stepped in to mediate. "Mrs. Smith, they are divorced, but they're still friends. There must be some misunderstanding about the photos. Why don't you go back and ask Michael?"

"If she wasn't seducing him, would Michael have carried her into the car?" Emily retorted.

"Maybe Ms. Williams wasn't feeling well, and Michael had no choice but to help her," Joseph said politely. "Mrs. Smith, this is Ms. Williams' company. You're making things difficult for her by causing a scene here."

Emily glanced at Joseph, then looked at Rachel with disdain. She sneered, "Rachel, you're really good at messing around with men. Male models are one thing, but you won't even leave Michael's friends alone!"

Seeing Emily getting more out of line, Rachel calmly picked up a cup of coffee from a nearby desk and splashed it in Emily's face.

The warm coffee splattered onto Emily's face and her beloved dress, making her scream as she hastily grabbed tissues to prevent further damage. "You bitch!"

As Emily lunged at Rachel, the security guards showed up just in time to hold her back.

Rachel calmly set the coffee cup back on the desk. "Mr. Smith is a big name in the business world," she said coolly. "You might want to think twice before you speak. Otherwise, people might think Mr. Smith's mom is an uncultured woman with no manners."

She added, "And this is Skyline Corporation, my company. If you want to see me, make an appointment with the front desk. If this happens again, I'll have my lawyer handle it."

Before Emily could blow up, Rachel told the security guards, "Mrs. Smith is causing a disturbance. Please escort her out."

"Let go of me! I'll kill this bitch!" Emily screamed as the security guards dragged her out, still cursing Rachel.

The employees quickly scattered and went back to their workstations.

"Mr. Anderson, I'm sorry for the scene," Rachel said, brushing off her sleeve and trying to smile. "I'm sorry you had to see that."

Joseph walked her to the elevator, giving her a sideways glance. "I've noticed you've changed a lot since you divorced Michael."

When Michael and Rachel were still married, Joseph had visited the Smith Manor a few times and saw Emily bossing Rachel around like a servant. Rachel always complied meekly, speaking softly.

Today, Rachel had splashed coffee on Emily and scolded her with authority, which surprised Joseph.

"Yeah, I have to thank Michael for that," Rachel said sarcastically.

Because she loved Michael, she had been an obedient wife in the Smith Family for six years, serving the family and enduring Emily's scolding, thinking she could win Michael over and make him love her. But she later realized that everything she did was in vain.

Michael had someone he loved in his heart, and her love was humble and couldn't touch his heart.

"It's good that you're divorced. With a mother like Michael's, no woman would dare marry into his family," Joseph remarked, thinking of Emily's behavior. "It's amazing Michael didn't grow up with a twisted mind."

Then Joseph asked Rachel, "I think Robert is pretty good. When are you two getting married?"

Rachel didn't feel the need to tell Joseph everything since they weren't close, so she replied briefly, "Robert is quite busy. He's on a business trip abroad."

Her reply led Joseph to assume that they were dating. When the elevator reached the first floor, Joseph got a new message on his phone. He glanced at it and turned to Rachel. "Ms. Williams, I have something to take care of. Let's have lunch together another time."

"Okay," Rachel nodded and personally saw him out of the company.

Joseph drove to Golden Time Restaurant, found the private room, and pushed the door open. Seeing that Michael was already there, he mentioned, "Your mom just caused a scene at Skyline Corporation!"

Michael frowned. "What was she doing at Skyline Corporation?"

Joseph sighed, sitting down and pouring himself a cup of coffee. "She saw photos of you carrying Rachel into a car. Someone sent them to her, and she went over to confront Rachel, calling her shameless in front of her employees."

Joseph's voice turned curious. "What's the story here, Michael? Are you trying to get back with Rachel?"

Michael's face tightened. "No, she was caught in the rain yesterday and felt unwell. I was worried she'd have an accident driving, so I offered to take her home. She insisted on finding a driver, though."

"Sure, she can find a driver. You're her ex; what do you care?" Joseph shook his head. "Thanks to you, your mom went off on Rachel, calling her all sorts of names. Her employees were watching, laughing—it was a real mess."

Humble love
