Chapter 43
John raised an eyebrow. "I told the reporters, so how could it be fake? I'll bring some wedding candy tomorrow for you to try, Lily."
"Okay," Lily replied with a smile.
John had always been a jokester since they were kids, and Rachel was used to it. She shook off his hand and walked into the office with a poker face.
"A pot of tea and a cup of coffee, no sugar," John told Lily, then hurried after Rachel. "Once you're done with your tasks, let's talk about the Blue Sky Ventures acquisition. I did some digging this morning."
Lily watched John enter the office, and soon, the door closed, cutting off his voice. She clutched the documents in her hand, her gaze dim.
Inside the office, Rachel's mind was a mess from the previous one-night stand. She struggled to focus on her work while John's words went in one ear and out the other. Frustrated with his nonstop chatter, she eventually kicked him out.
By noon, Rachel had calmed down. She and Michael had been divorced for a long time, and she was single. Even if she slept with a stranger, it was no big deal.
What puzzled Rachel was that she usually had a good tolerance for alcohol. She had even thrown up in the bathroom last night and felt quite sober. How did she end up getting drunk again?
Moreover, she couldn't remember how she met that man or went to the room with him.
Recollecting the note with the number she had torn off this morning, Rachel fished it out of her coat pocket. She searched the number on Facebook and soon received a notification that the request was accepted.
Without waiting, she typed out a message: [We're all adults. Last night was just a game between adults. Forgetting it is good for both of us.]
Immediately after, she conducted a money transfer.
Rachel: [Transferred $88,888.]
At this time, Michael was still at the hospital taking care of Mandy.
He had been very worried when he learned that Mandy was sent to the emergency room last night. After arriving at the hospital, he found out that Mandy was fine, except for a cut on her forehead and minor fractures in both legs, requiring a hospital stay.
Mandy soon woke up, holding his hand, her eyes red and her voice tinged with tears. "Michael, I'm so scared. Can you stay here?"
Michael couldn't bear to refuse, so he had David take Charlotte home while he stayed at the hospital.
In the morning, seeing Mandy still looking pale, he had David bring his computer over to handle work in the hospital room while keeping Mandy company.
By noon, Michael's phone vibrated with a new Facebook message. He opened it and saw it was from his personal Facebook account, guessing that Rachel had added him, so he switched accounts.
Michael had just accepted Rachel's friend request and was thinking about how to bring up last night's incident when Rachel sent a message and then transferred money to him.
Looking at Rachel's message, Michael gradually frowned, his face turning grim.
Suddenly, a news notification popped up at the top of his phone.
Seeing Rachel mentioned in the news, Michael clicked on it impulsively. He found a video of John holding Rachel, clarifying her previous scandal with Robert to the reporters, and high-profilely announcing his relationship with Rachel, not forgetting to mock Michael.
This news, combined with Rachel's drunken ramblings last night, made Michael feel a sense of frustration.
Mandy had just finished a video call with Charlotte and was in a good mood. She was about to ask Michael what he wanted for lunch when she noticed his gloomy expression and instinctively clutched the blanket. She wondered, 'Could it be because of Rachel again?'
Mandy said softly, "Michael, you've been staring at your phone a lot. Are you super busy? Maybe you should head back to the office. I can handle things here."
Michael looked up from his phone. "I'm not busy. I'll stay here with you today."
Mandy smiled. "Okay. What do you want for lunch?"
She pretended to order takeout and opened her phone again, clicking on the news app. After reading the news, she exclaimed, "Michael, did you see the news? Ms. Williams is with John now."
"Yeah, I saw," he responded coolly.
Mandy feigned concern. "Ms. Williams was so insistent on divorcing you, and I felt sorry for her. But now I'm relieved. She's found her happiness. Their wedding might even happen before ours."
Michael muttered, "John isn't right for her."
Mandy was momentarily stunned but quickly smiled. "How could that be? They're childhood sweethearts. Besides, Mrs. Davis has always treated Rachel like a daughter-in-law. John even tells his friends he'd marry her if she asked."
"Michael, are you upset because Ms. Williams has a boyfriend?" Mandy asked cautiously, looking pale and pitiful.
"No," Michael replied coldly.
Whether John was right for Rachel wasn't his concern. Since Rachel had sent a message saying to forget about last night and that he didn't need to take responsibility, he didn't need to care.
Michael walked to the bedside, gently stroking Mandy's hair. "I was just speaking casually. I married Rachel because of you, and there were no feelings involved. You are the woman I need to cherish and love."
He kissed her forehead. "Rest well. You don't want to be in a wheelchair for our engagement, right?"
Mandy immediately shook her head. "Of course not. That would be too embarrassing! Maybe I shouldn't eat lunch. If I lie down without exercising, I won't fit into the dress. What do you want to eat? I'll order for you."
Michael opened his phone and quickly ordered lunch. "You have to eat. I ordered all your favorite dishes."
"Michael, you must be doing this on purpose, trying to make me fat and embarrass me," Mandy whined, playfully hitting him twice, her tone full of coquettishness.
She leaned against Michael's chest, feeling a sense of complete happiness.
Actually, when Michael was asleep early in the morning, Mandy woke up ready to receive the photos the other party had promised to send so she could arrange for the press to release them. Unexpectedly, the other party not only hadn't sent the photos but also had refunded her money.
Fortunately, the audio clip had caused trouble for Rachel. She should thank John.
She said, "Let me see what you ordered." Mandy, in a great mood, took Michael's phone. Her smile froze as she looked at the order details. These were not her favorites.
Michael chuckled, "Surprised? You were in a coma for several years, but you mentioned your likes and favorite foods in our letters. I remembered them. Knowing you like mangoes, I even ordered a mango dessert."
Mandy gritted her teeth secretly. She had burned those letters. Why did he still remember the contents and that pen pal?
She suppressed her jealousy and softly said, "Michael, people's preferences and tastes change. From today on, only remember what I like now, okay?"
Michael didn't think much of it and agreed.
Mandy was satisfied. She looked up at his thin lips, suddenly reached out to hug him, and pulled him down, intending to kiss him.
