Chapter 98 Monica's Arrest

"Thanks, Mandy," Monica sighed, finally feeling some relief as she put the phone down.

After hanging up, Mandy grabbed her keys and headed straight to Smith Corporation.

"Mr. Smith, Miss Brown is here," David announced, knocking on the CEO's office door.

Michael, buried in paperwork, looked up and said, "Let her in."

David nodded and stepped aside.

Mandy walked in, immediately catching a whiff of smoke. She wrinkled her nose, "Michael, have you been smoking?"

Michael gave a slight nod, "Just one."

"Why are you smoking? I can't stand the smell," Mandy pouted, waving her hand in front of her face.

Michael's eyes narrowed a bit, "Can't stand it? Didn't you say you didn't mind before? I remember you even suggested I try menthol cigarettes in a letter. This is that flavor."

Mandy's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her cool and smiled, "That was before. After being in a coma for six years, I can't stand the smell anymore."

Michael found this reasonable, and his doubts faded.

Mandy secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She thought, 'That was close. Almost got caught again. I should've read those letters before burning them to avoid mistakes.'

Regretting her past decisions, Mandy quickly adjusted her mindset. She suggested, "Michael, you should smoke less. It's bad for your health."

"Alright," Michael nodded.

Mandy linked her arm with his and said sweetly, "Michael, you're so good."

Michael lowered his eyes, recalling Rachel's accusations at the press conference. Because of his prejudice against her, he had treated her coldly for six years. Was this really good?

Michael felt a surge of irritation and pulled his arm away, his voice turning colder, "Mandy, I want to know, why did you tell Rachel six years ago that you see me as your brother rather than your boyfriend?" If she had told the truth back then, maybe his attitude toward Rachel would have been different.

As Rachel said, if she had known he was dating Mandy, she would never have married him. But thinking that Rachel might really not have intended to marry him, Michael felt inexplicably uncomfortable.

Facing his questioning, Mandy's eyes flickered. She lied smoothly, "Sorry, Michael, I didn't want this either. It's just that my parents are very strict with me. They don't allow me to date in college, and I was afraid my roommates would tell my parents if they found out. That's why I didn't tell her."

She tugged at his sleeve and said softly, "Michael, don't blame me."

Seeing this, Michael softened, "Forget it, it's all in the past."

"Michael, you're not mad anymore?" Mandy asked, looking up at him.

Michael pressed his lips together and finally replied, "No."

Mandy hugged him tightly, but there was a hint of cunning in her eyes. Actually, what she said back then had nothing to do with her parents. Ethan couldn't wait for her to marry Michael. She just wanted to mess with Rachel.

Back then, Rachel had been about to confess to Michael. She had deliberately said that she saw Michael as her brother, intending to reveal their love relationship when Rachel confessed, which would have made Rachel lose face. But a car accident had interrupted her plan.

Thinking of this, Mandy hated that driver to the core. If it weren't for him, she might have already married Michael.

"Mandy, did you come to see me for something?" Michael asked, gently pushing Mandy away.

Mandy collected her thoughts and began, "It's about Monica. Michael, Ms. Williams is going to sue Monica, can you..."

Michael got the gist and cut her off with a stern look, "I already told you last time, I'm not helping her. Even if she did it for you, wrong is wrong. She's got to face the consequences."

"I know, but I hate seeing Monica like this," Mandy sighed.

Michael patted her head, trying to comfort her, "Don't worry, it's a minor offense. She'll only be detained for a few days at most."

Mandy nodded, "That's all we can do. Monica was too impulsive this time. I hope she learns her lesson."

Michael had made up his mind, and she couldn't stop Rachel's lawsuit alone. It seemed Monica was doomed this time. She could only comfort her after Monica got out of the jail.

Thinking of this, Mandy pointed to a corner of the office and said, "Michael, I'm going to the restroom."

"Okay," Michael nodded.

Mandy walked to the restroom and dialed Monica's number.

Monica, waiting for good news, quickly answered, "Mandy, did Mr. Smith agree?"

Mandy shook her head apologetically, "Monica, Michael didn't agree. I'm sorry, I tried my best."

"How could this be?" Monica's eyes filled with despair, her body swaying, almost fainting. Michael refused to help her. What should she do?

"Monica, you..." Before Mandy could finish, there was a knock on Monica's door.

Monica put down her phone and called out, "Who is it?"

"Maintenance," came the response from outside.

Monica, suspecting nothing, opened the door, only to find two uniformed police officers standing there. She had been tricked!

Realizing they were there to arrest her, Monica's eyes widened in fear, and she instinctively tried to slam the door shut.

The police quickly blocked the door, one of them showing his badge. He said, "Miss Turner, you are under arrest for defamation. Please come with us."

"No, I'm not going anywhere," Monica shook her head frantically, retreating step by step, her voice trembling.

The officers maintained their serious demeanor. "If you resist arrest, the consequences will be more severe."

Panicked, Monica pressed her phone to her ear, her hands shaking. "Mandy, the police are here. Please come and save me, I beg you."

On the other end, there was only silence.

Monica checked her phone and realized the call had already ended. Her heart sank, and she collapsed to the ground, her eyes empty.

The two officers exchanged a glance, then helped her up and took her away.

In the police car, the officer who had shown his badge made a call to Rachel, "Hello, Ms. Williams, we have her in custody."

"Thank you for your hard work," Rachel smiled in gratitude.

After ending the call, Rachel set her phone down on the table. John placed a steaming cup of coffee in front of her and asked, "Who was that?"

"The police," Rachel replied, taking a careful sip of her coffee.

John nodded in understanding. "It's about Monica's arrest, right?"

Rachel nodded slightly, her eyes reflecting a mix of emotions. "Yes."

John couldn't hide a hint of schadenfreude in his expression. "Mr. Turner always wanted Monica to marry into a high-society family. Now, with this scandal, her reputation is ruined, and it might even affect the Turner family business. Mr. Turner will be thoroughly disappointed in her."

"Indeed," Rachel smiled faintly, a sense of satisfaction evident in her demeanor.

Just then, there was a knock on the office door. Lily peeked in, looking slightly hesitant. "Ms. Williams, a lawyer named Nicholas Baker is here to see you."

"A lawyer?" Rachel raised an eyebrow, glancing at John with curiosity. "Did you invite him?"

Humble love
