Chapter 170
Rachel used to watch Michael leave without him ever looking back. Now, it was his turn to watch her walk away. The unexpected heartache of being left behind hit him hard. Michael lowered his head, touching his chest, feeling a deep bitterness.
In the parking lot, Rachel and John arrived at the car. John opened the car door. "Rachel, do you think there's something up with Michael? Why'd he come all the way here to apologize?"
"Who knows," Rachel shrugged and replied lazily as she got into the car.
John also got into the car. "I really don't get what he's thinking."
Rachel smiled. "If you could figure out what he's thinking, you'd probably be as successful as him by now. Alright, let's go, your mom will call to rush us soon."
"Okay." John nodded and started the car.
On the way, Rachel's phone suddenly rang. She opened her eyes, picked up the phone, and a hint of surprise appeared on her face.
John glanced at her from the corner of his eye and quickly asked, "Who is it?"
"Robert!" Rachel said as she answered the call. John pursed his lips and said nothing more.
"Robert," Rachel happily said into the phone.
On the other end, Robert's gentle voice came through. "Rachel, are you free in a few days?"
"Yeah, what's up?" Rachel asked. Recently, her influence in the company had increased significantly, and she didn't have to handle many things personally, so she could naturally make time.
"My work here is almost done. I'll be back in a few days and wanted to ask you out for dinner," Robert replied with a smile.
"Yeah, you've been on a business trip for two months now, it's about time you came back. Call me when you arrive, I'll pick you up at the airport." Rachel readily agreed.
"Okay," Robert responded, then squinted. Although his voice was still gentle, it carried a hint of coldness. "Rachel, how have you been these past two months? Mandy and the others didn't bully you, did they?"
At the beginning of his time abroad, he could still keep an eye on the situation back home, but as work got busier, he hadn't been able to.
Rachel's smile faded. "Don't worry, I'm not easy to mess with. I've already handled it."
"So, they did give you trouble?" The coldness in Robert's eyes grew more apparent.
Rachel smiled. "I'm fine. By the way, it should be night over there, right? Go get some rest."
Seeing that she didn't want to say more, Robert didn't press further. He smirked. "Alright, I'll hang up now. See you in a few days."
"Okay." Rachel nodded and ended the call.
John asked curiously, "Robert is coming back?"
"Yes, he'll be back in a few days." Rachel put away her phone.
John coughed. "I heard you talking about Mandy and the others bullying you?"
"Yes, Robert is quite worried about me."
"Looks like Mandy and the others are about to bein trouble," John said gloatingly.
Rachel looked at him puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing." John shook his head, not wanting to elaborate.
"Really? I feel like you're hiding something from me." Rachel narrowed her beautiful eyes.
John straightened his back. "Trust me, it's nothing."
"Fine." Rachel glared at him and stopped looking at him.
John sighed in relief, feeling pretty smug. With Robert back, Rachel would be safer, and Mandy and the others would be in for it. The thought made John chuckle.
Rachel glanced at him but didn't ask. She put on her headphones and started listening to music.
The next day, a weekend, John took Rachel to the hospital.
At the hospital, Rachel got out of the car and stood at the entrance, staring up at the "Horizon Wellness Hospital" sign for a long time without moving.
John parked the car and came to her side. Seeing her hesitation, he softened his voice, "Rachel, if you're scared, we don't have to go through with this. We can keep the baby."
Rachel withdrew her gaze, shook her head, and said firmly, "No, I want to terminate the pregnancy. I admit I'm a bit scared because I've never had this kind of surgery, but keeping the baby out of fear wouldn't be fair. I don't love this child, and I can't give this child motherly love."
A child should be shared with someone she loved, but this child in her belly was the result of a reckless night. She didn't love the child's father, so how could she love the child?
Moreover, even if she kept the child, the child wouldn't have a father. That man said clearly that he was willing to support the child but didn't want to acknowledge it, so the child would still be an illegitimate child.
So, rather than letting the child suffer in this world, it was better not to let the child come at all. With that thought, Rachel took a deep breath, steadied herself, and walked into the hospital.
John quickly followed. After registering, they headed to the obstetrics and gynecology department.
Not far away, Mandy watched their figures disappear into the elevator. She bit her lip and went to the registration desk. "Excuse me, nurse, which department did Rachel just register for? I'm her friend, and she's been in a bad mood lately, so I followed her here. I didn't expect her to come to the hospital. Please tell me, I'm really worried about her."
Moved by Mandy's worried expression, the nurse checked Rachel's registration and said, "It's the obstetrics and gynecology department."
Mandy's lips curled slightly, but she quickly composed herself, her worry returning. "I see, thank you," she said.
"You're welcome." The nurse waved her hand.
Mandy turned and left, her worried expression disappearing, replaced by excitement.
She took out her phone and called Gregory, "Rachel came to the hospital. I thought she would choose another hospital, but she still came to yours. Gregory, I'll leave the rest to you."
"I got it; don't worry." Gregory smirked.
Mandy put down her phone, and Michael came to her side, frowning slightly. "I told you to wait for me at the hospital entrance. Why did you come here?"
Mandy's eyes flickered, and she smiled. "Sorry, Michael, I saw an acquaintance and rushed over, forgetting what you said. Don't be mad at me." She hugged his arm playfully.
She wasn't lying. While waiting for him at the entrance, she saw Rachel and John, so she quickly hid and then quietly followed them inside.
Unexpectedly, she came here to see a psychologist and happened to run into Rachel and John for a prenatal checkup. Perfect, today she would end Rachel's life to avoid future trouble!
