I sat there with Mark in the office. "Congratulations. I can't believe you are going to be a dad." "Thanks; I don't know how cut out I am for it, though." "Nah, you will be fine. You know Helen is super excited. She says now we can have a baby." "I told you before. You guys didn't need to wait for me to have a child. You could have had one a long time ago." "I know, but we wanted kids the same ages as yours." I smiled. I had hated that they waited for me. I knew Helen wanted a baby really badly. Well, when her heat came later in the year, I knew they would for sure get pregnant.
"So the pack is excited." "I know they have been offering me congratulations since I told them." "They are excited to have the next alpha be born." "You know it could be a girl, right Mark." "Nah, Alphas always have boys first." "Jack didn't." "Jack was not a strong alpha. You will have a son to pass the pack onto." "What if I don't, though, and we can't have any more children." "You are worrying too much. Just live in the present, at least on this."
I nodded. He was right; I had bigger things to focus on. I needed to figure out what Howi's moves would be. If I had known he would attack, I could have prepared better. But there was no way I would ask him if that was his plan. "Cade, all you can do is make sure everyone trains. There is not much you can do besides that." Mark was right. I knew he was. I just wished there was more I could do. We spent the rest of the morning and up until Lunch going over business. Who knew running a pack would be just as grueling as running a business. A multi-billion dollar business.
When we got to Lunch, I didn't see Kaya, nor did I see Robert. I mind-linked Kaya, but she didn't respond. I mind-linked Robert next. "Hey, where are you guys?" "I am in my room. Kaya is in your den. After working with the kids, she said she didn't want to eat and was going to nap." I looked at Helen, who was engaged in a conversation with Kimi. Mark asked me, "Where is Kaya?" "Sleeping." "You should bring her some food for when she wakes up." "Good idea." I got up and had Becky make her a sandwich. I left the table and returned to our den.
I found Kaya passed out on the bed. She had one of our quilts draped over her and looked to be out like a light. There was no way she would be up anytime soon. I understood it. I knew all pregnant females took naps from the very beginning. I crawled into the bed beside her, setting her food on the table beside me. She must have felt me close because she turned and snuggled into my side. I looked at her in a peaceful slumber and wondered when we would be at total peace.
I knew war would come, and I worried it may affect this pregnancy. I tried to think of things to improve the situation, but nothing came to me. Mark had been right the only thing to do was wait. I watched Kaya's chest rise and fall. After an hour, Mark asked me to come back to my office. We needed to go through requests for new buildings. I reluctantly left Kaya. Upon exiting, I began to wander back to the office. I would spend the remainder of the day until evening training in the office. This was the routine most days.
After a few hours, Kaya mind linked to me. "Thank you for the Sandwich. You are coming to training in an hour?" "Yes, of course. How did the food sit." "I will tell you in a bit. I got it down okay despite the taste of it; I just wasn't feeling too great after I ate. But my mom said the nausea passed after two weeks. So I only have one more week." "That is good." "Yeah, and I decided I would take the vitamins." I smiled. I was glad she agreed." "What are you doing now?" "Oh, some people were having a dispute, so Robert and I are on our way to work out the problem." "Okay, well, I will see you at the arena then." "Yes, I will be the one teaching the little kids to kick ass." I laughed.
"What, them throwing knives is not enough?" "Hey, that is a useful skill. Just wait until I teach them to skin an animal." I couldn't help but smile. "Hey, I was wondering, do you have a book on local plants?" "I am sure I have one somewhere. Why?" "I would like to know what we can eat around here as far as foraging goes." "Yeah, I don't think you will find much in the way of vegetation this time of the year." "No, I want to read up before spring." "I can see if I can find something." "Thank you. Also, maybe when the season is right, we can go fishing?" "That can be arranged."
I was glad that Kaya asked questions like this. I knew that meant she was settling into livening here long term. I hoped it meant that she really did not miss the North as she did when she first got here. I still could not believe it had been months since she came here. My pack had changed so much since I brought her here. They all knew sign language and could communicate easily with her. We had developed a closer community here at the Shadow Pack. I could not be happier. Nieva had been right; Kaya had made an excellent Luna. I haven't seen the pack so delighted.
Mark looked at me and smiled. He had to know I was talking to Kaya. My mood had improved as well, having her here. I was calmer and in a better mood all the time. Everyone could see it.
