Cade

Kaya had been excited for all morning. We were going back to the mountains for snowboarding. She tried to explain to her friends what we were doing, and all four seemed excited beyond belief. Mark and Helen were excited; we had not gone snowboarding since last year. A lot of the pack went on the weekends when the season opened.

It had been a pastime for a lot of the pack. Unfortunately, we had no ski resorts on pack lands, so anyone who liked playing on the slopes had to leave. I had warned everyone that they needed to be careful when leaving the lands. They were not permitted to leave the pack by themselves. Kaya was practically bouncing as we loaded into the Van.

We were not taking one of the SUVs as we had more than five with us. We loaded up the Van. It fit eight comfortably and the three boards. We all pilled in Kaya sitting up front with me. Kaya looked to be having a conversation. I am sure she was talking to one of her friends in the backseat. Mark said, "Dude, today will be so much fun." Helen seconded it.

Len asked me, "So, is snowboarding hard?" "It can be difficult when you first begin. Then again, Kaya told me she thinks you guys will take to it well. I mean, really, all it takes is balance." Saka added, "Oh, we have balance." I smirked. The northerns probably would take to it like a fish in water. The snow was their home. Even in the summer, they dealt with snow. It was always cold where they lived. It was why they had no problem wearing shorts during the training.

Jack had wanted to come, but I told him no. I hoped he would not get into trouble while I was away. He didn't seem too happy to be left behind. But he had told Kaya he hoped she had fun. Somehow, I could not picture him on the slopes, but he said he could ski. But I couldn't imagine him having any kind of fun. I had made sure our room was extra guarded.
"I wish we could have brought Robert." Kaya mind linked. She had grown attached to him, and it was understandable he was always with her. She thought of him as a friend, and I understood. He had studied hard to become fluent in both her language and sign language. I would have brought Robert if I thought we would need her protected, but we needed our den more protected in our absence. He insisted on taking guard over our room. So I let him guard it along with a few other warriors.

"I know, love, but you are in no danger where we are going, and our den needs to be protected while we are not there." I mind-linked her. "Still, he deserves some fun." "If you like snowboarding next time you go, you can bring Robert." She smiled. I would be jealous of their friendship if I was unsure that Kaya loved me. Not to mention, I knew Robert was still mourning for his mate. He never said anything about her. At least not to me, but you could see it in his eyes. He still missed her.

"Love, do you think today will be a good day for snowboarding?" she mind-linked me. "Well, it is supposed to snow this evening, so the day should be good and clear, at least until it gets dark." Kaya looked so happy. I flicked the radio on and turned it up loud so Kaya could feel the vibrations. Mark mind linked me. "Does the music have to be so loud, Cade?" "Kaya needs it loud so she can feel the vibrations." I looked in the mirror to see him nod.

When we got to the resort. Kaya practically jumped out of the Van. I led the group into the resort, where they would need to get rentals. I noticed some people looking at Kimi and Kaya. Both stood out with their facial tattoos. Len and Saka stood out with their long black hair, but they did not have tattoos on their face, so fewer people looked at them. All four of them were wearing their hair in braids, a set of two down their back. I rented everything needed for the four of them. Mark, Helen, and I planned on teaching them on the small hill.

"Come on," I told them, grabbing Kaya's hand. First things first was getting on the boots and getting a handle on balance. "This is cumbersome," Saka said as his boots fitted into the board. "You get used to it," Mark said. Helen added, "Your feet must be strapped in; otherwise, you could fall off the board." Len nodded at them. All four of them were wobbly at first, but on the third time down the small hill, they were experts. They just had to find their balance and figure out how to move when they couldn't move their feet.

"I want to take on the bigger runs." Kaya mind linked. "You think you're ready." "I was born ready." I smiled at her. We all rode the lift up to one of the medium slopes, and Len and Kimi jumped off, followed by Saka. The three of them waited for no one when they reached the top of the run and leaned forward, taking off down the slope. Helen and Mark followed them. Kaya looked at me, and I signed, "Let's go." Kaya leaned forward, and after her, so did I, and we were sliding down the mountain.

Kaya never wobbled. She rode the slope like she had been doing it her whole life. Her hands pumped in the air, and I heard someone howling. Kaya answered the call. "This was not the place to do this around humans. I mind-linked Kaya. "You can't howl around humans." "Like they will know it is us, nor will they care. They will just think we are being funny." I knew this was playing with fire. But, I could not command her not to howl nor her friends; I was not their alpha. Kaya mind linked. "Cade, my friends did it before they got to the bottom, they told me. The humans won't know who or what howled." I let out a sigh of relief.

When we reached the bottom, I looked over at Kaya, who was beaming. Her friends were waiting for us all with huge smiles plastered on their faces. Kaya grabbed my arm, getting my attention. She signed, "Next to being with you, this is the most fun I have ever had in my whole life." I smiled at her. We found something she liked more than hunting, which up until now had been her favorite thing besides me. I was glad that she was so happy.
