"Robert, do you hate watching me?" I mind-linked Robert. I had been curious about this. He had been watching over me for a while now, and I wanted to know how he felt about it. When Cade told me I needed a guard, I thought it was ridiculous. I still did, but I was curious about his feelings. "It is an honor to be the Lunas' guard." "But it is all you do. Don't you find it boring?" "No, you talk to me a lot, so it is not like I have no one to talk to. Not to mention, you almost always have someone around you to converse with. I am getting to learn to hunt being with you all the time, and I am learning sign language, and your friends are teaching me your native tongue; I have not found anything too boring yet."
"Well, that is good, I guess," I said over the mind link. I wanted to ask about his mate but didn't know if it would be painful for him to talk about. He must have read my face. He signed, "You want to ask me something." I nodded. "Ask." "Your mate, Cade, told me she died because of a bear?" "Yes, we were young, and she loved to go pick wildflowers. It was in the spring when the bears came out of hibernation, and she was attacked." I nodded. I mind-linked, "I understand bears are hard to kill. I almost died at thirteen fighting one." His face went pale.
"You survived a bear when you were thirteen." "Yes, it was my first solo hunt, and it came out of nowhere, and we fought." "I wish our pack could do what yours do; maybe Beth would still be alive." "Well, I plan to start teaching hunting to the pack when the tournament is over." "That would be good. I have seen you and your friends hunt. You work as a unit. It is very impressive. Our pack has a lot of pride, but we don't do much pack stuff together other than the occasional BBQ." "Yeah, I am determined to do pack runs once a week." "We need that."
I smiled at him. Robert was a huge man. Very burly, he reminded me of a bear. His black hair was curly and fell to his shoulders. His massive arms were covered in thick black hair. His wolf was also significant but dark brown. "Have you ever prayed to the Goddess for a second chance, mate?" "No, I don't want another one. Beth was it for me, and I want it that way." I understood. That is how most people in the north felt when their mate died. They didn't want another one.
"So Robert, do you know anything about George?" I wanted to know about the guy who had tried so hard to win the endurance challenge for our pack. He was so determined. "I don't know much about him, Luna, to be honest. I only know he is a warrior." "I want to find out more about him. I feel like he should be rewarded in some way." His face looked like he was thinking. "You may speak freely to me," I said over the link. "Luna, why do you need to reward him? He was just trying to win for our pack. I told you we have a lot of pride, and anyone who thought they could have won that challenge would have participated to bring glory to Shadow Pack."
"I just think he went past his limit. I gave him some encouragement, and it helped him keep going, I think, longer than he wanted to." "Well, you are the Luna, and cheering us on makes us want to improve." I smiled at him. "He thought I would hate him if he quit." I watched as Robert laughed. "You would not hate anyone in this pack." He linked. "Anyone who has seen you with the pack would know that. You may be harsh, but you are not hateful."
I was taken aback. "I am harsh?" "Oh yeah, the way you slapped that kid around during training, embarrassing him, that was harsh." "That kid deserved it. He was out of line. Someone has to teach him not to disrespect who is in charge." "I am not saying it was wrong, just that it came across as harsh but effective. It is good you are harsh; if we are ever going to be as tough as the northers, we need that." "You think Shadow Pack wants to be like the North?" "I don't know what the others want, but I sure as hell do. I have seen how you and your friends are. I have never met such hardy wolves; you all are completely self-reliant, not to mention you seem to always be at ease. I attribute it to feeling good with the Goddess." "That feeling of reassurance is from the Goddess. You are correct."
"I started to pray to her, you know." I smiled. I was happy he was talking with her. My soul always felt lighter when I spoke to the Goddess. Just then, I got a mind link from Cade. "Cresent Moon won. I am having to take your friends to the clinic." I linked back "What happened?" "Daybreak pack ripped into them good. Kimi got into a fight once she crossed the finish line; let's just say it was not pretty and a lot of blood." "Well, are they okay?" "They said they will be fine, but I want them to get checked out." "Cade, they won't like your doctors. They are used to healers."
"I know that, but it is still best to get them checked out." "You know we heal faster than the south." "I know your recovery from Jack was faster than the doctor said it would be." "What are their wounds?" "Bites and deep lacerations." "My Goddess, they will be fine. If they have no broken bones, they will be just fine. You don't need to drag them to the clinic." "I am still taking them." "Waste of time, but okay." I dropped the link with Cade and contacted the wolf I had talked to to strategize before the latest challenge.
"Luna, we lost. I am sorry." "It is okay; no one got our flag, right?" "No, they didn't even suspect it." "Well, then I take that as a win. But what did happen? I am curious?" "I can't speak for other packs, but for us, we located the sunrise pack flag. It was high up a steep rocky incline. We got it, but the rocks made the climb treacherous. Climbing up there was slow going and perilous. We finally got it and were heading back when Dawn Pack decided to fight us over the flag; they wanted it."
"Margret couldn't shift. She had the flag, so the fight was about protecting her and keeping the flag. During the fight, the alarm sounded, and the challenge was over." "Well, you did great, and I am happy you protected Marget. It was more important than anything. But, are all of you okay?" "Yeah, just a few cuts here and there from Claws." "Good, I am glad I am in the kitchen with Robert; if you want a drink, feel free to join us." "Thanks, Luna." He waited a second, then linked me again. "We are coming now." I looked at Robert and signed. "We have company coming."
