I sat there in the office with both Mark and Kaya. Charlie would be here any minute. Then we would have a better idea of what was happening or, at the very least, know what happened to his pack that no longer existed. Kaya was sitting down, her feet up on the little table. Her legs had swollen up again. She had been on them too much. I was honestly worried about the preeclampsia. We were able to go to the doctor earlier as Charlie and the rest of his group had slept most of the day.
The doctor was concerned that her blood pressure was so high. He said the swelling would worsen and that she needed to pull back more. She was not happy with this news. But I knew she would do what she could to improve the situation. No one she had grown up with had this much swelling so early in their pregnancy, and though she tried to act like she was not worried, I could see past that. I knew she was more concerned than she let on.
The doctor said the swelling would get worse and probably not just stay in her legs. I was sure it had been the drug that had caused this. I mean, she was healthy and young; there had been no reason for that drug to be administered to her to induce her heat. Now, she was having problems with the pregnancy. She was wearing a dress today, and I could tell she was tired. Today, she had trained the kids in high school about skinning an animal, and I knew that meant a lot of bending down and lifting. She had not hunted the animal; she left that to Saka, Len, Kimi, and Robert, and the group she had been teaching.
But she had been the one to instruct on how to go about prepping the animal for the eating. She distributed the meat and ensured everyone in the group got some of the meat. Still, she herself had only brought home some steak of the animal. There had been an abundance of meat in the pack. In the last few months, most of the pack had switched their diets to primarily game meat and wild birds. Kids as young as five had been taught to build a bow, and they took every opportunity to shoot down birds and other small animals.
The teenagers seemed to love to eat raw meat, which Kaya said was normal. Teenagers, she had told me, loved the hunt. Which was normal where she came from. But, with all that she had been doing, I could see it was building on her. Her body was struggling to keep up. That was not just my opinion; the doctor had told both of us she needed to pull back, rest more, and stay off her feet as much as possible. I didn't know how she planned to do that, but looking at her swollen legs as she had them up, I had to agree with the doctor.
I would need to have a talk with her and one in private with Robert. I could strategize a way with Robert to ensure she sat down more. He could encourage that. When Kaya and I talked, we would figure out a way for her to step back. On top of teaching, she walked all over the place to work out problems between people. I knew that was a lot of walking. But that was her duty as a Luna, so I didn't know how to minimize that. Mark looked at Kaya and signed. "How are you feeling today, Luna?" "I am fine, thanks for asking." She was not okay.
Mark shot me a look after I saw his eyes roam over her swollen legs and feet. At the end of the day, she could not wear shoes because her feet got so swollen. Mark mind linked me. "What did the doctor say. You guys had an appointment today, right?" "He said she needs to cut back on things and try to stay off her feet as much as possible. Her blood pressure is getting really high." He nodded. I knew he was concerned. Kaya had not wanted me to tell the pack about how hard the pregnancy was. She didn't want to seem weak. I don't know why she thought anyone would think she was weak, though.
Kaya was anything but that. I wanted to tell the pack so they would cut her a break and not expect so much from her, but she had been adamant that it would only be known to Mark, Helen, Kimi, and Robert. I was surprised she didn't let Saka or Len in on the fact she was struggling. But her reason was she didn't want them to keep things from their mates, and she didn't want the pack to know, and now they were the pack. Her family was all aware of what was going on. Hell, she mind-linked her mother every day to keep her updated.
Nieva had been concerned about Kaya as well. But she was always concerned with her pack. I called her every week with an update on the whole Howi situation. The conversations were brief as there was nothing to report, but now, with Charlie and what had happened, I knew she would want to know everything, and I planned on telling her. Maybe she would like to send some people down to help us for when the inevitable happened, and Howi attacked us. There was a knock on the door, and Kaya quickly put her feet down from where they had been resting.
I knew she would not want Charlie to know about her condition. He was now part of the pack; she would not let him in on the secret. "Come in." Charlie opened the door and walked in. He looked better rested than he had when he arrived but still saddened. He looked at me first, then Mark, and then his eyes saw Kaya. He looked down at her round stomach, which was clearly visible in her dress. He looked back at me and raised his eyebrows. "Congratulations, Alpha." "Thank you, and no need to call me alpha when you are not in a position to have to." He smiled and took a seat across from Kaya next to Mark.
I moved and sat down next to Kaya. My hand took her small one. It felt off, though. I briefly looked down and saw that it was a little swollen. It's not as bad as her legs or feet, but it's still a little puffy. I moved my eyes quickly, trying not to draw attention to it. It was like the doctor said the swelling would be getting worse, and it already was. Charlie went to speak, but I held up my hand, and he instantly stopped. "Charlie, I want to hear what you have to say, but I ask that you look at Kaya when you speak. She will read your lips. Also, know that since you are part of Shadow Pack now, you and the others who joined the pack will need to learn sign language. We will have someone work with you." "Okay."
