22. Kaya

Cade entered my thoughts. "Kaya." He mind linked. "Cade.” "Are you okay?" "I am fine." I lied. I didn't want to show how upset I was over what the girls had said. After all, the situation made me feel stupid for letting it get to me.
"Kaya, it is okay if you are upset. I don't know what was said, but I think you are beautiful and love your tattoos." I could feel the sides of my mouth turn up. His words helped calm me down a bit. I was still upset about the event, but I would have to learn to get used to being an outsider down south. They were so different, and I needed to recognize that. I mind-linked Cade again to pull my attention away from my hurt feelings.
"So, what are you up to." "First day of warrior tryouts." "Oh, what is the first day, and why is the tryout? Is not everyone a warrior?" "Yes, everyone has some sort of training, but only some are warriors. Protecting the pack is a full-time job and a great honor. As today is the first day, we focus on endurance. We run them till the first ten drop out, or if I think all of them are worthy, I go to the next test." "That is interesting."
That was very different from the customs of the north. We trained most days, all of us, even the children who didn't have their wolf. There were exceptions. I had not trained while Cade, Helen, and Mark were there. Also, when we got a whale, we didn't train as it was a hands-on-deck situation. If they were out on a whale hunt, the men would not train either. But we were all warriors.
"I am guessing that is not the way in the north?" "No, it isn't." "Well, are you having a good time with Helen? Did you get everything you need?" "Yeah. It has been a long day. But yes, it has been nice to be out with Helen."
I thought about it for a second. If I wore more clothes like the people in the south, my new pack would find me more approachable. At least my clothes would not be so different from their own. I can't imagine what those girls could have said if I wore my handmade buckskin garments.
"Well, I am glad you are having a fun time. Will you be back soon?" "Yeah, I think so." "Good. I will see you soon, although you may have to come to the arena. Depending on how long this takes, Mark and I may need to take turns watching the recruits." "Oh, alright." I had to admit the idea he may not be sleeping next to me tonight rubbed me the wrong way. But I knew the obligation he had.
"So, will you be busy with the people testing those who want to be pack warriors for the next few days?" "Yeah, so it depends on how long the first group lasts. If it takes a long time and I give them all the chance to move on, they will have a break, seeing we have a pack BBQ the day after tomorrow."
The BBQ. I wondered how I could help. I came up with an idea. "Cade, has the meat already been bought." "No, I was going to send someone to go out and get it." "I was wondering if I could get the meat." "Sure, if you want to." I smiled. I wondered if he knew I planned on hunting for it. I smiled at the prospect of providing for my new pack. I can help make sure you are fed. I could bring Helen with me.
Yes, that seemed like a good plan. After all, she was supposed to help me get things done. This was something she could help with. "Oh, okay, well, I will let you get back to it." We cut off the mind link. Helen looked at me and smiled. She knew who I had been communicating with. I am sure she had told him I was upset. But having him in my head did help a lot, and I no longer felt agitated or upset by the girls.
Helen had us return to the car and begin trekking back to the pack's territory. I mind-linked her about going with me tomorrow. She seemed reluctant but agreed as long as we took a gamma. I figured the more, the merrier. As we drove, Helen's mind linked with me. "So, what do you think of this place so far?" "It is different but not bad." "What are some things that would make it easier for you."
I thought about it for a second. "Well, for starters, the bed inside our room is way too soft." "We could always get you a new mattress. Anything else." "I guess you guys could have more meat around." "That is doable."
"I guess about other stuff, I will have to see. I have not been here that long." "That is true." "Hey Helen, can I ask you something." "Sure." "Why don't you and Mark have any kids?" "Oh, we have been waiting." It was something new to me. The way I was brought up was that you had kids as soon as you could once you found your mate. So, waiting was an abstract thought. I had to wonder, though, what were they waiting for. "So why have you been waiting?"
"Well, we wanted our kid to be around the same age as the alphas, seeing as our kid would most likely be the beta of the next alpha as Mark was Cades." I wondered if a female could be a beta, as Cade had told me only males were alphas. If that were the case, I wondered what would happen if they had a girl and we had a boy. Would their daughter be my son's beta? It all seemed so convoluted.
Helen mind linked me again. "Do you think you all will be waiting to have children?" "It is my custom to have children as soon as possible. But I wonder if Cade wants to uphold that tradition. But I am fine, not waiting. I didn't expect to wait. When my heat comes, as long as Cade is willing, we will have babies immediately." It was not usual to not get pregnant on your heat; it could happen, but it was uncommon. If you had sex with a female wolf when she was fertile and didn't stop yourself from shooting your seed, she would become pregnant. It was as simple as that. I looked over to see Helen smiling.
"What made you so happy all of a sudden?" "Just the idea we may not be waiting long. Please talk to Cade and let me know so I can decide if we will have a baby this year when my heat comes. "Yeah, I can talk with him as soon as possible." I was glad that Helen wouldn't have to wait anymore. At least, I hoped not; that depended on Cade. I just felt terrible that she had waited this long if she wanted to have kids sooner. It seemed wrong for them to wait if they wanted kids.
