I sat there, not knowing if Cade could get here in time. I ran to the border when I heard that Howi was close. I had some of the few remaining wolves keeping watch at the border since Cade left. I knew there was no way to talk him out of leaving. He had lost it when Howi threatened Sol. I wanted to tell him it was a trap. Howi had to know Cade would get sloppy. He had been right.

I refused to leave us unprotected. We needed more wolves in our lands to protect against Howi and his forces. I had been preemptive and decided to take some of the things I had been reading about. Land mines they had been effective in wars among humans. I had some made. That was the easy part, but we couldn't make too many with the time we had. We buried them. The remaining wolves knew where we placed them to avoid them or remove them when the time came.

But when a few went off, it scarred Howi. He had no idea we had so few. It was enough to hold him off for now, but I didn't know for how long. Howi himself would never cross into our lands if he didn't think he would survive. If he knew there were only a few that had not gone off, he would push his forces in and still have the bulk of his people alive, and they would crush us.

Seeing the size of the people he had acquired alarmed me. I didn't know if we would win this fight. He outnumbered us not by any small margin either. Cade was now on his way, and I hoped it would be enough. I didn't sleep. If Howi did enter our lands, I needed to figure out what to do. I could not have Sol here. I needed to get her out of here. I mind-linked Robert; he had not left my side in days, and he had taken to sleeping in the hallway before my door while Cade was gone.

"Robert, we need to have a serious discussion." He looked at me concerned. "If Howi breaks through, you need to take Sol." "I won't leave you, Luna." I gave him a small smile. I knew he wouldn't leave me if he could help it. "I need you to take her. She is the future of this pack, and she needs to survive." "But Luna," I cut him off over the link. "I command you to take her to the North." He looked at me, surprised. "Eventually, Crescent Moon will come back. They can't and won't stay away forever, and even if they never do. I have taught you to survive. You will take her and raise her as if she was your own."

"Luna, she needs you; if things get bad, you will leave with me." I just shook my head. "I am Luna of this pack, and I need to do my job and fight for them, and if I have to die again, then so be it." "Kaya." "No more of this. You will take Becky with you. She will be of help, and I trust the two of you." I looked down at Sol, who I was holding in my arms, and kissed the top of her head. I didn't know what was to come, but I knew things would get bad.

"When the fighting starts, you will make it out, do you hear me. You will take Sol to safety, and if you feel me die over the pack link and you feel Cade die, you go with no hesitation." He nodded. I could tell he didn't want to, but what other choice did he have? I had commanded him, and he was bound to me and would do as I instructed him to do.

Robert followed me to my room. I needed to put Sol down for a nap. She was at the point where I didn't have to feed her every two hours. I decided to nap with her taking a nap since I still was not getting a lot of sleep. I was stressed beyond belief, not knowing when Cade could get back. I knew it was going to take a few days. I had only mind-linked him an hour ago, and he was on the other side of the country.

He would have to run back. The pack had run there as wolves, and if they shifted, they would be without clothes and would not be able to be around the humans if they were naked. I had to just wait and hope for the best. If Howi attacked us now, we would be crushed. There was barely anyone here in the lands, and with all this going on, I had a hard time napping.

I had just fallen asleep when the ground shook slightly. I sat upright right away. Howi had to have sent people over the border, and they had hit a mine. There was no other shake. He had not crossed. There was no alarm over the link. This would not be the end. At least not yet. I closed my eyes and sent up a prayer to the Goddess. I asked her to help us if she could. I pleaded with her. "Goddess, please help us. Please protect my family and pack; please let us defeat Howi."

There would be no sleep for me. I decided we needed to make more minds and place more, but this time inside the pack lands. We needed to hold them off if they crossed over. I carried Sol on my chest as the people remaining in the pack, and I pitched in. Digging holes, setting mines, and traps. This would be it. This would be our stand against Howi, and if Cade couldn't make it in time, I knew what I had to do. I had to be the one to go after Howi.

I would have to kill him. The Goddess commanded me to take him out, and I would do it by her. If I had to die again to do it, so be it. I had been charged with the job of making sure he was gone. He wanted everyone who followed the Goddess dead, and Selen did not like that. She had brought me back not just to stop him but to help unite the North and South. But that would never happen while Howi was alive.
