71. Cade
Cade
Kaya had just left with her friends and Robert to go hunting. Mark came into my office. "So, what do you get for me?" "I don't even know where to start." "Let's start with Howi. Were his parents a good Alpha and Luna?" "That is the thing: he was not the next in line for alpha. From what I gathered, he was kind of like an adoptive son to them, and since both they and their son died, he took over as alpha." "But even if that is the case, Mark, he was raised by them. He should resemble their mannerisms."
"Howi didn't come to live with them until he was 13. He showed up and was an exceptionally strong fighter. They took him in due to just how trained he was at a young age. He and their son John became best friends. They trained together, hung out, did everything together like how we were." "Okay, but that is not weird. I mean, people do tend to form close bonds."
"The thing is, it was weird how John died. His parents they died in a strange attack. Then John himself was acting weird, and then suddenly he died, and Howi took over." "What do you mean the previous Alpha and Luna died in a strange attack?" "They were out together doing a check on the boundaries. They usually did this together; the alpha and the luna were very close and did just about everything together. But while they were out, they were attacked by an animal." "An animal, so not a strange way to die. We have some of our own killed by moose and bear." "Yeah, but both of them died. The wounds didn't say bear or gorged by elk or moose; they said wild wolf. The pack assumed it was a pack of wild wolves."
"Okay?" "There were no rogues in the area, and even if there were, the alpha could have fought it off." "Okay, so what are you thinking?" "Well, who do we know who can fight an alpha and at least come out on equal terms?" I sat there. "Kaya can." "Yup, and she is from the north and not an alpha bloodline. What would have happened if she fought Jack and had alpha blood." "She would have won." "Yep." "So, you are thinking Howi is from the north?" "I think it is plausible. He came when he was 13. When kids in the north do their first solo hunt. He also is shorter than most. His skin and hair are the same as the northern minus keeping it long."
"Okay, tell me what happened to John, the wolf that took over after the deaths of his parents." "This what is strange, he got sick." As werewolves, we did not get sick usually. At least there was nothing we could not fight off. If a woman was with a child, she may have sickness, but it was not like we got the flu or anything. "Yeah, Cade, he got sick and suddenly too. Howi was his beta and seemed to call every person he could to figure out what was wrong with him. But they couldn't find out, and at dinner one night, he just dropped dead. It was fast; he got sick six months after he became alpha, and, in a month, he was dead of a mysterious illness."
"Did others get sick in the pack?" "Yeah, loads, many died fast, though it usually didn't take a month. The pack was so concerned about it that they wrote to several other packs telling them about an illness that affects our kind. That is how I found this part out. But once the alpha died, the sickness only lasted for another two months, and then poof, it was gone." "That is strange." "I know. Well, anyway, when John died, some of the pack wanted Howi, but most wanted another guy. They eventually fought over it, and Howi won, becoming alpha."
I sat there looking at him. James had done a great job getting this information. "They have not done anything shady since Howi has become alpha?" "No, nothing strange. From what I understand, they have been peaceful." Just then, I got a call. "Hold on, Mark." He nodded. I picked up the phone. "Hello, this is Alpha Cade." "Cade, my boy, I heard you turned down my invitation." "Jack, yes, sorry, someone really hurt my mate, and we are staying here." "Hurt her. Oh my, how did that happen." He actually seemed concerned. How had he gone from hatred to caring about Kaya?
"It does not matter what happened. We won't be leaving for a long time." I told him. "I understand." This was so unlike Jack to be this understanding.
"It is just that I had a favor to ask of your mate." "Kaya owes you nothing." "I know, but we still have an alliance, and I wanted her help with something." "And what is that?" "I wanted to see if she could help train some of my men. She is so gifted she could really help my pack." "Jack, she is not yours to help improve your pack. She is our Luna, and you will not have her fill that vacant place in your pack just because we are allies." Jack was silent.
"Fine, if you want it to be like that." "Like what that is the way it is. She is my mate, not yours. She is Shadow Packs Luna, not Black Night Packs Luna. She will not be advising or teaching or doing anything for you guys unless we go to war, as that is what an alliance is all about." "Cade, you know alliances are more than being there for each other during a war. It is a relationship. We help one another." I paused for a moment.
I said, "Oh, that is how it is. I am now confused about what you have done for me lately. I mean, I found your daughter a mate. I hosted a tournament in her honor." "Cade, you broke our agreement that was part of your penance. " "Goddess Jack, she is not going to help your pack. If you want something else, we can talk about it." I needed him if we went to war. He had the numbers. But I was starting to get tired of the man and even wondering if our alliance was worth it.
