17. Cade
Cade
I had pulled out some chicken and some salad. Once warmed up, I served up the plates. I also got two cokes out of the fridge. Kaya looked down at the food. I picked up my fork and began to eat. She took her fork and poked at the food. She gobbled up the chicken but didn't touch the greens.
"You don't like salad?" "Umm, I prefer to eat meat." It hadn't occurred to me that she may have never had a salad, seeing as the diet of people in the north is primarily fish, caribou, moose, and some bear. I am sure there is more meat, but I had only heard them talk about wild potatoes, mushrooms, and onions, and I assumed that was only in the summertime. "No problem."
Just then, Helen walked into the kitchen. She looked at the two of us. “Cade, maybe Kaya would like to get some new clothes?" I looked at Kaya. She sipped the coke and made a face like she wanted to spit it out. I mind-linked her. "There is a cup in the cupboard by the fridge if you want water from the facet."
She moved around to get the cup. I looked again at Kaya. She was wearing her moccasins and her buckskin clothing. I didn't want to overwhelm her, but it could be a good idea for her to blend in more.
She may feel more comfortable if she doesn't stand out as much. She would always be distinctive, though. She had that crown tattoo on her forehead. It was endearing. Helen began to speak again.
"Alpha, at the very least, she needs personal hygiene stuff. She can't use the same means she did in the north for hygiene. I mean, where she will get charcoal to brush her teeth twice a day. We don't have fires going at all hours of the day."
I knew she was right. She was a good beta female. She tried her best to help with the pack when she could, but her primary duty was to assist the Luna. Since we haven't had a Luna since my mother, her job has been somewhat obsolete.
"I think that would be a good idea." Helen then went over to Kaya, who was now gulping down water. I knew she was telling Kaya about going shopping tomorrow. Kaya then mind-linked me. "Cade, Helen said you would pay is that true. I don't want to impose." "Yeah, don't even worry about money. I have plenty to go around. And it is our money now. Go, have fun with Helen tomorrow. She knows what you need, so I would heed her advice." "Okay, if you insist."
She looked back at Helen. I assume they were coordinating about tomorrow. I then got a mind link from one of my Gammas. "Alpha Jack called again. He said he will just show up if he doesn't hear back by tomorrow."
Oh, great, now, I have to deal with Annalise's father, Jack. He said I had till tomorrow, so I decided to make that call while the girls were out. I knew he wanted to discuss what happened with his daughter. I knew this conversation was inevitable. He was going to complain about his daughter being harmed. He would be mad that I had found my mate, and I didn't want to deal with his bull shit. But we were allies, and that could not be ignored.
"Thanks, Joey. I will call him tomorrow." Joey was a good Gama. He was young, but he did his job well. Helen left the kitchen, and it was just the two of us again. Kaya mind linked me. "I can't believe you drink that." "What, the soda?" "Yeah, that is nasty." I chuckled a bit. "Maybe it is an acquired taste. "
"Whatever the case is, I will stick with the water, I think." She pulled out her pipe. She had brought back some sheesh. Not a lot, but some. "Hun, you can't smoke inside." "What?" "Yeah, sorry." She then got up and exited the room. I ran after her. I followed her out to the back area behind the house. I faced the woods. She then sat down on the grass. She then looked around. I couldn't help but wonder what she was doing.
"What are you doing? What are you looking at?" "It just occurred to me you don't have a fire going to light this." "Hold on." I then ran back to the packhouse. Finding the matches takes me only a short time, and I run back out. I see Kaya is nowhere to be seen. I follow her scent into the woods. There, I see her building a fire.
"Kaya." "Yes." "I got some matches." "What?" "Matches, you know, to light a fire." "Why would I need something to light a fire? I know how to do it." "It will be faster than building a fire." "It only takes a minute after I set up the sticks." "Yeah, but you only came out to have the sheesh. Just come on, try the matches." "Fine."
I could tell she didn't see the point, but I knew this would be better than building a fire and waiting for it to die out. I used a match and showed her how it worked. Then I blew it out so she could do one herself. She copied what I did and lit her pipe. She sat down on the ground. I followed suit, and we sat silently for about half an hour. She had passed me the pipe, and I also smoked some sheesh. In truth, it was really calming.
We went back up to the room. Where Kaya stripped out of her clothes. She crawled into the bed. But seeing her toned, curvy, tan body was too much. I had to touch her. I had to be inside her. She must have felt the same as she began to kiss me. Our hands roamed over one another things escalated quickly.
