Kaya was so tense while I washed her back. I could see all the bite marks down her tan skin. She still looked beautiful, but I knew she had to be self-conscious. It was why she had been crying as she looked at her reflection. I knew no one would think she was ugly upon seeing her, though. If anything, people from other packs would fear her. The fact she could survive what she had.
I saw her bites as a sign that she, indeed, was the strongest among us. I continued to wash her gently. I didn't want to irritate her wounds. I knew they would heal, but it was still best not to scrub them but lightly wash them with a washcloth. Kaya had no objections as I gently massaged her scalp. I could see it in her shoulders. She was finally relaxing some.
I knew she was overwhelmed by everything that had happened. When we walked past Robert's room, she had broken down completely. I tried everything in my power to comfort her. Even making a small joke about her ear to get her out of her head. Upon finishing the bath, I watched as she got on leggings, and I offered for her to wear one of my shirts. The doctors said that I would be the most comforting thing to her as I was her mate.
The smell of me on my shirt would help keep her calm. She agreed without hesitation, and I handed her a long-sleeved t-shirt. It was massive on her petite body. She rolled up her sleeves to have her hands free. Kaya then nursed Sol, and we decided to head down for dinner. I could see it in her posture as we approached the dining room. She was starting to freak out a little. "Take deep breaths." I mind-linked her. I watched as she did. She took several deep breaths until she felt capable of walking through the door.
Upon entering, everyone was already there. Kaya's mother ran to her, wrapping her in a hug. Kaya, though, stood there for a second before she returned the hug. I watched as her mother signed. "Kaya, I am so glad you are alright." Kaya just shrugged. I knew she felt nowhere close to alright. Next was Kaya's father, who must have said something over mind link. Quill followed his parents and smiled at her, and the next thing I knew, she chuckled softly. I don't know what he said over the mind link, but whatever it had been, I was thankful that it made her laugh.
Charlie and Kimi offered a smile, as did Mark and Helen. We took our seats next to my beta at our table. Sol resting in my arms. Dinner was brought out by a man named John. He was a great cook. I knew I needed someone for the job now that we had lost Becky, and even though I didn't really want to replace her or put someone else in the position she held for so long, I had to. I myself knew nothing about cooking, and even if I had, I wouldn't be cooking.
Most of the time, unmated deltas ate in the packhouse, and they required a lot of food, and I wouldn't want to cook for so many every day. Upon Kaya seeing him, I could see her face contort. Her breathing got erratic. "Breath," I told her, but she wasn't listening. Her eyes turned dark as she looked at John. Fuck I thought I could see her body twisting uncomfortably. This was not sadness. This was anger, and she needed to get out of here now, or she would shift at the table.
"Take Sol, Mark." I quickly handed Sol to him and grabbed Kaya's arm, pulling her out of the dining hall. I had barely made it into the hallway when she growled and shifted to her white wolf. She sniffed the air. Fuck, fuck, fuck she was going to go after John. I didn't know what to do. "Kaya, let's go for a run." I said over the link. She continued to move back to the dining hall. Her teeth bared. "Run with me." Kaya turned her wolf head at me.
I shifted in front of her, not bothering to strip. We could burn off that anger if I could just get her out of the packhouse and running. Now that she had shifted, she would not return to her human form until she was calm or sedated. "Come on, Kaya." I mind-linked. I turned and hoped she would follow me. I heard her paws hitting the ground behind me. Thank the goddess she had followed me. I ran as fast as I could into the woods. I just needed to keep her moving. I ran and ran. We ran for over two hours. Neither of us mind linking each other.
I made a giant loop, and as we got closer to the packhouse, my wolf turned to hers, and I mind-linked her. "How are you feeling now? Any better?" She nodded. I shifted, and she followed. I began to sign. "We better get inside and get dressed. "Thank you, Cade; I think that helped more than you know." I gave her a smile. I hoped it would work, and I was so thankful it did. Kaya and I ran into the packhouse straight up to our den. We rushed to get dressed. I couldn't just expect Mark and Helen to watch Sol for too long. Not to mention that Kaya needed to feed her.
She had been doing it a lot, trying to get her milk back up to what it was before the war. Kaya sat down on the bed. Neither of us ended up eating dinner, and I was personally starving. "How about I have food sent up. John can leave it in front of our door, and I will go get Sol?" I signed. "That would be nice." I heard her stomach growl. She had not had solid food while in the hospital as she kept having to be sedated, and I knew she really needed to get some solid food in her.
